@pressx2jump Murray, post Venice He opened the door to their hideout with a hint of shyness. Sly and Bentley let him do the honors, he might've been all for jumping back into his old mask, but there's still hesitations in his movements as he made his way in, looking around and taking in the details: the old cookie jar from the orphanage, the sofa and the old TV in the corner, down to his benches and weights - if it wasn't for the piles of new maps and scribbled plans left on the table and a few adjustments to make the place wheelchair friendly, he'd say nothing changed, as if no more than a few hours passed since he left them. It makes the big inhale that followed his first steps come as shaky. "It's. I'm sorry, it's been a while"
For a moment, Sly really thought - or... hoped, perhaps, is a better term - that when Murray would have opened the door to the hideout, everything would have gone back to exactly how it was before. He even insisted with Bentley to move the forniture as little as possible, to keep their usual set up as familiar as they could. he didn't know what emotion it would have caused in Murray - to be fair, he didn't even give it a thought until now -, but he really hoped it would have been enough.
But it isn't. Of course it isn't. So much has happened in these last years, going back to the hideout isn't nearly enough to delete from memory all the bad things and get Murray back as how he was - and Bentley, much less naively, expected that. Where Sly chases the dream of things returning as they were, he knew they simply wouldn't. Murray changed. Murray grew. It is only natural. Forcing him to backtrack is not an option. Who better than him can understand that?
ยซ There's no need to say sorry! ยป. Sly still talks first, a big smile on the face as he gives him a big pat on the shoulder, all the traces of any conflicting thoughts he might be having gone. Always the best when it comes to improvising. ยซ It has been a while! Take your time, big guy. ยป
ยซ Yeah, we're not in a rush. ยป Bentley adds, pushing the wheelchair inside and aiming directly for the maps, as he had always done. ยซ We can catch our breaths before going out again - and I need to check a thing or two. ยป He gets to the table, and before diving ino the maps he gives Murray a smile. ยซ Welcome back, buddy. ยป

ยซ P-pal? ยป. Oh, how he didn't want to stutter. How he doesn't want to consider Murray scary. Yet, those eyes, always so kind and happy, are now staring at him with such a terrifying glimpse, and he can't recognize his friend. He swallows with difficulty, attempts a smile that doesn't come. ยซ H-hey, it's me! D-don't you recognize me? ยป
His head is killing him.
He wasn't sure where or how he got in this situation. He remembered vaguely, uh... Sly telling him that Bentley had a plan. Starting a fight-- that was fun. That was incredible. And lots of spicy food. It was good, but made his head feel like it was going to blow up. And then-
...and then?
And then he ended up in a glass prison because of Bentley's plan. So said the Contessa, right? No it's unfair she was trying to manipulate him. But he was there because of Sly. No, because of Neyla. Neyla? Who... where is Neyla? He was there because of--
If Sly considered his eyes terrifying, he would argue that he was terrified. Granted, the guttural roar that came from him and the charge that followed, one directed straight towards the. Thing?? Blob? In front of him, one couldn't really think that Murray was scared.
He wasn't going to be scared anymore. He was a burden when he was scared. His friends thought he was a burden. Not his friends. His band. Those who used him. His family. His owners. Oh, what the hell is he thinking. His brain is about to explode.
Murray charging him, that roar he makes just before starting to run... Sly feels his heart jump in his throat, unable to keep in a chocked yell of fear ( damn it, FEAR?! ) as he jumps to the side, barely dodging his friend's attack. He lands a few feet from him, hand holding his cane feverishly.
Well, guess that answers his question. No, he doesn't recognize him. That... or Murray actually, sincerely, wanted to hit him. Wasn't it him that told him to get into troubles to get isolated? Wasn't it him that read wrong through Neyla, got himself unconscious against Rajan, and got him into that place to begin with? Sly takes a step back, lifting his cane in a defensive stance, swallowing with difficulty. No, no, it's just the spices, messing with Murray's head. They're friends! And they know none would put the other in danger willingly. That's the thief's life! That's a Cooper's life!...

ยซ Murray, please! ยป It didn't work the first time, but it doesn't stop him from trying a second time. Hitting him wouldn't change anything, if not give the spices more strength. He didn't let them win before, he won't let them win over Murray. ยซ It's Sly! SLY! Listen to me, pal! I'm here!! ยป

