HENDRIX
Drix was almost certain that it probably looked like he'd booked out of the Benson property like a dog with its tail between his legs. And as accurate as that may be, there was no way he was going to let _that_ be the image of him that Keagan was left with. No, no, he needed to prove to the woman that he was more than capable of holding his own and he could be a great provider for her....oh, and her kid. Right, the kid. That seemed to be the key to Keagan's heart. He need to keep that in mind.
He also needed a place to crash for the night, because there was no way he would be able to reassess and recoup if he slept in his car and he didn't really think to bring along the funds for a room at the Radcliffe. And he was most certainly not leaving this town without Keagan accepting they had a connection, that she was just too afraid to accept because going through a divorce made women dubious of love. But he was it.
Hendrix found himself at his sister's front door, duffle bag over his shoulder as he gave a few knocks and waited for her to answer. "Surprise! I need your couch."
HARTLEY
When Hartley heard the door knock, she had no idea who to expect because Blake would have a key to her place - and anyone else might have texted her beforehand. So of all people she *thought* would have shown up, her own brother was not one of them.
"...Hendrix? Wha.. What are you doing here? What are you doing... in *Fallcrest*?" Hartley could barely believe that her brother would actually be in town, much less needing a place to crash. "You don't even like this town, why are you here?"
It was obvious that the younger Goodwin was not comfortable at all to be in his presence and she didn't even know if she wanted Blake to know. The two of them never got along and surely her sister was not going to be pleased to know that Hendrix was in town.. and crashing over at Hartley's place.
HENDRIX
"You are not wrong in your assessment that I can't stand this place," he said with chuckle as he pushed past her and made himself at home by tossing his bag at the foot of the couch he was already claiming and then took a seat himself. "It's actually a bit of long story, _but_ suffice it to say that by granting me shelter, you're allowing me the time I need. Everything is for the sake of _love_, Hart. You wouldn't deny me that would you?"
HARTLEY
"What are you even talking about?" She closed the door behind her before following her brother to the living room. "Why are you even staying at my place?" For all she knew, Hendrix never considered her as his sister so to even consider being under the same room was bizarre to her. "If you needed a place to stay, there's the Radcliffe, you know. Much more your style, I'm sure."
HENDRIX
"Yeah, about that. Again, you're not wrong, but I didn't really think this would take more than her just taking a look at me and we'd be on our way back to D.C. right now, so I didn't factor in the finances for a stay at the Radcliffe....and that Inn at the other end of town gives me the creeps," he said by way of explaining at least one question.
He proceeded to lean back and prop his feat on her coffee table, before patting the seat beside him. "Come, take a load off lil sis. Allow me to regale you with the greatest love story you've ever heard."
HARTLEY
"What?" She had no idea who he was even talking about. She wasn't aware that there was anyone he would even like enough to come back to this town for. Hartley frowned at the sight of his feet being on her coffee table but Hartley didn't comment on it but instead stayed where she was, "... Are you here because of a girl?" That alone was shocking. But then her mind started to come up with questions because this was someone who is currently in Fallcrest - which meant that there was a very high chance that she would know this person. The town wasn't very big after all. "... Do I know this person?"
HENDRIX
âNo, no. Not a girl,â he said almost as if chastising her for the thought. âA _woman_. Someone who can really go toe-to-toe with me and keep up. She and I have been on the assignment for the past few years and one thing led to another, which led to another, and another, and I just honestly think if werenât on field duty weâd probably be married by now. Have a few kids for you teach,â he teased with an over enthusiastic laugh.
At the question of if Hartley knew her had him getting a dreamy look on his face as he thought about it. âYou know how they say, if you love something set it free. If it returns, it was meant to be? Well, this isnât _quite_ like that because Iâll admit I never really cared for when we were kids here, but I think the fact we wound up finding each other again at work? Itâs a sign from the universe that _we are meant to be_. Keagan Benson, is meant to be Keagan _Goodwin_,â he declared, before absently adding, âOh and her kid too, O guess. Iâm still new to the step-dad game. Bound to be a learning curve.â
HARTLEY
At this point, she had no idea what made her more uncomfortable. That someone would have anything to do with Hendrix.. or that her brother didn't seem to mind the topic of marriage.. and children. God, she wouldn't have minded to have nieces or nephews but she really couldn't envision Hendrix to be a father.
