His smile faded a little. “Ah, but that life’s over for me. I made my choice and now I’m here. But I wouldn’t trade my boys’ lives for anything. Even the Qun, as it turns out.”
Aubrey’s eyebrows lifted with a very skeptical stare up at the big lug. “Well spies can’t all be wiry and shifty-looking. How would there be any good spies if everyone knew what to look for all the time?” People didn’t really expect Varric to be a spymaster either, what with his occupations as merchant (begrudgingly) and storyteller.
“For what it’s worth...I think you did the right thing. Maybe it’s because I’m not horribly religious, but I don’t think beliefs are worth more than family. And when you have a tight-knit group like your Chargers...” Hawke shrugged. “They become more than friends. It’s a family of choice.”
