Just a little fic for @local-gonk-droid-union birthday this month. I adore you so much and I'm so happy and honored to share a birthday month with the coolest person I know! I hope you get to enjoy lots of Dragon Age and maybe, just maybe in a galaxy far far away Din is learning just for you! 💜❤️
------------------------------------
“Din, what are you doing?”
The question surprised the mandalorian, not expecting you to be out of bed so late and wandering the ship. You had only gotten up for a glass of water after noticing your Beskared bed partner was not in his usual place huddle next to you as the usual little spoon. You followed the low stream of light from the front of the ship, only interrupting at the click of buttons and the small huff of frustratiing and a “dank farrik” as he lightly chucks the remote aside.
“Was trying to learn to play this game.” He mutters lowly, the embarrassment apparent in his voice even if you could not see his expression. Din turns the screen slightly to try and hide it, but you quickly snatch it away and immediately recognize it.
“Krayt-Dragon Age?” You ask, eyes adjusting to the light as you look up at him curiously. “Why? I thought you hated video games.”
“Yeah, but I know this is one of your favorites and I want to be able to understand who the hell Irving and Leliana are without looking stupid and having to make you quickly explain everything.” Din huffs, his frustration apparent as he leans back in his seat. “I never really got to do things like this growing up. Its not that I don’t like it, I just-”
You slowly take the controller from the empty seat and sit down, placing it back in his hand after restarting the mission. “Here. How about I walk you through each part? I would just do it and let you watch, but its easier to get if you do it yourself.”
Din hesitates, gloved fingers hovering over the buttons as if the controller might detonate in his hands. “You’re sure?” he asks
“Positive. You’ll pick it up fast. And I will give you the best instructing ever. I’m practically an expert on this game.” You say, somewhat proud as you ignore the scoff coming from under Din’s helmet.
For the next few hours, the two of you fall into an easy rhythm. You guide, he listens; he fumbles, you tease. The static crackle of the holoscreen fills the cabin, mingling with your laughter and his soft curses. At some point, you notice his shoulder brushing yours with each small movement, the warmth of his presence somehow radiating even through layers of beskar and cloth.
“I’ve died over 18 times-”
“Thats okay! Its a part of learning the game.”
When the first sliver of sunlight begins to bleed through the cockpit window, Din lets out a reluctant sigh and sets the controller down. “Didn’t realize it was morning,” he yawns, putting the controller down as you turn off the screen. “We better get some sleep. Grogu will be up soon.”
“I think because I taught you how to play, you should take the morning shift while I sleep in a bit.” You groan, stretching as you stand up.
There’s a low chuckle-warm and genuine- as he takes your hand and follows you back toward the bunks.”Deal. As long as you promise to teach me off storyteller and all the way to Nightmare one of these days.” He teases, knowing full well from watching you play in your own time that its never going to happen.
