AMANDA OWENS: THE ARTICLE
It is with raging affection that we bid farewell to Amanda Owens as a studio artist at The MakeSpace. A founding member of our community, Amanda is known among us for having the toppest of knots: her eye for aesthetics, her attention to detail and her flair for party-planning made her contributions to the MakeSpace of immeasurable value. Having served in administrative and events-planning roles, she also contributed to the Bloodlines and Gallery Walk exhibits in the gallery. We will miss her cackle, her traces of gold and glitter in every inch of the studio space, and we are considering changing the name of the organization to AmandaSpace.
Amanda trivia:
1. Amanda has never, ever, been in the MakeSpace basement. 2. For the entire duration of her studio tenure, Amanda kept a drawer of her desk full of doll heads. 3. Amanda knows more about sharks than is normal for a non-marine-biologist. 4. Amanda has a gleaming website.
For non-trivial information, you can cite any number of the articles written on her:
1. Five Questions for Amanda Owens (Harrisburg Magazine) 2. A Bracing Heartfelt Drama (The Burg) 3. At the MakeSpace (Harrisburg Magazine) 4. Fennec Design Lookbook (DaniFresh.com) 5. Fall Style Guides: Amanda Owens (PennLive) 6. Harrisburg Costume Designer Returns to Alma Mater (Messiah College)
See you soon, Amanda. We love you.
****
BIO: Amanda Owens is a costume designer and artist with an infinite love for textiles and the absurd. Her artistic artillery includes a passion for the intersection of highbrow and lowbrow culture and a BA in Art History from Messiah College. Amanda has designed and collaborated on several productions and projects for Gamut Theatre Group, including Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" and William Shakespeare's "Coriolanus". This fall, she returned to her alma mater as an adjunct faculty member and designer for the Theatre and Dance Department's 2013-2014 main stage season. Outside of costuming, Owens indulges her magpie tendencies by painting everything gold and leaving trails of glitter wherever she may venture. In 2012, she co-founded The MakeSpace, an artist collective in the heart of Uptown Harrisburg, dedicated to helping artists and the community get the resources they need.

In 2012, we chose the name MakeSpace. One of the best and most bittersweet choices we made was NOT to pick from the following list of delightful names:
Black Mold Art Studios We're Gonna Need A Bigger Art Co-Op Crap Bag Art Lab The Richard Dreyfuss Art Experiment Nebulous Leviathan From the Deepest Unknown Art Lab Fart Lab The Clogged Art-ery Co-Opt
We will always sort of regret this choice.
SHOW, Y'ALL.

PRAIRIE EMPIRE ANTHONIE TONNON CATAMOUNT APRIL 30, 8PM $5 DONATION BYOB ********************************************************* PRAIRIE EMPIRE "The nights that Brittain Ashford sings about with her Prairie Empire project are ones that take you on walks that will last the duration of the evening. You'll hear the night birds. You'll feel the yellow eyes of the nocturnal creatures coming alive, impatiently waiting for you to get off their lawns so they can find some breakfast and something warm to chase. You'll feel yourself slow down to a point where you can sense everything that's occurring inside and out. You begin to speak and it sounds like an explosion so you stay quiet and just listen more closely. She's escorting you through the twilight." - Daytrotter "The sheer emotive power of her voice, whether it be a whisper or a fiery, crackling, pull-on-your-heart-strings sort-of-yodel, captures a pain that everyone has experienced but only few can recreate. During "Snow," Ashford's voice dances on the verge of tears... and then out of left field a trumpet sounds. At this point I'm not sure what else this band could possibly throw in to make its live show more entertaining, and looking around the Beat it seems as if everyone else is also on the edge of their seats." - Las Vegas Weekly "The quintet play a ’60s-style folk, replete with somber strings and downtempo percussion. And there is real beauty in the subtle details you need headphones to pickup on..." - BushwickBK "Brittain’s bold, sultry voice defies her slight frame, taking up all available room on the stage... The subtlety of the instruments adds to the stark loveliness of their performance, as does the band members’ delicate harmonizing with one another." - Melophobe ANTHONIE TONNON Anthonie Tonnon is a songwriter and performer based in Auckland, New Zealand. He performs solo and with a four piece band. CATAMOUNT Catamount Coyote is the most current creative endeavor of a Central-Pennsylvania native whose work and performances have been circulating the local independent music scene for the better part of a decade. She has offered up hundreds of solo performances, both in well-known and loved spaces close to home, as well as many independent and DIY venues across the country. She has toured nationally, as an independent musician, and as part of the band Murderboats, sharing stages with many of her favorite friends and musicians, including Roofbeams, Gracious Calamity, Faun and a Panflute, Robert Sarazin Blake, Soulmobile Eternal, theillalogicalspoon, Adam Faucett, and many, many more. She has also been a core member and organizer for three separate non-traditional venues, one in a large commercial space, one in a townhouse, and one in the middle of the woods. Tara has hosted more than 150 shows for local and touring musicians from every corner of America (and beyond!). Her belief in personal connection and the DIY ethos is evident in her long-standing role as a facilitator and host for countless shows, as well as in her own artistic output. In this most recent endeavor, Catamount Coyote brings raw, honest material to the table. Known for creating a seemingly sacred and intimate space, she takes an ever-changing form: sometimes visual performance, sometimes musical, sometimes a prolonged and satisfying silence. Tara has for a long time stood out as a creator of moments, situations and reflections with her earthy, stark lyricism and sparse accompaniment at live shows. She released a self-titled EP in August of this year, which includes five new songs, recorded and arranged with the help of Josh Dean (Murderboats Music Recording) and Caleb Cossick (Tree Cover Records).

It took us almost two years to start a blog portion of The MakeSpace community. Here's a picture of what we looked like when we first got started.
There are even MORE beakers now.
