“pardon me, i saw a bird hit the window and i wanted to see if it was alright. do you mind if i step into the garden?”
Harry turned his gaze in the direction of the garden, then back to the young lady who seemed distraught over the poor bird. He could hardly help the small smile that tugged at the corners of his lips. “Of course,” he stepped aside to allow her entrance, “Be mindful of the flowerbed, the gardener worked for hours yesterday.”

OPEN TO VALENCE HOUSEHOLD
“no one knows these halls better than me. i’ve scrubbed and swept them enough to memorize every detail.”
“I am sure of it, Alice,” Harry offered a polite smile, “but I am still getting used to this new home. I can’t help but feel that it is almost too grandeur for our own good. I don’t know why father hasn’t downsized, seeing as so many of us have left home now,” he shakes his head. “Though I digress — I was wondering if you had seen a small black journal? I seem to have misplaced it.”
vivian.
OPEN
on cool misty morning’s like this one she could be found sitting out by the pond. the dew crept at the hem of her dress. she’d forgotten her gloves so her fingers numb. listening to the trees rustle in the breeze she looked out over the glistening water which reflected the gray sky. vivian would never dare admit her melancholy to her family, so in the moments of silence outside of the house she could let the facade of her smile fall.
The air was brisk enough to pinch his cheeks a rosy red as he ambled down the path from his family’s new home to the pond he’d recently discovered. As a child, he’d always dreamed of moving away from the countryside, escaping to the big city — to New York. But lately, that dream which had come a reality, was rather unpleasant, and Harry couldn’t help but dread the thought of returning to the city. With every mention of it he seemed to escape the conversation just as he had this morning with the cook, slipping quietly out the front door and deciding it best to go for a walk before breakfast.
As he neared the pond he noticed a figure, sat still and pensive by the edge of the water. He recognized her to be one of the daughters from the home just across the way — though he’d not yet had the pleasure of meeting her. “Pardon me...Ms. Irwin?” he said softly, attempting not to startle her by his sudden presence, “I could not help but notice you here alone.” his gaze fell to her bare hands, which must have been icy-cold without gloves, “My, you must be freezing, Ms. Irwin.”

Seated on a stone bench in the garden, Louise was doing a poor job of keeping her eyes focused on the book on her lap. This hour was set aside for her to turn her mind to furthering her learning with the expectation of becoming educated enough to be a competent conversationalist at society gatherings but it was getting nowhere today. Instead, she kept looking to the rose bushes and thinking what a good subject they would make for her sketching when they were in full bloom. Louise didn’t register that she had been joined by another person until she heard them speak.
“I’m sorry. What were you saying?”
“I said that the book tends to be far more interesting when they are actually read, and not just held while you daydream in the garden.” he replied pointedly, looking down at his youngest sister. His tone may have been teasing, but there was hardly a trace of a smile on his face. Taking a seat beside her, he peered at the open pages i n her lap out of curiosity. “And what does Mr. Duquess have you reading now?”
