Part 4
Series Masterlist
It had been four months since university started and about three months since you'd become friends with Peter.
He still disappeared randomly, was always half-asleep in class, and somehow still managed to make terribly loud noises in the middle of the night. The only difference now was that they came with a very loud "Sorry!" afterward.
He was still the most awkward and coolest person you knew.
Everything was going well, you had made friends, you were finally understanding classes and Peter had put you on a ‘systematic spending’ so you didn’t over spend on things that didn’t matter. Everything was good really, except… this overwhelming crush you had seemed to develop on your neighbour.
You couldn’t put a finger on when exactly it started, but somewhere between the study sessions, coffee runs, and sitting together in comfortable silence, his presence had etched itself into your mind.
You smiled to yourself at the thought.
He was an absolute cutie.
“So now you've started daydreaming about him too?” Jenny's voice pulled you from your thoughts.
“Oh my God, no!” you yelped as she dropped down beside you on the stairs.
“Girl, I swear to God, does he even exist?”
You gave her the look.
“I mean, you keep saying he's a genius, he's cute, he helps you study, and he's your neighbor?” she said, counting each point off on her fingers.
You nodded.
“If he's perfect, that doesn't mean he doesn't exist.”
“Besides,” you shrugged, “maybe they still manufacture good men.”
“Right.”
She pulled out her phone and shoved it in your face.
“There’s a freshman party three blocks from your place.”
“Jenny—”
“You have to be there at nine sharp tonight.”
Before you could protest, she slapped a hand over your mouth.
“Don’t give me the 'I don't know if I can' bullshit. I want my bestie there with me.”
You sigh. There was no getting out of this one, but going out once in a while wasn’t so bad either.
“Alright, you win. I’ll be there.”
Instantly her sour expression blooms into a genuine smile. “Wear the best dress you have and do your makeup real nice!” you laugh along with her. “Okay, send me the address. I’ll be there.” you smile parting ways with her to go home.
The walk back home is uneventful.Music flooded your mind through your earphones. It was getting colder, the snow making a thin carpet on the sidewalks. The closer you get to your apartment, the quieter the neighborhood becomes. You take fast steps trying to get home sooner and rest for a while before you have to go out again.
The elevator dinged, letting you off at your floor. As you walk to your door, you pass by Peter's apartment. Maybe you can get him to go with you? Just, maybe? You ring the bell and wait for a while.
No response. You try again.
He’s probably not home. You sighed. What were you even thinking? He was definitely not the kind of person who would willingly go to a party.
You unlocked your door and slipped out of your sneakers, tossed your bag onto the couch, and headed straight for your bedroom to decide on tonight's look. You pulled out a black dress that fell just above your knees.
Maybe you shouldn't wear this in weather like this. But the other options didn't look nearly as good. Pairing it with stockings should be fine.
Yeah. You could make that work.
You laid the outfit on your bed, picked out a pair of earrings, and set everything neatly on your dressing table.
5;47 PM
You plopped onto your bed.
The exhaustion from the day was already beginning to settle into your bones. With a yawn, you grabbed your phone and set an alarm for 7 PM, fully convinced it would drag you back into the land of the living.
You should have known, the alarm never stood a chance against your sleep.
The next time you opened your eyes, the room was dark. For one second you're figuring out where you are and then the ringtone of your phone blasts in your ears.
9:27 PM.
Twenty-three missed calls.
Fifteen messages from Jenny.
You shot upright so fast you nearly fell off the bed.
"Oh my God!” You scrambled to send her a text that you are getting ready as you rush into the bathroom to make yourself presentable.
The next 15 minutes pass in a blur, from putting on the stocking without tearing them to almost stabbing your face with the earrings. You quickly put on a simple everyday makeup before Jenny’s spirit starts haunting you.
You were hopping around the apartment trying to force your foot into a heel when—
Bang.
You stop trying to force your heel into place. That was easily the loudest crash to come from your neighbor's apartment since you moved in.
“Peter?” you say instinctively.
A little concern settles in your chest when no apology follows. Usually there was always a sheepish "Sorry!" after the noise. Maybe you should check on him.
Your phone rings, flashing Jenny’s contact.
