In Germany almost every athlete doing an Olympic sport is on a governmental support programme as they wouldn’t earn any money otherwise except the prize money they might win or bonuses they might get from their respective sports association (or they have a job during the summer months but then you need a very understanding boss I guess…) There are three options: the Customs Ski Team (e.g. Karl, Andreas, Severin), the Federal Armed Forces (e.g. Richard and Stephan) or the Federal/State Police (e.g. Markus and David). Athletes who have finished school and are part of a national squad (A, B, C, D) can apply for the programmes. They will have to pass an entrance examination just like everyone else and if they do they will be employed by whichever governmental body runs the programme they joined.

The ‘easiest’ is probably the customs ski team as they are not required to do any training for the job they are employed for but can if they wish to do so as that would give them better opportunities for after their career as an athlete. They also have the opportunity to get support in case they want to study.

The next one is the Federal Armed Forces where you at least need to do the basic training and then can chose if you want to follow through with the training to get to a higher rank (i.e. earn more money) or they can also study and be supported in that. For example Stephan: he would have started with the basic training where he would have earned between 800-1150 € (gross) during the first 2 years. He is now what you call a Stabsunteroffizier (i.e. he did some more training modules and now has a higher rank) and would be earning around 1800.00 EUR gross per month.

The last one is the Federal or State Police which is probably also the most demanding one but also the most promising for the future. The athletes have to go through training for four years, four months each year except the last year which is six months and it ends with their graduation as a police officer (what Markus did last year).

In my opinion, the Federal/State Police is the best programme as about 80% of graduates are being kept employed by them one way or another. At the Armed Forces it’s only about 2% from what I read.

From all the German jumpers that have finished school and are still actively jumping (around 30 athletes), only 3 are not part of any programme which means they basically have to pay for most of the stuff themselves unless they get a bit of support from the Ski Association or their local ski club.

So yeah, for them it is essential to be part of a support programme as it would be very difficult to compete on a high level if you weren’t.
