“I’m sure you’ll meet her soon enough.” He mused. The Lady Jane’s presence was becoming more and more noticed around the castle grounds, and he was surprised Dot hadn’t met her yet. “Reina has not taken the news of me marrying again very well. It was a low blow to her and I can’t exactly blame her for handling it the way she is..”
“I understand that.” Dorothy sighed in reply. She really did understand, but she also understood why he couldn’t marry to woman he loved. “But she is... Well, I hope? I wouldn’t wish to see her any more hurt, just like yourself.”
“Tea would be nice, thank you.” Phoebe replied with a faint smile on her face. “Why can’t you sleep, sister?” She tried asking again.
“I cannot seem to usher sleep to visit me tonight, so I linger here, hoping that the cackling of the fire and the warmth will lull me to sleep.” Hesitating for a moment, while she brew tea, Dot glanced at her little sister. “Would you like to talk about your dreams?”
“I am not exactly troubled, but I can’t sleep. Insomnia more than anything else.” She shrugged. “She does? Well, maybe I can help her. I am good in deciphering dreams.”
“I will make sure to mention it to her, lady Vadas.” Dorothy replied with a swift and small nod. Perhaps her sister could open up to Estella a bit more freely.
“It is quite relaxing, I must say. I have been trying to cook for a while now, but I believe it is safer to keep to my books.” She chuckled softly, recalling the last fiasco with a broth. “I seem to be completely without a talent as a cook, which is why I admire your skills so much.”
“The only thing you need is a little practice and a feeling for dosing salt and spices. It is no science.” Dot shrugged. “But, I thank you for the compliment, lady Minett.”
“I’m glad you’re doing well, though.” Arthur hummed, offering her a smile. His mouth pressed into a firm line at the mention of the Lady Jane and a sigh escaped his mouth. “My thoughts?” He echoed. “She’s not the woman I wish to marry, but she is obedient. She listens and quite amiable.Have you met her?”
Dorothy nodded as he spoke, mentally noting to herself to meet the woman sooner rather than later. “No,I can’t say I have, sadly. How is Reina doing? I am sure this is not easy on both of you.”
Aurora smiled and nodded, picking up the food and wine and bowing slightly for the woman. “Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.”
“You needn’t mention it.” Dot gently replied.
“Alright, Dot, if you say so.” Phoebe replied, choosing not to argue about dreams with her sister. She wouldn’t understand anyway. “Would you mind if I joined you? I don’t feel like returningt o bed yet.”
Dot eyed her sister with care before she chose to nod. “Yes, alright, alright. You may join me, if you feel sleeping would be futile. Do you want me to make you tea or cocoa?”
“Yes, indeed, that is me.” Briar smiled kindly to the woman and courtly bowed her head to her. “It is a pleasure to meet you, miss Oakes. I believe you are to be thanked for such a lovely food we eat?” She smiled a little wider.
“It is nothing, really. Cooking is my pleasure.” Dorothy simply replied, brushing the compliment off with a slight shake of her head.
Estella nodded, the second the woman offered her a seat, and red wine. “Yes, thank you. That would be great.”
“You have trouble sleeping as well?” She asked as she poured a glass of wine to them both. “My sister has been plagued by ill dreams as of late.”
Aurora glanced at the food, masking her surprised as the woman asked if she would like anything to eat. She shook her head quickly, offering a thankful smile as she took the tray. “That is alright, thank you. I am not very hungry at the moment.”
Dorothy could do nothing else but to nod. “Alright, but if you find yourself hungry, do not hesitate to come down here. I will gladly give you something.”
“I know you wouldn’t.” Arthur grinned leaning backwards in the chair slightly. He sighed. “An impending marriage, chaos in the city? I suppose with all that happening I’m doing alright. And what about you, Dot?” He asked, tilting his head to the side. “How are you?”
“I am all the same, all the time.” Dot dismissed it with a wave of her hand as she turned to Arthur, with a gentle expression on her face. “Tell me about the girl, that lady Jane. What are your thoughts on her?”
Aurora continued to stand near the door, not wishing to be in the way of the cooks and all that were busy working. She only hoped that the woman had something her lord would like, she would prefer him in a good mood. She relaxed as she mentioned that the kitchen still was serving it. “I am happy to hear it.” She paused before nodding. “Some wine as well if you have some, I am sure he will be thirsty.”
Dorothy nodded and took the bottle of the Valencia’s native red, a sort which she knew to be lord Stanley’s favorite. She placed it on the tray and turned to the girl. “Can I get you something? You need to eat as well.”
[ Greek Week ]
“Everyone does, just no one desires to admit it.”
“But, you did and that is what counts.” Eris replied with a smile. “I should get going. If I stay here any longer Hera would have me impaled.”
CLOSED.
“Then it is no surprise the wine is this good.” Briar complimented the sort, taking another sip. Smiling to the woman, she bowed her head to her. “Yes, I believe we have encountered briefly. I am Briar Minett,”
Dorothy hummed in recognition. “Indeed, I assumed correctly, you are lord Romello’s fiance, are you not? The scribe for the king? I am Dorothy Oakes, the cook.”
“Not exactly, no. I wouldn’t call them nightmares, but they still disturb me. I can’t really explain it, Dot. It’s strange.” Phoebe sat on a chair opposing her sister, exhaling in slight irritation. “Do you have them as well?”
“Everybody has strange dreams every once in a while. It is nothing to be alarmed about. It will pass soon.”
“Absolutely. And that’s something I will drink to!”
“Then we shall drink together.”