“GURL, IF YOU'RE GHOSTING ME, I'M EATING ALL YOUR SANDWICHES FROM NOW ON!”
You wince and pull the phone away from your ear. “Jenny, I'm sorry! I'm leaving right now! I'll be there in ten!” She yells something back, but the music blaring behind her completely drowns it out.
You shove your phone into your purse and try, once again, to force your foot into the heel. A knock at the door startles you. Frowning, you abandon the shoe and hurry over.
Through the peephole, you catch a glimpse of messy brown curls.
Peter.
Your hand is already on the handle before your brain catches up. The door swings open. He's standing there, his hair is a mess, a bruise darkens the side of his face.
Before you can ask what happened, he's moving.
The next second, he crashed into you, arms wrapping around your waist with enough force to knock the air from your lungs.
“Peter?” you asked, instinctively wrapping your arms around him.
This was strange. He had never hugged you before. In fact, he usually avoided any kind of physical contact whenever possible. You let him lean into you, quietly savoring the rare moment when his guard seemed to be completely down.
The silence made your smile falter.
Usually he'd be apologizing by now. Tripping over his own words. Explaining why he was at your door. Saying literally anything. Instead, he just held on. His grip trembled. A small crease formed between your brows.
"Peter? Are you okay?"
Still nothing. Then it hit you, a sharp metallic scent. At first you couldn't place it. It was mixed with the cold air from the hallway and the faint smell of laundry detergent from his hoodie.
But it was there.
Strong and so so wrong.
Slowly, you shifted one hand higher up his back, your palm meeting with the dampness of his hoodie. For a second your brain refused to process it. Maybe he'd gotten caught in the snow.
Maybe—
But it was warm, so very warm.
Your breath caught in your throat. Slowly, you pulled your hand away. The dim lights of your apartment caught the dark red smeared across your palm.
Blood.
The world seemed to stop.
A lot of blood.
"Peter." The name left your lips as little more than a frightened whisper.
“It’s okay, I’m okay. Just need a minute.” He mumbled into the crook of your neck. You take a few steps back, trying to guide him to the couch, his knees buckled.
A strangled gasp escaped your throat as his full weight suddenly dropped against you.
"Peter!"
You barely managed to keep the two of you upright. His arm slipped from around your shoulders.
"Hey, hey, hey, stay with me."
"I'm fine," he mumbled, flashing a tired smile.
“You are literally bleeding on my floor.” The panic and adrenaline flooding your system made your stomach twist. For a horrifying second, you thought you might actually throw up.
No.
Need to Focus.
You took a shaky breath and wrapped an arm around his waist.
“Come on.”
Somehow, you managed to guide him to the couch.
Every step made your heart lurch.
Once he was seated, his head immediately fell back against the cushions.
“Don't move.”
You didn't even bother with his response.
Rushing into the bathroom, you practically tore the first aid kit from beneath the sink. By the time you returned, your hands were shaking. You dropped the kit onto the coffee table and began pulling out disinfectant, gauze, and bandages.
“Pete, I need you to take off the hoodie, okay?”
For a second he simply stared at you through half-lidded eyes, then he gave a small nod.
He weakly complies with you helping him take it off. Your entire body freezes as the hoodie comes off. A sharp long line cuts through his upper back, blood pouring. You try to keep it calm, try to hide the terror in your eyes but it's too much, too much that you cannot help him with this.
Trying to keep your hands from shaking, you wiped the blood and pressed on the wound- hard enough to stop the bleeding but not as much that would hurt him more. He didn't flinch, he didn't complain, nor did he make a sound. For the first time since you've known him, he was just quiet.
“Okay Peter” You take a deep breath “I’m just gonna call the ambulance, okay?”
"No!" the word comes out sharper than he intended. “Cannot… let anyone know.” His voice comes out in a whisper.
“I just need to be patched up and have a night's rest.” he looks into your eyes with that pleading look.
“This- This is just too much, something terrible will happen if we-” you're cut off by his hands pulling you back.
“Please, just let me be this once.”
You sigh, sinking back into the couch beside him. You try your best to gently dab the disinfectant on the wound. Every few seconds he lets out a small hiss at the burn. You take the gauze and wrap it around the wound. It was still bleeding but it had considerably slowed down. You lightly graze your fingertips on the bandaged area.
