Inside the Witch’s Library:
Mundane Magic by Molly Dolan
A few weeks ago I found myself at a loss. I am an ADHD witch who lives in a small space with my partner, who has diagnosed OCD. I’m sure you can imagine the challenges that brings 😅
So I came here for a little advice. My magical practice has continuously enriched & enhanced my life in all ways, so I figured someone on this site with hearth magic expertise might have some advice for me. Thus, Mundane Magic entered my life (I’d like to thank @our-marvel-universe again for this book rec).
This book has a great introduction explaining ADHD thought patterns and why certain tasks might be more difficult for folks with brains wired like mine. Off the jump, Donlan suggests adding novelty to mundane tasks to “trick” the brain into having more fun, and using the Moon & Earth cycles to keep track of deep-cleaning chores.
The rest of the book is broken up into sections based on different areas of a typical Western home. There are spell ideas, but what I love the most were the ways of adding magic/whimsy/novelty to home-keeping tasks. While nothing I read was revolutionary, just the information being organized in this way has had me reaching for this book almost daily since initially reading though it.
Yes, there are spell ideas, but what really resonated with me was the information on how certain areas of the home could influence my magical life. The bed, for example, I hadn’t realized could make me feel stuck or groggy in the mornings if it wasn’t being regularly energetically cleansed. A simple solution for me was a magical cleansing pillow spray I made and have been using daily, in between weekly washes.
This book has really helped me decontextualize cleaning and has helped the magic in my home flow with less restrictions. And I can feel the spiritual benefits! My hearth spirits have been much more lively, and I’ve felt their involvement in my daily chores too, helping me out.
I’m really grateful I found a resource like this, from a mundane perspective and a magical. I highly recommend this book for other ADHD witches or anyone who’s learning to keep a home for the first time.
I’ve spent the past four days without power after a winter storm, and have been very thankful for the flame on my gas stove helping me make nourishing meals, my fireplace for keeping me warm, and the candle on Hestia’s altar providing light. The simple acts of home-tending and even relaxing in the evening have become something I do by lantern-light and with intention, and that’s helped me feel close to Hestia 🧡
"your god isnt real" gets honestly so funny when we start talking about polytheist animistic religion, like. i can bask in the sun, i can gaze at the moon and the stars, i can drink and party, i can make love, i can feel the rain on my flesh and the wind in my hair and the earth between my toes,
sure i might believe things about those things that you dont, but those things ARE real and they ARE what im worshipping at the root of it, you can feel what im feeling just like. go touch grass,
"it doesnt feel magical or mystical, it just feels like im standing on dirt" yep. thats the divinity in it, it IS just the earth and the sun and the sky and the bonds and joy between people, those things literally give you life. they keep you going and pushing forward, keep you happy and healthy, they also bring you hardships and horrors, we are at the mercy of nature, all im doing by practicing my religion is appreciating the world i live in,
Ra travels through the sky at day, keeping us safe by lighting our world and fighting Apep, he gets swallowed by Nut every night, where she keeps him safe and veils the sky, staring down in yearning at her brother Geb, only to give birth to Ra again the next day,
so im thankful, im thankful theres a sun in the sky to light up our world, im glad theres a sky to hold the sun and im glad theres an earth to look up at the sky,
Kemetic framework doesnt work for everyone, everyone sees nature differently, different cultures developed different associations, but nature is definitely real, and its okay to have a deeply spiritual bond with it, or a gifting cycle, or a magical practice,
so if youre fixating on the "but its not a literal allpowerful dude in the sky with omnipresence whos literally doing all of these things and communicating with u and giving u miracles", then all i can say is get your head out of the bible, youve got the wrong idea entirely about how varied religion and spirituality can be, which to be clear is okay, so long as youre aware your perception of religion as a whole might need some work if ur gonna speak on it as a whole,

Some of the most expensive foods in the world are mushrooms; truffles in particular can command thousands of dollars per pound, and mushroom hunters zealously guard known morel spots. This card may appear in matters of material indulgence; treat yourself, but also, be aware of the potential consequences.
Certain types of mushrooms are well-known for their psychoactive effects. When The Devil appears, it may refer to experiences with mind-altering practices or substances. Whether the trip these take you on is awe-inspiring or filled with danger is up to you and your environment. Take care!
A common wild mushroom hunter saying goes, “Every mushroom is edible once,” a darkly humorous reference to the fact that some mushrooms can, in fact, kill you—you shouldn’t eat them! This card can reference things which are forbidden, sometimes with good reason.
Access to wealth, hedonism, psychedelics, death, as well as, you know, phallic imagery—are tightly controlled by people or systems with power. Some of these things may, with repeated exposure, exert control over the user, too. When this card comes up, you may want to ask yourself who or what is in control of this situation. Is it you? Or is it out of your hands?

The Fox Fairy/Spirit has a lot of variations throughout East Asia. I chose to base mine off the Huli Jing, and Tang dynasty dress. The shapeshifting, predominately female nine tailed fox also takes the form of a Kistune in Japan and Kumiho in Korea.
One of my favourite interpretations of this being is Good Hunting, the short story by Ken Liu (though not the Love, Death, and Robots inspired short animation! :( )
