Ruby suppressed a giggle at the sight of Mint flushing further; they were so anxious! Far more than she was, and her initial inclination had been to shift and fold herself into a corner somewhere. Not only was it cute in its own right, but Mintās demeanor went a long way in easing her nerves. āDonāt sell yourself short, mate!ā She said brightly, beaming at them. āAnyone could have found me out there, and they might not have been as kind about not outing me like you were. Iām just really glad you found me first. Thanks, Mint.ā She readjusted herself, clutching one of the pillows to her chest and peeking out from behind it (and wincing again as the splitting headache reasserted itself). āSorry - Iām not used to talking about this to other people in person. Well⦠people who arenāt shifters, too. Thatās what they call people like me. Youāre probably familiar with like⦠werewolves or something, right? Sort of like that, but without the full moon thing, and more control. And Iām not a wolf, obviously. Iām a bat.ā Ruby reached up, pressing a fingertip against one of her ears. āBat ears.ā She paused, still peeking at Mint from behind the pillow while waiting to hear what they would say in response.
-Ruby wasā¦bright. Comforting, cuteā¦Mint felt their nerves begin to ease. She was kind. Although the concept of shifters was strange-
Shiftersā¦? S-soā¦you can t-turn into a bat?
-That would explain the ears. They were thin, and covered in a soft velvety fur. Now that Mint looked at them, they did look like bat ears. Somehow, it wasnāt the strangest thing Mint had encountered-
I g-guess that isā¦p-pretty hard to talk about. S-so are there a lot ofā¦of shifters? U-um, I guess justā¦the idea of t-turning into an animal isā¦p-pretty amazing.
-Mint fidgeted, their hands half-signing words as the concept really struck them-
Thenā¦c-can you fly? What is it like?
āYeah!ā Ruby peeked out from behind the pillow a little more, lowering it slightly. āI can show you, once Iām feeling a little better from almost knocking my own block off. A ghost bat to be precise. Theyāre local to where Iām from. Three guesses as to where that is,ā she added with a cheeky wink.
As her confidence seeped back in, Ruby lowered the pillow further, meeting Mintās gaze as she continued with her explanation. āThere are a good deal of us, although we do our best to keep it under wraps. Some humans know about our existence, but very few. It could be really dangerous if too many people knew. Especially for shifters that are mythical creatures instead of just animals. They run the risk of actively being hunted, so they keep to themselves and keep a very low profile.ā She sighed. āNot everyone is as nice as you are.ā
That was straying into unpleasant territory, so Ruby was glad to hear Mintās next question. āThatās how I ended up in the graveyard, actually! I was taking a break from work and decided to nip out for a quick flight, and an owl decided to make me its dinner.ā She glanced toward the window, still feeling more than just a touch of animosity towards owls in general. āFlying is⦠amazing. Itās my favorite part of being a shifter. Itās so much fun seeing the ground pass by below when youāre high enough for the air to be just a little thin, with a huge silver moon as your backdrop.ā She sighed happily, then realized how much sheād been talking and flushed lightly. āSorry, I hope I havenāt talked your ear off.ā
-Mint watched Ruby, enraptured as she spoke. A small, shy smile formed on their face-
That s-soundsā¦amazing. I um, I g-guess not the whole āalmost g-getting eatenā thing, butā¦I w-would give anything to fly. I r-really donāt mindā¦Iād love t-to hear more. B-besidesā¦my ears arenātā¦arenāt that great.
-Their hand went up to tug at a strand of hair, gesturing at their hearing aid. It wasnāt usually something they liked to bring up, butā¦it was already a much smaller secret than Rubyās. A small giggle bubbled up in Mintās throat-
Ghosts and batsā¦and a g-graveyard. Itāsā¦the whole package. Ahā¦m-maybe I shouldnāt laugh. Youāre h-here because you got hurtā¦b-but you can stay as long as you like, until y-your head feels better. Um, just let me know ifā¦if you need anything, alright?
-Honestly, they wouldnāt mind if Ruby stayed even longer. It was nice having someone to talk to. She wasnāt scary. She wouldnāt hurt them-
Ruby shrugged, smiling ruefully.Ā āIt comes with the territory, I guess. No oneās made a snack out of me yet, though. I wish I could take you with me on a flight somehow.āĀ
After they pointed its existence out, Ruby looked up at Mintās hearing aid in surprise; she hadnāt suspected that. She wondered how good of a model it was; clearly they werenāt havenāt any trouble hearing her. It was something she could ask about later.Ā
She giggled as well after they pointed out the aesthetic that she seemed to fit rather nicely into.Ā āWe do have sort of a theme going on here, huh? Actually, how far from the graveyard are we? Were you just in the area when you found me? And I appreciate the offer.ā She pressed a hand against her head, wincing lightly.Ā āThe pain medicine is starting to help some. I hate to be a freeloader, and Iāll see what I can do to help out once Iām good again, butā¦ā At that moment her stomach rumbled, speaking for her.Ā āSorry! I think I havenāt eaten since yesterday afternoon, maybe. But I can wash dishes or something to make up for it!ā
Um, weāre s-still in it, actually. I uhā¦own the p-property. I w-was walking home whenā¦when I found you.
-Mint signed fragments of words as they explained, almost unconsciously-
You r-really donāt have to worry about it. Youāre not f-freeloading. I donātā¦donāt get a lot of companyā¦Itās n-nice, having someone to talk to. And I c-couldnāt possibly ask you t-to help out when youāre hurt. You should rest more.