This isn’t right.
He shouldn't be doing this.
“Peter look” You lift his chin forcing him to finally look at you. “I’m not trying to be in your business but whatever it is that you're doing; it’s not worth it.” He just stares at you for a while before looking back down again.
“You don’t understand.” he whispers.
“If this is about the money then I know you could get a better job anywhere with how smart you are.”
He laughs bitterly “Is that what you think this is about?” The anger in his voice almost scares you. Somewhere in the back of your mind you can hear your phone ringing but you chose not to mind it.
“Peter, I know I don't know much about you. Or what you do. But nothing is worth this.” You gesture to the bandages sitting on his body.
“It’s not like there is anyone waiting for me to come back safely.”
“I am!” you cover your mouth as soon as the words leave your lips.
“No no no no no..” His voice breaks into a whisper. He grabs your shoulder tightly, the grip of his fingers almost leaving a bruise. “Look at me okay, I am not somebody you should care about or even think about for that matter.”
“What do you mean Peter! First you come into my house with blood pouring from your body and then you say I shouldn't care about you?” You scoff “You can’t tell me who I should care about and who I should not. And I care about you” your voice softens. “I really do Peter, I really really care about you.”
Your hands reach up to his face and this time, he doesn't pull back.
You press your lips on his forehead, the contact finally breaking him. He just stares at you for a while trying to stop the emotions trying to take over him. His breathing quickens and a few stray tears roll down his cheeks.
“It’s okay Peter, I’m here.” and that finally breaks him. A strangled sob escapes him as he buries his face against your shoulder, clutching the fabric of your dress as though you're gonna disappear the second he lets go.
“I’m sorry…” he whimpered between sobs. “So, so sorry.”
His fingers tightened around the fabric of your dress.
“Everything’s…” He sucked in a shaky breath. “It’s all because of me.”
“Peter—”
“No.” He shook his head violently. “You don't understand.”
His voice cracked.
“Every time I try to fix something, it just gets worse. People get hurt. Things fall apart.” Another strangled sob escaped him. “And I keep telling myself it'll be different next time, but it never is.”
You felt your heart twist painfully in your chest.
“They are all gone because of me, all because I wasn’t better.”
Your fingers run through his hair trying to calm him. “It’s okay, everything is fine now, you don’t have to fight alone anymore.” He doesn't say anything, just holds you tighter as he sobs.
Somewhere between sobs and reassurance, you both fall asleep on the couch.

“So when exactly did your fascination with Spiderman start? The notebook seems pretty old.”
He walked beside you with his hands tucked into his pockets.
“Uh, when I was fifteen. I was at the Academic Decathlon and... I don't really know what happened that day. A group of people got trapped in a tower and I saw him from above trying to get everyone to safety.”
You smiled faintly at the memory.
“I'd heard about him before, but when I saw him that day, I could tell he was probably around my age. And it just felt strange. Imagine trying to manage school while doing... whatever it is he does. It seemed so unfair that someone our age had to deal with all that.” His ears turned pink and he suddenly found the sidewalk very interesting.
“You think so?” he asked casually. Far too casually. “He could be any age.” You laughed, finding his reaction oddly amusing.
“Maybe. But I'd like to think he's my age.” His head snapped toward you.
“Why?”A suspicious amount of concern was packed into that single word.
“Do you like him?” He asked carefully, trying not to sound too interested in it.
“What? No!” you nearly choked. “He just makes me feel inspired.” You shrugged.
“I mean, if he can somehow juggle being Spiderman and school, then I should at least be able to do school.” You smile.“It was so hard trying to stay focused during the university entrance exams. Honestly, I think I got through it because of him.”
Peter nearly missed a step. “Because of Spider-Man?”
“Yeah.” You shrugged like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Whenever I felt like giving up, I'd think about him. I know it sounds stupid, but if some teenager out there was balancing school while getting punched by supervillains every other week, then I could survive a few exams.” A laugh escaped you.
“It's ridiculous, I know.”
“No,” Peter said a little too quickly.
You looked up at him.
“No?”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
“I just... don't think it's ridiculous.” He looks conflicted. “I mean whatever gets you through it, right?” You smile.
“But that doesn't mean he isn’t cute.”
