[Txt]: Hi, Grey. Um, I’m not sure if you have any free time soon,, but I finished the necklace. Can we meet up sometime? If it’s not too much trouble. 🌿
[Txt]: Oh Mint! Of course we can meet up, it’s no trouble at all! I’m really excited to see the necklace!! Are you free this afternoon at 3? :)
[Txt]: Three works for me. Um…I’m not sure if you were joking before, but…if you still wanted to walk in the graveyard, we could. The weather is nice for it.
[Txt]: Only if that’s okay with you, though! I remember you mentioned something like that…
-Grey stared at his phone, heart racing excitedly. He hadn’t expected Mint to actually take him up on his offer.-
[Txt]: That sounds lovely! I’ll see you soon!~
-Grey immediately raced to get ready. A shower, actually putting in the effort to scrunch his hair so it would form curls instead of a messy cloud, and removing the chipped black polish from his nails in favor of putting on a clean, uniform coat of it.-
-Picking out clothes was a bit harder. Was it in poor taste to wear skulls to a cemetery? More importantly, why did he suddenly care so much about this? There was a weird need to somehow impress Mint burning him up inside. Grey shook his head, clearing the anxiety from his mind as though it were an etch a sketch. He finally just grabbed a basic ensemble of leather and fishnets before leaving to meet them.-
-Grey arrived at the graveyard a half hour early. He bounced anxiously on his heels while waiting in anticipation.-
-Mint set their phone down, letting out a nervous exhale. It would be okay. There was enough time to calm their anxiety before he came. Just those short messages had already made their heart beat frantically. They checked the time. There was a funeral scheduled in the morning, but they would be gone by noon. It was definitely more convenient for Grey to come here, since Mint wouldn’t have to rush anywhere. Even if it would mean him discovering that Mint worked in a cemetery…they shook their head. He was kind, he had offered this in the first place. It would be okay-
-As time trickled slowly on, Mint checked and double-checked everything in their head. The necklace was a work they could be proud of, wrapped up as a gift. They only had a bit of time to change after the funeral, so they switched their dress shirt for a comfortable sweater and kept the slate grey skirt they had been wearing. Their dark, curly hair was pulled back into a semi-presentable bun, wrangled into place with too many hairpins. Seconds passed either too slow or too quick, and significantly before the designated time, Mint made their way across the cemetery to the meeting place. They had anticipated a wait, but to Mint’s surprise, a figure was already waiting there-
Grey! Y-you’re early…Um, s-sorry, did you w-wait long?
-They stuttered, suddenly at a loss for words in his presence. Deft fingers twisted together nervously. How long was he waiting? They were sure they would get there first-
Um…It’s good t-to see you again. H-how have you been?
-Not expecting Mint to arrive so soon, Grey jumped at the sound of their voice. He quickly recomposed himself, his surprise fortunately barely noticeably.-
Oh, Mint, how nice to see you! Don’t worry, I’ve only been here a few minutes.
-Mint’s nerves were more than a little obvious, and Grey’s mind raced, trying to figure out something he could say or do to calm them down, at least a little bit.-
I’m really excited to be here with you.
-Wow, perfect. Way to go, Grey…-
I’ve been good, how about you? I’m really psyched to see your art!
I-I’ve been good! Work k-keeps me busy, b-but…I w-was…looking forward t-to seeing you…
-Mint fidgeted, a shy, awkward smile ghosting across their face. How was it so different, talking to him compared to the people who usually came to the cemetery? His expression was so bright, standing out like a ray of sunlight against the backdrop of graves. It was almost funny how his lively face contrasted with his aesthetic choices-
I, um, I like y-your outfit…It s-suits this place.
-They paused, unsure how to continue. Was it too soon to present his gift? Would he leave as soon as he got it? He wouldn’t leave right away, right? It wasn’t as if Mint could hide that they were holding it. It would definitely be too awkward to not hand it over. Mint fumbled with the package, nearly dropping it in their clumsiness to hand it to Grey-
H-Here. I um, I w-worked really hard on it. I got k-kind of carried away…b-but I think it t-turned out as one of my b-best…
-Grey gave Mint a gentle smile as they spoke.-
-Oh that stutter is so precious. Everything they do just draws me in further. I can’t get over how cute their every little mannerism is!-
Thank you, Mint, I do my best. I like your outfit as well. The sweater looks really soft and cozy!
-Grey’s eyes moved down to look at the small package. He reflexively reached out as Mint nearly dropped it, though it turned out to be unnecessary.-
-He accepted the package, his grin growing even broader in excitement. The graveyard went silent, save for the wind and the sound of ripping paper. Grey stared at the small object in awe.-
Mint I… wow! It’s looks so so cool! All these little intricate details I just… wow!
-He looked at Mint. There were so many ways he wanted to show his appreciation, but he was terrified of upsetting them in some way. He ran his finger over the piece, allowing his nail to trace each detail.-
Thank you so much, I don’t even know what to say. I still can’t believe you made this for me.
-Perfect kind adorable oh my god I love them.-
-The wind picked up and the temperature dropped, but Grey was too focused on Mint’s creation to notice.-
-Mint twisted their fingers together nervously as they watched Grey unwrap his gift. They loved the way his face lit up at each little thing. His excitement was infectious, and Mint found themself smiling softly too. It was enough of a gift just to see him so happy. Mint felt their heart throb at that thought-
I’m g-glad you like it. Um, if y-you don’t mind...can I...?
-They reached out hesitantly, lifting the necklace from Grey’s hand. The brief moment of contact felt like a jolt on their skin, but it wasn’t a bad sensation. The delicate carving depicted four foxglove flowers blooming around a rose. The petals stood out in relief against intertwining stems. Mint moved to pull the necklace around Grey’s throat, helping him latch it in the back. They could feel the heat of his skin through the cooling air-
...It looks g-good on you. I’m glad.
-Mint tilted their head up to meet his eyes. There was only a short distance between them. Beneath Mint’s messy bangs, a constellation of freckles was visible. Their breath caught in their throat, but any words they might have said were cut off by a large drop of water plopping on their cheek. Mint looked up, feeling more droplets of rain hitting their skin-
Sh-Shit, uh, is it raining? W-We should g-get somewhere dry.
-They tugged on Grey’s sleeve, leading him through the field of graves a bit too quickly to be romantic-