-At Rubyās awkward request, Mint smiled-
Iāll go make you s-some food. If you need anything, you c-can just call. Um, you might n-need to be a bitā¦loud, f-for me to hear you. Iāll be b-back in a little bit. Iāll bring s-some ice, tooā¦for your head.
-Mint turned to go, leaving the door open behind them so sound could travel. Distant sounds of working in the kitchen could soon be heard-
āOh!ā Ruby glanced over towards the window, wondering if sheād find herself looking out over the assortment of gravestones once she had the energy to stand up without keeling over. āCripes, I really did get lucky.ā
She noticed Mintās hands weaving amongst themselves as they spoke, bewildered for a brief moment before it dawned on her that it must have sign language - American, to be precise, as opposed to the Auslan she was more used to seeing. Ruby made a note of it, intending to take a look at it laterā¦
ā¦and it occurred to her in that moment that she was completely unwired, having left everything back at her apartment prior to going out for what was supposed to just be a short flight.
That fact in particular was more jarring and troubling than anything else that had happened so far.
She smiled gratefully at Mint as they departed to go make much-needed food, although the moment they were out of sight her face fell. This⦠was bad. She had a couple of ongoing assignments and things to monitor, and without as much as her phone there was no way to keep track of any of it. Maybe Mint had one? Although she was already asking way too much of them already. Worrying seemed to be making her head hurt worse, and Ruby lay back, staring at the ceiling while clutching the pillow to her chest. Going anywhere was out of the question, especially since she couldnāt hide her ears at the moment, either. For better or worse, she would have to deal with being offline for a couple of days at least. The most she could hope for was being able to alert her current clients that there would be delays.
Ruby sighed glumly, allowing her eyes to slip shut.
At least Mint was nice. It didnāt seem like the worst place to be stranded in for a bit, and definitely not the worst person to be stranded with.
-Mint returned a while later, carrying a tray of food with them. Ruby was resting, right where they left her. The sight calmed down their oversensitive nerves, that she has stayed in one place while they were gone. Gently, Mint knocked on the open door to alert their presence-
Ruby Are you sleeping?
-Cautiously, they made their way in, balancing the tray in their hands. They set it down on the side table, picking something off of it. An ice pack, wrapped up in a towel-
Um, I b-brought you some ice. S-sorry if I woke youā¦Uh, are you okay? Y-you look worried.
Ruby was dozing, lightly enough that sheād fully woken up before Mint actually addressed her. She opened one eye, stretching as she sat up in bed. āIām up!ā She exclaimed, albeit a little less energetically than before. She inhaled the aroma of food - it really had been a full day since her last meal, hadnāt it? - and beamed at Mint. āThank you! Iāll make it up to you once Iām good again, I promise.ā The ice pack was tempting, but quieting her stomach was a more pressing matter, and Ruby set it aside in favor of reaching for the tray.
After the first couple of bites - nothing gourmet but it might as well have been as far as Ruby was concerned - she addressed Mintās question, feeling rather guilty for having to ask anything else of them. āIām⦠sorry, I know you said you didnāt mind, with me asking for things, but Iām not really used to it so itās hard not to feel bad. I live alone and have ever since I left home, and I donāt really have any family over here, either, so⦠I rely on myself, for the most part. But. This is kind of important; the work I do requires me being able to stay in contact with clients, and I left everything back at my apartment before I left last night. Do you have a phone or a laptop or anything? Even if I can just use it briefly to tell them itāll be a few days before Iām available again.ā She sighed, wincing at how acute that sense of guilt was; was she really this out of practice with interacting with other people (in person, at least)?
-Mint watched her eat awkwardly, unsure of where to look. It was probably rude to stare, but Mint couldnāt help glancing up to her ears every few seconds. They looked so soft and delicate, sprouting from Rubyās silky blonde hair. They were almost grateful when Ruby addressed them again-
Umā¦I do h-have a laptop, butā¦itās pretty old. O-of course you can use my phone if y-you want. Or ifā¦if youāre okay with it, I c-could goā¦get your things f-for you. Since you p-probably canāt g-go out for a while.
-Mintās gaze flicked up to her ears once again. They shifted awkwardly. Was that too weird to offer? They were practically strangers-
Itās really okay. I d-donāt want you toā¦to have to s-stop your work because y-youāre here. Uh, if y-you just tell me the address, I c-can go get anything y-you need. Do youā¦maybe have a s-spare key hidden somewhere?
-āIf not, I can pick the lock.ā Mint kept silent about that last part. Explaining that particular skillset probably wouldnāt go over well-
Ruby faltered between bites at the reminder that, for the time being, she was completely grounded; she felt another surge of bitterness towards that stupid owl, but forced herself to keep from scowling. She didn't want to alarm Mint, who seemed to be particularly rattled at the moment (although she wasn't sure why). She also wasn't sure how to tell Mint that she didn't really carry anything with her when she went out on flights for safety reasons, nor did she risk leaving a spare key around with all of the gadgets she'd either acquired or lovingly pieced together over the past couple of years. It was just as easy to engage the lock before shutting the door and pick the damn thing with a hairpin when she got back.
She wasn't sure she wanted to tell Mint that, nor explain why she'd acquired that particular talent in the first place.
Ruby mulled over her options for a minute before speaking again, pensive expression brightening into a smile again. "No, that's okay, I can just use what you have here. It's no big deal, I'll probably just have to make a few updates, and I can just order a couple of things. You've done enough for me already, Mint," she added, gratefully. "If I had to almost crack my head open on a headstone in a cemetery, I'm glad it just happened to be yours."