Her eyes widened when he *finally* revealed just who he was talking about. "No." She shook her head as she walked up to him, "You cannot be serious." There was *no way* Keagan would like him. And for him to say that he'd be Skylar's step-dad? There is no way that was happening. At the very least, Hartley knew that there wasn't a decision in that family that didn't involve Skylar. If anything, she was positive that the kid had the final say in many things especially when it was something as impactful as this. It was clear as day that Luke *and* Keagan despite her job, had their lives revolving around Skylar.
The fact that he wasn't even thinking about Skylar first told her as much. "You're lying. There is no way Keagan would marry you." She scoffed. "If you're here just to cause trouble, I'd rather you leave please."
HENDRIX
âOkay, first off: I am _very_ serious. I donât think Iâve been more serious about anything else in my lifeâŚand I mean, yeah, maybe part of it is that over our years on assignment I got used to having Keagan there as my trustee backup-â -more like to fix his fuck ups, but heâd never admit as much out loud- â-but isnât realizing you need a person yet another sign of true love?â Was he maybe overdoing it with the love angle? Maybe, but this was Hartley. Emotions were thing.
âWhoa there, Hart. I have _embellished_ many things in my life, but I assure you, Iâm telling the truth on this one. Keagan Benson wants me carnally, and even though sheâs a little hesitant to admit it at the moment, I _know_ she also wants me romantically,â he assured.
Drix just chuckled at her attempt to essentially kick him out. He grinned over at her and simply said, âAw come on, Hart. Itâs not like you to turn your own brother away. Just because youâre _lifeless_ now, doesnât mean you have to be heartless too. What would mom and dad say?â
HARTLEY
She had no idea that Keagan and her brother were on the same team together. What were the chances of that? However, she had no doubt that Keagan was willing to push through a task even if it meant working with someone she disliked. Oh, the amount of school projects she had heard her rant about. Hartley was positive that extended to work as well. However she could not - absolutely could not - imagine Hendrix and Keagan being together. And to hear the word 'love' come out of his mouth, the younger Goodwin had to shudder but she couldn't refute what he was saying *about* love.
"I don't believe you." She said with a definite tone. It was hard to tell just who the middle Calvetti sibling was ever interested in, but Hartley did not want to believe that of all people to choose, it'd be her brother. How was this a conversation right now? Keagan really went from Richard Benson to Hendrix Goodwin? The vampire's mind was blown even if it was just a rumour. Neither choice was better than the other??
Her eyes widened when her brother called her lifeless. "... What are you talking about?" She feigned ignorance. How would he even know? It wasn't as if he kept tabs on her... at least she didn't think he did.
HENDRIX
He raised his hands in surrender and simply said, "Believe what you want, but don't expect me _not_ to say I told you so when you're getting fitted for a bridesmaids dress." Was he really looking forward to a wedding, a life-long commitment, and a white-picket fence while he played 'daddy' to another man's kid? Of course the fuck not. Who would? Especially that last one.
But if that's what it took to keep Keagan with him and at the ready to help clean up his mess, it was a sacrifice he was willing to make. It certainly didn't hurt that she was a great lay, but Hendrix wasn't near delusional enough to not realize the biggest asset the woman provided was her _work_. He really did need her as his partner or else... he didn't want to think about the or else.
His attention went back to his sister. "Don't play coy with me, you've never been able to lie to save your life. Besides, the fact I was born and raised in Fallcrest made me an asset to Homeland Security when it came to the special team dedicated to supes, even if I am human. How else do you think I wound up working with Keagan, who is the boss of _Blakey_?"
