Yeah I’m sure you, as a white, able-bodied male with easily measurable intelligence, see no problems with a school that is set up best to support nerdy white kids that are originally ambitious in STEM fields. Not so sure that you can use logic in place of perspective-taking when it comes to arguing with a girl who is blind about her negative experiences there. You don’t have the tools to find the right answer for this one - you haven’t lived her experience. I know it’s hard for you to admit that you’re wrong because you’re almost always right in your world, but lord.
TAG has potential to be accepting of diversity in all forms, but its biggest fault is that it thinks it’s already there. So until there is more self-awareness/reflection and actual regarding of students who have struggled there because they aren’t white, able-bodied, geared toward STEM subjects, conventionally intelligent, looking to go to college, cisgendered, etc then it will never reach that potential.

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.
A little pick me up note to myself as I take a break from finishing this research paper on third party interventions that I made far too complicated and that I am getting VERY disgruntled with. Also I have a final in 7 hours:
-Joined Debate team as soon as I got back to school. Learned how to debate. Got 2nd place in Novice Nationals, my first tournament.
-Kept going with HATT even though I was discouraged. Had faith in my e-board. Raised a ton of money for an organization I care about. Got them filed under the Taylor Center for more funding and attention.
-Kept volunteering at Crescent City Cafe because I love that place. 6am wakeup calls are nothing compared to the joy it brings me.
-Ran a 10k and beat my freshman year time by 6 minutes even though I am considerably less “in shape” than I was then.
-Ran 9 miles x2, once in February as I was building distances, once yesterday when I decided to take charge of my day.
-Applied to things I was not sure I would get, which has always been a struggle for me. And I didn’t get some of those things. But I will tell you what I did get: Center for Public Service Fellowship for next year, an interview to do education policy research at the Cowen Institute, even though I turned that down, a grant to go to Women in Public Policy in January, a Fund17 summer fellowship (SOMETHING I THOUGHT WAS ENTIRELY OUT OF MY REACH BECAUSE IT HAS TO DO WITH BUSINESS SKILLS AND BOOSTING UP ENTREPRENEURS IN THE INFORMAL ECONOMY TO MAKE A SUSTAINABLE LIVING WITH THEIR PRODUCT IN THE FORMAL ECONOMY IN NOLA CAN YOU TELL I’M EXCITED)
-Reached out to professionals I would have never had the guts to before, which earned me a meeting with Matt Candler of 4.0 Schools, who I impressed and invited me to be a part of the Startup Weekend process in the summer
-Got active in the Taylor Center, decided I was going to take SISE classes next year, and got involved planning for the Design for America chapter launch next fall.
-Finally made a fucking professional email signature
-Picked my grades back up after an abysmal first month following a breakup/bouts of depression and anxiety
-Battled my anxiety with varying degrees of success all semester, but have accepted it, gone to school counseling, and am taking steps to mitigate it
-Survived without the group of friends I thought would be with me and solid for my entire life, maybe
-Met someone that I feel incredibly genuine about
-Started playing outside again
-Have gotten comfortable not wearing makeup
I still don’t take my contacts out before bed enough, I don’t set aside enough time to be creative as much as I want to be, I still don’t sleep quite enough, I haven’t gotten back into yoga, my phone screen is cracked because I hate phone covers, I spill shit a lot, I don’t do my laundry enough, and most importantly and notably, I have not always been a quality friend this semester to people who care for me. I haven’t always made the effort I should. I have had panic attacks in front of people I don’t want to stress out, and have asked a lot of my parents and those around me so that I can stay on my feet. But it’s the last stretch of the semester, the end is in sight, and going from the lost woman in Amsterdam, full of wonder for the world but despair and hate for herself to who I am now (capable, sure I am capable), this part of the journey is minuscule, and I will succeed.
