My personal crackpot theory on Crowley’s angel name
We start here, with this incredible post by @ Crowleys_Bently on Twitter
We’re going to interpret this as fact because everything in this show is intentional and it works with my theory.
In season 2 we see that Crowley made the stars right, that basically confirms him being an archangel or at the very least being a very very powerful angel, more likely archangel bc of the whole folder scene. However, we never find out what his angel name actually IS in the show. I think it’s going to be a big reveal plot point in season 3, but I want to know now because I’m impatient and have what’s colloquially known as a problem.
This is the archangel Jophiel.
Jophiel is also said to be the one who cast Adam and Eve out of Eden which could have been reinterpreted for the purposes of Crowley’s character, making him the literal serpent of Eden. That ties in well to Jophiel also having been said to be a guardian of wisdom. Crowley literally guarded the apple and distributed the knowledge there in to humanity. More specifically Jophiel is attributed to the Sephira Chokhmah which, for anyone else like me who isn’t a scholar of biblical mysticism, is; “the second of the ten sefirot (The 10 powers which by G-d was manifested), is the first power of conscious intellect within Creation, and the first point of 'real' existence” and is associated with intuitive insight.
Some other fun facts about Chokhmah that imply that it was what was in the apple;
I mean come on. It’s basically the ability to see good and evil, to actualize and contextualize your actions in the world. It’s also the beginning spark of the creative process and quite literally is a possible translation of the first words of the Bible when the universe is made. You want to know who we se literally create the stars and universe? Crowley.
Another fun fact about Chokhmah is that the real life Aleister Crowley in his book Liber 777 has it represented by the II’s of each suit in tarot. My man in cannon literally shipping himself in his book through his angel representation. What a simp.
Also important to note is that Jophiel is a companion of Metatron which is why they recognize each other and seem like they have such history. Metatron is literally the only angel Crowley remembered, the show goes out of its way to tell us that. He has no recollection of Saraqael who says they worked closely, or Furfur who says they LITERALLY FOUGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER AS ANGELS.
Not as important but worth mentioning is that Jophiel was said to have a flaming sword. You know who else has a flaming sword? Aziraphale. I think that Neil and Terry took the sword and reassigned it in cannon, unless there was possibly some fuckery where Crowley got Aziraphale to give them the sword in the first place, or his old sword was assigned to Aziraphale which is why he remembered and asked about it.
Secondarily worth noting is that Jophiel introduced language at the beginning of time and Crowley and Aziraphale have a little argument about Aziraphale deciding to learn French from humanity instead of just knowing it like the other angels. Not sure how to fit it in or if it matters, but wanted to bring it up. Also not pertinent but I wanted to mention Jophiel is attributed to the Zodiac. I did a lot of research ok.
There’s a lot of reassignment of Jophiel’s jobs in different interpretations which would also line up with Jophiel being fallen and heaven having to redistribute his duties.