HARTLEY
"There's no way..." She muttered. Due to her previous marriage to Richard, Hartley couldn't even say with confidence that Keagan wouldn't marry Hendrix because frankly, she had no idea what spontaneous news her friend would bring her after finding out they even hooked up in the first place. From the smugness her brother was showing, he sure wasn't lying about this bit.
It really concerned her just how confident he was about Keagan. (and only Keagan. It was obvious that he didn't care about Skylar since he still hadn't spoke about the teenager at all aside from the after note.
She tensed up when her brother reasoned as to why he knew what happened with her. "You can't tell mom and dad." She looked almost distraught when she knew there was a very high possibility that Hendrix would rat her out. "Drix, you seriously can't."
HENDRIX
"If Richard benson, of all people, the runt kicker who was benched for all but one game was able to get her to say yes, what makes you so sure I can't?" he asked, his façade of a slightly changed man slipping at the edges and allowing his narcissism to start seeping through. "I was quarterback, started more than half my games, I went on to work as a government agent, and on top of that I am clearly the better genetically blessed man."
Remembering himself, he relaxed back into his seat and simply said, "I _can_, but I won't. Whatever their reaction, I want zero part in it. That responsibility falls squarely on _your_ shoulders -though I suppose that won't be a problem to carry the guilt of lying to them now that you have super strength. Either way, you can deal with _that_ mess on your own. I have my own priorities right now anyway....Can I have a blanket?"
HARTLEY
"Don't tell me you're actually *jealous* of Richard? That your ego is somehow wounded because Keagan turned *you* down despite having married to him previously. Drix, you are *not* any better than him." She crossed her arms as she felt increasingly more frustrated with him on her friend's behalf. "I know you like to think you're better than everyone here in Fallcrest but you really aren't. You really need to leave Keagan and Sky alone."
Her stare steeled as he reminded her that the conversation with her parents was eventually going to happen. He was right when he said that she was a terrible liar. There was no way she could hold this up for long. But instead of replying to that, Hartley went to grab a pillow and blanket from her closet and threw it at him.
HENDRIX
Drix let out a bark of laughter. "Jealous? Me? Of Derpy Dicky Benson?! Not a chance. If anything I'm offended that you would count me out of the running when clearly the bar is so low, it's practically Satan's curtain rod," he remarked. "I don't just think it, I _know_ it. And I've put in the work to prove it as well." Hendrix stopped and looked at her in confusion. "Who now? Wait is that Kegan's sister? Because I saw her at the cabin earlier, though I don't think she recognized me..."
He let out a 'hmph' as the pillow smacked his face. "Wow, the service here is terrible."
HARTLEY
"You're just deluding yourself if you think Keagan would choose you." Her brother had always been like this and it made her very upset to have him talking about her friend this way. "You don't even-?" Hartley stopped herself because there was no point in feeding him information when he clearly didn't care at all about anything except getting Keagan for whatever the reason. *Love* was definitely not it but Hartley didn't know what angle he was trying to play. Just what did Hendrix want that he was willing to marry for it? Definitely *not* Skylar.
Not wanting to be in the same room as him any longer, Hartley retreated to her own bedroom and closed the door. Just how were they related, she will never know.
HENDRIX
"You can call it 'delusion' all you want, but I can tell you for a fact that she's already chosen at least a _part_ of me, quite a few times over. No offense to this place, but like maybe a little offense, but I don't see how any man in this town could even come close. The Rendalls are like her brothers, so I'm basically a shoo-in," he reasoned.
Hendrix made zero attempt to try and follow after his sister, and instead opted to scroll through his phone while he wound down. It was nearing midnight when his daily dose of insta was interrupted by a message from...CABOT....shit. It basically told him to be ready to be picked up by Blake first thing in the morning, and that was all it took for him to grab his stuff and make a hasty exit. He'd sleep in his rented car before he let Blake -of all people- extricate him from Hartley's house.