“Aww come on.” he groans. “Why would you like a spider freak!” you punch his arm lightly. “Hey! Shut it. He's amazing.”
“Okay, okay.” Peter raises his hands in surrender.
“I mean it. He literally spends his time helping people.”
Peter looks away.
“Yeah.”
“And he can swing across the entire city.” the excitement practically radiates off you.
“That does sound pretty cool.” he looks away.
Deli’s comes into view. “Look, we're here. I wanna get something with lots of cheese!”
He stopped in his tracks when he spotted the posters plastered across a nearby wall.
SPIDER-MAN: DELINQUENT.
MASKED MENACE.
WHEN WILL THE CITY HAVE ENOUGH?
His stomach twisted.
You skipped off into the shop, completely unaware that he wasn't following behind. Peter stared at the posters for a moment longer.
Maybe he should leave.
Maybe he should find some abandoned building somewhere and stay away from people before he hurts someone again. He shouldn't be standing here smiling over sandwiches. He shouldn't feel happy.
Especially not because of you.
Just as he turned to leave—
“Hey, Peter! What are you looking at?” He glanced up. You were standing in the doorway, waving at him. “Come on! Hurry up! It's warm inside.”
For a second, Peter just stood there.
Then he looked at the posters.
Then back at you.
Maybe this once.
Just for today.
Maybe he could let himself be around other people. Maybe he could pretend everything was okay for a little while.
He took a deep breath and headed towards you. As soon as he was within reach, you grabbed his sleeve and pulled him inside. “Are you perhaps an airhead with being an awkward hitman?”
“Whatt no!” The door swung shut behind him. “And will you stop it with the hitman allegations?” he whisper-shouted.Peter glanced around nervously to see if anyone had heard that. Nobody cared. Everyone was far too busy with their own lives.
“Come here.” You tossed your jacket on an empty booth. “Tell me what you want. I’ll get them for us.” He reluctantly sits down. “Uhh, I’ll have whatever is the cheapest.”
“Aww come on!” You looked genuinely offended. “Being broke in college doesn't mean that you should have the cheapest thing on the menu!”
“Umm actually, that’s how it is.” you frown.
“Okay, I’ll get you whatever I’m having.” Before he could protest, you were already halfway to the counter. Peter sighed and sank further into the booth.
This was a terrible idea.
You were absolutely the kind of person who would order a twenty dollar sandwich without even looking at the price.
A few minutes later, you returned balancing two plates and slid into the seat across from him. Peter stared at the sandwich in front of him.
"Why is this so big?"
"Double cheese. Extra chicken." You looked at him like the answer was obvious. "Of course it's gonna be big."
He looked back down at it.
"How much did this cost?"
"Don't worry about it. Consider it a payment for tutoring me."
"How much did it cost?"
"Peter."
"How much."
You sighed dramatically. "Like... twenty dollars?"
Peter nearly dropped the sandwich.
"TWENTY DOLLARS?"
A couple at the next table glanced over. "Keep your voice down!" You shush him.
"For a sandwich?!” he shook his head, “This is ridiculous! How do you even manage your expenses?”
Peter wasn’t much of a talker, except when he got flustered or heard something completely ridiculous. Between rambling about this new part of college life and figuring out calculus, the sun had already begun to set.
“Oh my god! I totally get it now.” You quickly scribble on your notebook. “How did I not think of that before?”
“See? You get it.” He smiles, leaning back into his seat. “Today might not have been an absolute waste of your time.”
“What do you mean, waste of time? I figured this out and acquired a new friend. How awesome is that?”
Peter pauses.
“Do you really mean that?”
“Huh?”
“I mean... the friends part. Do you really mean that?”
“Of cou—” His phone rings.
Peter glances at the screen. A red alert flashes across it. His entire expression changes.
“I'm so sorry. I really gotta go.”
Before you can even respond, he's already scrambling to gather his things.
“Peter, what—”
“I'll see you around!”
And then he's gone.
He rushes off at such a ridiculous speed that, for a second, you almost think he's the Flash. You stare after him, completely dumbfounded.
Okay. That was really weird.
You add that to the ever-growing list of weird things about Peter Parker. You pack your notes into your bag and pull your jacket on before heading home. You don't think much of it.

