Valentina probably had to get back to work if she wanted to have a quiet evening without having to charmspeak anyone, without people giving her annoyed looks, but she was having a good time, for once, talking to Hawk. It was a Saturday evening, too, and he probably had better things to do. Hanging out with his father, perhaps, or other friends. Hell, he could have seen a movie at the theatre, but he wasnât doing that. He was talking to her, which made her feel the tiniest bit grateful. The self-pitying tone she used wasnât intentional, because she was genuinely not sorry for herself. âI betrayed the entire camp to Gaea, remember? If you ask other people, theyâll surely disagree with out. Not that I care. They should get their heads out of their asses and look at themselves for a change.â She copied Hawkâs shrug. All the talk of hair made her twirl a strand of it around her fingers subconsciously. âYes you do. And donât you dare cut it off, because I will personally come after you.â It was so beautiful, it would literally be a crime if he did get rid of it. âThatâs⊠a very good point. And an excellent mentality at that.â Valentina had never considered thinking like that. Her family did make her feel worse about herself, even with them being out of her life. âThat sounds like an excellent celebration.â She couldnât help but chuckle, especially because he seemed so excited. âAwesome. Iâll text you the details - maybe next weekend?â
His dad would probably be wondering where he was but he could easily make up an excuse for where he was, there was no use in telling him the truth. It would just mean that he would get more interrogated about the fact he was talking to a girl. Hawkâs heart sank a little when she brought up the war. He actually frowned as he placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey, Iâve heard that people did a lot worse. At least you didnât actually fight with her. I stand by what I said, I would like to see anyone fight against something like that. Besides, if people canât get over that then...â He let out a little chuckle, âYeah they need to look in the mirror, Iâm sure no one here is perfect.â Hawkâs eyes followed her as she twirled a piece of her hair. She was probably going to give him a heart attack someday. âOh donât worry, I donât plan to! Iâve worked too hard to keep my hair nice to want to cut it off. No matter what kind of comments people make about it!â Hawk was right back to his old self as he smiled at Valentina. âYeah, so why worry about what those people think. They might be your blood but being here is like...being able to pick your family! You just have to pick people that make you feel good about yourself.â He ran a hand through his hair as the smile on his face grew even bigger, âSounds great! As long as you promise not to judge me for being a total fish out of water.â
