— someone called for room service?
synopsis: the captain of the first division, narumi gen, has been cooped up in his office, trying to achieve a seven-digit damage count in his game. too bad the head of the cleaning department (you) ruins his perfect attempt.
pairing: narumi gen x fem!reader
The constant clicking of buttons echoes in the dimly lit room. Narumi sits too close to the monitor, body covered with a futon. His bloodshot eyes track the character on screen, focusing on dodging enemies' attacks and countering at the right angle to deal seven-digit damage. Incoherent muttering fell from his lips, quiet enough to pass as breathing.
"Left. Left. Right. Sprint. Back. Attack. Attack. Skill. Dodge. Skill. Ultimate," Narumi mumbles, pressing the buttons on his controller. The character moves according to his words, managing to hit the opponent with five-digit damage.
Narumi curses. "Damn it! No crit? This game sucks."
He continues with his strategy. The strategy he painstakingly planned out for a whole three days. He didn't sleep, rarely ate or drank, all for the sake of coming up with the perfect rotation to secure the first-ever person to hit a seven-digit damage in the game.
He's so dedicated to his goal that even in the midst of a mission, his mind is torn between two ways: to swiftly neutralise the kaijus and perfect his game plan.
Narumi sees that his character has finally gained enough energy for their ultimate goal. He feels his lips curl upwards into a smirk. This is it, his mind roars. His shoulders hunch towards his ears, muscles tensing around his controller. He had half the mind to pause the game and wear his Defense Force combat suit to track the enemy's movement, but the thought quickly vanished into thin air when he realised that's not how it works.
"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon," he chants under his breath, inching closer to the monitor. Narumi doesn't care how it burns his irises. He pushes the itch to blink for a nanosecond, convinced that it would most definitely fuck up the moment he needed to click on his character's ultimate skill.
He feels his heart swell in anticipation as he dodges yet another attack from the enemy. His character says an action dialogue—his cue to counter with his fully energised ultimate skill.
"Ha! Take this!" Narumi shouts, pressing the respective button on the controller. The screen shifts to play his character's ultimate skill animation as he attacks the enemy. A burst of colourful numbers quickly pops one after another.
Narumi moves closer to the screen, his nose almost touching the glass surface. He feels a vein bulge on his neck at a four-digit damage; then, his heart skips a beat at a six-digit damage. His teeth chatter as the numbers flash on the screen.
The seven-digit damage count.
As if he's against a numbered kaiju, his hand moves with sonic speed. He fishes out his phone, opens the camera app, and focuses on the slowly disappearing seven-digit damage count on the screen.
Just as Narumi's about to snap a photo—the proof of all his hard work—, the doors to his personal office burst open. Someone flipped the lights on at the moment Narumi's finger pressed on the camera.
"Eh?" he mindlessly voices out, blinking rapidly. He looks at his phone—and nearly throws it out the window when a blurry white screen greets his eyes.
He turns around, eyes twitching, veins bulging from his temples, and teeth grinding against each other in irritation. "Who are you to enter my room, huh?! Didn't ya see the damn "Do Not Disturb or You'll Be Fired" sign?" he spats out, stomping towards you while waving his controller around. His futon forgotten on his previous spot.
You merely raise a brow at Narumi's antics. "Captain Narumi Gen," you greet him, uncaring about whatever he's throwing a tantrum about. You look around the room, feeling your eyes twitch at the mountain of Yamazon boxes covering the four walls of the office. There are empty cups of ramen, energy drinks, and protein bars lying around the futon in front of the monitor. You could've sworn you saw a cockroach fly by as well.
"I see you haven't cleaned the room at all," you state, crossing your arms in front of your chest. "Didn't I warn you three times already not to make a mess of the office?"
Narumi didn't appreciate your sass. Actually, he didn't appreciate your presence altogether. "Who even are you?" he repeats, looking you up and down.
"The head of the cleaning department, Captain," you introduce with a tight smile. "You know, the person who's been cleaning this godforsaken room ever since you became captain? The person in charge of the cleanliness of this base? The person who always makes this room spotless."