Even after all the embarrassment you suffered yesterday, somehow you still end up with him in your room trying to teach you calculus.
“Okay, take a deep breath and drink some water and we can try it again.” His voice is gentle enough trying to ease your anxiety.
It was so frustrating.
Everyone said that once you got into a good university, everything would be fine. That the entrance exams were the hard part. That it would get easier after this.
They were liars.
“Hey, can we just take a break and get back to it? I don’t think I am understanding anymore.” the words come out hushed in a whisper that makes you question if he could even hear it.
“Yeah, sure.” he replies almost instantly.
“Umm, we can hang out on the balcony if that's okay? I really need some air.” You say rising from your chair.
“Or we can go to Deli’s and get a nice sandwich.” he gives a small smile.
“Okay, we could do that. Just let me grab my jacket and purse.” You flash him a smile before disappearing into your bedroom.
If there was one thing Peter Parker couldn't contain, it was his curiosity.
In the few minutes you were gone, he'd spotted a box sitting on your shelf with TOP SECRET written across it in big, bold letters.
You couldn't exactly blame him for being curious. The thing was practically begging to be opened.
And what if it actually contained something important? Some secret villain plot?
With the way your imagination had somehow turned him into a gang member and a hitman, there had to be a reason you thought like that... right?
He glances towards your room and back to the box, he could just take a peak maybe?
He slowly reaches over to the box, careful not to make any noise or startle you.
“Okay, I just have to be very stealthy." he whispers as he opens the box containing a note book and key chains?
He flips the first page. ‘So how do the webs work?’ under it there are theories of what should be the tensile strength, weight capacity, flexibility. Then there are entities of trials? Were you really trying to make web fluid? He turns a few pages to get to ‘How does spiderman not get obliterated by the wind force?’ “
‘How does he stick to walls?’
‘Can he turn on/off sticky power?’
A few pages later.
‘Why I disagree with people blaming spiderman’
‘Does Spiderman have a girlfriend? Or a boyfriend?’
"What the fuck?" Peter muttered.
His eyes darted back to the previous page.
Then the next.
Then back again.
Was this an entire notebook dedicated to Spider-Man?
No.
No, because that would be insane.
...
He turned another page.
It was definitely an entire notebook dedicated to Spider-Man
“Let’s go Peter.” your voice startles him causing him to drop the book.
“Uhh, in my defence it said top secret!” You immediately run over and snatch the book from his hands.
“Oh my god peter why were you snooping in on my stuff?!” The embarrassment radiates off you. Why did you keep embarrassing yourself in front of this annoyingly smart neighbour?
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, really! I just thought-”
“What did you think?”
“That uhh if you thought i was in a gang maybe you were associated with something like that… yeah” he gives you a sheepish smile.
You quickly put all the stuff back into the box and put it under the table making a mental note to hide things better.
“So you like spiderman huh?” he speaks after the very awkward silence.
“You could say that, but I think I am more fascinated by him, you know.” he tilted his head looking very confused.
“What do you mean by fascinated?” you shrug.
“You know if I was saving the city for free and I would hear these ungrateful people talking shit about me, that would be my villain origin story.” you laugh a little. “I think people tend to forget at the end of the day he’s still a human, someone who gets hurt, feels pain, and is tired.”
Peter stared at you for a second longer than necessary.
"Yeah," he said quietly.
"I guess they do."
The atmosphere suddenly turned gloomy and you have no idea why.

Being neighbours with Peter Parker was… well unique if you put it in a good way but mostly weird. This man had moved into your apartment complex just a few days after you did and to be honest, he was one odd guy.
Things were constantly falling over in his apartment. Strange machines buzzed at all hours of the day. And judging by the amount of noise, he either didn't know the walls were paper-thin or simply didn't care.
He avoided people like they were supervillains waiting to jump him in the hallway. Every time you passed him, he looked like he'd just received the worst news of his life, walked into a wall, and then apologized to the wall for being in its way. Judging by his habits, you could very well think he worked for some gang. Not that there are many since Spiderman woke up one day and chose violence. That being said it was surprising when you bumped into him on your way to class one morning.
He was wearing the ESU hoodie, face almost hidden by the hood.
