Sometimes, a small gesture means the world
Tom is apolitical. He would dream of being a squire's son like his father, rich and respected, rather than growing up in an orphanage in poverty.
Tom by nature is a very ambitious person. I think that he’d dream of a rich life even when he didn't even know about his father. And if he did, I don’t think he would be satisfied living a life like Tom Sr (a rich man in a small town).
That’s why I really like the way he was written in canon. Yes, he grew up probably bitter, and did a lot of evil things, but in the end, he became more powerful and influential than his father ever was. And he started it from nothing, too. I find that quite admirable.

Plot: Tom is a noblewoman from a fallen family, with only her family name remaining. She planned to intentionally catch the eye of the Malfoy family’s son, get married and use the money to rebuild the family.
Tom and Abraxas's marriage was a political marriage, the Malfoy family wanted the name of the Gaunt family, and also because Abraxas found Tom beautiful so he wanted to marry her as a trophy wife. Tom knew this in advance, so she planned to have an heir, then kill her husband to get his money and property.
After giving birth, Abraxas brought Harry home to take care of Tom and her child. Tom initially planned to poison her husband and blame it on Harry. However, the longer they interact, the closer they get. Tom begins to have feelings for her maid, to the point of sleeping with her. The two of them were looking too close, to the point that make Abraxas suspicious.
Tom initially intended to slowly poison her husband, after almost being discovered and Harry being threatened with eviction, she decided to deal with him once and for all. After killing her husband and pretend it was a burglary. Tom inherited Malfoy family's money and live happily with her new wife and her son.
“The Wizarding World wanted a hero – they still talked about the symbol the child was, how Dumbledore was sure to be raising him to be the perfect Gryffindor, how this whisp of a thing would, if ever needed, be their savior again, and Voldemort felt great happiness then.
He’d take it all away, he’d break their faith, he’d leave them with nothing but regret, pain and misery. Shame and hatred and mistrust in their highest regarded member.
He’d destroy Dumbledore and The-Boy-Who-Lived in one single master stroke of genius.
For Lord Voldemort would, once again, be brilliant, and charming, and beautiful and complete – after all, even if his soul now resided also in a tiny child, it would always be close by.
He would make sure of it.”