Narumi pauses for a moment, seeing the annoyance you're trying to hide. He mimics your pose, with snappier movements. "Hah?! Haven't heard of ya, lady. You sure you're not just some clean-obsessed freak trespassin' into my territory?" he retorts, leaning close to your personal space.
You also mimic his movements, almost butting foreheads with Narumi. "Maybe the so-called captain has memory fog from all that gaming. Guess you're not all that great when you couldn't even clean your own office, Captain."
"Talkin' back to your superior officer? I could get you on probation, just letting ya know."
"Joke's on you, Captain. You don't hold that authority over me," you laugh, pushing his face away with a finger. Then, you smile at him, all teeth and gum visible. "On the other hand, I have direct orders from Deputy Director Itami and Vice Captain Hasegawa to throw you out of the office if I see fit. Now then, shoo shoo, Captain."
Narumi freezes in his stance from your words. No way you're telling the truth! There's no way the Deputy Director and Hasegawa would entrust that level of authority to a nobody.
"Quit lyin', lady!" he yells, pointing an accusing finger at your face. "Why the hell would they even do that? This is my office, and I could do whatever I want in here! Matter of fact, it's my room, so you're clearly trespassing and need to get out."
You sigh, pressing a palm to your cheek like a wounded maiden. "Getting yelled at by you isn't on my agenda, Captain," you muse, hiding a chuckle when you see the great captain shaking with anger. You crack your fingers and knuckles, staring intently at Narumi.
Narumi takes a defensive step back. "No."
"Hard way it is, Captain."
You dash towards Narumi with unnerving speed. It surprises him for half a second. He raises both his hands to block your incoming attack, but you side-step and land behind him. He swivels on his heel, instincts on fire as his arm flies out to push you away.
You're quick to grab a hold of his nape, fingers pressing near his throat. To his growing horror and humiliation, you also manage to lift him from the ground like some sort of cat. He lies limp in your hold, blinking unevenly at the ridiculous scenario he finds himself in.
You, a nobody, are holding the captain of the first division by the back of his neck.
Narumi slowly turns his head towards you, a forced wide smile on his lips. "You got some nerve, lady," he hisses, feeling his jaw clench. "How dare you lift your captain like this?!"
"Who said anything 'bout you being my captain, huh?" You start walking towards the open door. Narumi trashes in your iron-tight hold.
"You can't do this to me! I'm in the middle of securin' my rank. I'm on a winning streak, damn it! Let go of me already!"
You all but smile at him. "Well, that's too damn bad, ain't it, Captain."
Once you reach the outside of Narumi's office, you throw him towards the wall. He lands with a yelp, eyes burning daggers at your pitiful attempt at hiding your glee. He's quick to be back on his feet, hands itching to return the favour at you. All the while, you're dusting off imaginary particles from your uniform.
"You'll pay for this…!" he swears, mind already forming a counterattack to the humiliation you put him through.
"Yeah, yeah. End my career while you're at it, Captain," you brush him off, gathering your cleaning supplies inside the office. "He's all yours now, Vice Captain!"
Narumi freezes at your words, again. His head snaps to his right, and his soul nearly leaves his body at the sight of Hasegawa standing there.
Hasegawa ignores Narumi, bowing gratefully to you. "I'll leave the cleaning to you, [Last Name]," he replies, a rare, genuine smile present on his face.
You salute Hasegawa. Then, just to throw salt at Narumi's fresh, open, and bleeding wound, you slowly mouth, "I told you so." You closed the door right at his bulging-eye-mouth-hanging-clearly-embarrassed face with a bang.
Narumi burst into a fit of rage. "You scheming woman! You planned this, didn't you—"
"Narumi," Hasegawa calls out.
The captain of the first division freezes on his feet for the third time.
again, i wrote this before rereading the manga, so narumi might've been out of character </3 but i did base my writing from the kn8 game so there's that as well hehehe