“I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was going!” he apologises like his life depends on it. Makes you almost laugh.
“Well with your hood in your face I don’t think you can see anything.” the joke flies off his head as he apologises once again.
“Geeszz man! It’s okay.” You lift up his hood a bit to help him see better. “Stop apologising for small stuff.” you flash him a smile. “I’m not a piece of glass that might shatter on the slightest touch. Heck I might even take spiderman on!” your words made him finally crack a smile.
“See you around!” you wave and walk to your statistics class. Remind me again who was that family friend that suggested to major in AI?
After bumping into him yet again in the hallway you mustered up the courage to ask him his name and what he actual fuck he’s doing?
Because normal people don’t make as much noise as him, neither do they look like they got their ass beat up everyday and nor do they casually show up in the toughest classes half asleep and ace every test. ALL AT THE SAME TIME.
This was the most annoying thing ever. He wouldn’t let you have a good night's sleep and somehow be at the top of these ridiculously hard classes.
Looking at his silhouette getting smaller and having no time to lose, you take a leap of faith and grab the back of his shirt, yanking him back and making him drop whatever take out he was carrying.
“WHAT THE FUCKK?!” he yelps as you both tumble on to each other.
“WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU DO ALL DAY?”
“What do you mean?” his voice is a little shaky, afraid his identity is exposed.
“I for one know you don’t sleep all night, then you look like you fought the fucking hulk every morning and you sleep in classes and somehow get straight A’s and I am strugging to even pass half of them!” the frustration making you almost pull out your hair.
He looks at you wide eyed.
“Uhhh.. I could tutor you?” he looks so unsure of what just happened.
“Look at them go in the hallway”
“Kids these days don’t have any respect for public spaces”
You snap your head to the elderly ladies passing by and then to this absolute hunk of a man pinned under you.
“OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! WHAT THE FUCK!” you scramble off him leaving him even more confused about the whole ordeal.
“I’m so sorry! I don’t know what got over me! I was just so frustrated with almost falling this semester and I-”
He chuckles, “It’s okay, I understand the stress is getting to you.” he looked relieved for reasons you didn’t understand.
“Yeah I guess.” you take a shaky breath trying to figure out what to do with the situation you put yourself in. “Umm, so were you serious about the tutoring part?”
He looks like he’s second guessing himself so you speak up first. “You don’t really have to! Thank you though!” you try to get to your feet as fast as you could to get away from this awkward scenario.
He grabs your hand before you can leave, pulling himself up. “It’s not like I mind it, I don’t know if I'd be good enough to tutor you.”
You gasp in disbelief. “Youre kidding right? If I could understand one percent of how you keep up I would definitely pass.”
He raises a brow, “I mean with whatever gang stuff you have going on.” he raises his hand trying to stop you. “Nononononononono, you got it all wrong!” he gestures to himself, “Me? Do you think I could be in a gang?” you pretend to think a bit. “Nah, you couldn’t make an intimidating face and get kicked out the first day.”
“Thanky- what?” he looks genuinely surprised as to why anyone would say that.
“I’m thinking more like a hitman.”
“What?? Why would you think that? And what kind of hitman would be awkward?”
“I don’t know dude, you're the hitman.” he grabs his curls in frustration.
“I- ughh”
“Look man, I don’t care what you do outside of this place, as long as you stop making crashing sounds all night and let me sleep or tutor me I’ll stay out of your business."
“Yeah yeah yeah, that’s fine with me.” you hand him the takeout that was still lying on the floor. “Sooo, do we like exchange numbers?” you ask, fishing out your phone from your backpack. “Yeah, totally.” he types in his number and saves it as ‘peter tutor/neighbour’
“Umm, alright then, I’ll text you.” you wave and boult to your apartment.
"Remember,I'm just a regular dude doing whatever it takes to pay rent.”
You can still hear his distant voice saying something but this is all the embarrassment and socialising you can do for today.
The door slams shut behind you. You run up to the bathroom and splash water on your face. ‘It’s okay, he’s probably gonna forget it and you never see each other again’
That was one very very awkward conversation you never want to have again. You should probably delete his number before you get high off the caffeine and actually text him, but what if he makes you pass whatever this advanced calculus was.
Let me know guys how was it and if you want a part 2 :3