A slip. All these years, and he could still simply slip. It's such a natural mistake, nothing to really blame himself: the pipe he was hanging to in Rajan's factory suddenly gave in despite his light weight, and he couldn't catch the other piece of pipe in time, and fell. Nothing too bad, the landing was soft - except the landing was right into a pile of spices. He tried to hold his breath, keep his mouth shut as he attempted to get out of it, until Murray's hands came to his rescue and tore him out of the drugs, but there was so much he could do: he was covered in spices, he needed to breathe, and even the broken ยซ Th-thanks, pal-! ยป got inadvertently a few spices down his throat, making him cough. But it wasn't a problem, right? He brushed it off with a smile, his hands attempting to get some of them off of his clothes. Weirdly trembling. Did he get so scared by the fall? ยซ It's nothing, it's nothing, don't worry. I'm fine! Not a scratch. ยป
"SLY!"
The possibility that his scream might've alerted the guards didn't even cross his mind, so focused on his friend's safety. Bentley would've probably given him a earful, but the second he heard the pipe give in Murray abandoned his position, jumping a pair of levels down to immediately dig both hands in the barrel, uncaring if he inhaled any of those weird, mind-altering spices if that meant saving Sly from them. Worst comes to shove... well, one of them could improvise, the other could smash any skull that would've come to check the area.
"Are you sure?", he asked, his big hands still holding on the raccoon's body before he was finally left on the ground, patting his back as gently as he could to remove as much spices as he could "I mean... yeah, that could've gone worse. But it was still a big fall!"
Okay, okay, breathe. Just just needs to breathe and calm down for a moment. His own imposed calm makes him cough again, his whole form covered in so much spices to make it impossible to not breath them in unless he gets in a shower, which isn't exactly practical at the moment - more for the guards certainly approaching by now than for the water, as the factory sprays the plants with it, through freezing cold. No way he's getting a cold shower.
ยซ Yes, yes, I'm s-sure pal, I'm sure. ยป he replies, voice trembling just slightly as he feels the spices stuck in his throat. He pats his own arm, his mind racing and him following like a madman to stop it. Just a bit of paranoia, that's what it is. No way the spices work this fast, and despite his experience, a big fall is still a big fall: sudden and scary. It's only natural to tremble after something like that. It's alright. It's alright.
ยซ We'd... c-cough! W-we'd better hurry, the guards will be here soon... c-cough! Cough! C-can you keep them while I go back up to...? ยป He points vaguely up, while forced to stop to cough even stronger. Damn it, how many got into his mouth...?! He was in there for barely a few seconds!!

...give him a second. There was... that mask, in the Outback. And then, uh... does the snake-dragon in Haiti count? Maybe that one evil priestess lady? He's quite sure both were the opposite of a god, somehow.
"You're telling me you angered OTHER gods while I was away? Without ME?"
Ah, whoops. Slip of the tongue. There's the smallest hint of an embarrassed apology in his glance to Murray, before he shrugs in a "well, what's done is done" kind of way.
ยซ Sorry, pal... Didn't mean to, but they got in the way while on a job... I wanted to wait for you but angering them was the base for my survival, so... ยป He gives him a friendly punch, one that on Murray's massive form must barely feel like a feather. ยซ But hey, you're back now! There's the tiniest, smallest hint of regret in Murray's expression. Bentley's plan was simple, classic: he would've taken care of the guards, Dimitri would've done. The rest. Something about this being a... trust exercise?
"You realize that a failure on my part--"
-PUNCH! Another guard bites the dust! Or... the ground, anyway. It should be thirty-four, by now? And more to come.
"--it's also a failure for you????"
Dimitri really can't understand this group - or any, really. Even in the Claww gang the concepts of team and cooperation sounded always foreign to him: they weren't doing the same job, they barely even met! And they certainly didn't come to his rescue when he got arrested, tsk. This group, instead? Very fond of the whole counting on one another thing, of being a sort of family - YUK -, of trusting each other. Something they care so much about, in fact, to make entire missions just to build those precious bricks. Bricks he enjoys throwing in the face of others while laughing his butt off.
Foreign concepts. Sue him.

She barely reacted. Maybe, years before, she would've... I don't know. Blush? Get giddy about it? She used to be way more timid when she first started working the field, no matter how much she pretends otherwise.
Cooper, more than anyone else, knew that well.
Of course, things change with time. You get used to vague flirting, you understand when someone uses the right words to try and distract you. You learn that if someone tells you something like that they're taking the piss.

And you learn to talk while shooting.
He jumps to the side, letting Carmelita's shot hit the lamp he was standing on instead of himself. Its light becomes more intense for a second before exploding, leaving the corner of the street below in the darkness. Sly lands on the nearby rooftop, and keeps on moving. The dance started, and he won't certainly stop now - especially because he's hoping this way Carmelita won't notice Bentley and Murray rummaging in her office. A quick detour should be enough time.
ยซ I sense a slight irritation in your voice, Carmie! ยป. He turns towards her, and keeps running backwards, making sure to paint the stupidest grin on his face. ยซ Is it because I ruined your conference before? Come on, I asked sorry! ยป

ยซ Mh? ยป. It's almost embarrassing, he was so lost in his own thoughts that he barely heard her speaking, let alone noticed she was speaking to him. He smiles, politely and charming as usual, if not a little forced. ยซ Ah, sorry! I didn't mean to be rude. I'm... ยป. He hesitates. Glances furtively at the direction Panda King is hanging with the others. ยซ ... I guess I'm not very used to not be the most important member of the group. ยป
"Yeah, I kind of noticed you were uhm... spacing out."
It wouldn't have taken a genius to notice that things were positively tense in the base. They have been ever since Bentley suggested adding a demolition expert to the team, and got ten times worse once they met up with the other. They didn't really go in details as in why. Sly, Bentley and Murray didn't seem particularly interested into explaining their reasons even if the fact that there was some bad blood between them and the Panda King were obvious, the old man himself wasn't particularly chatty, and the Guru, bless him, made it clear that as much as he would've appreciated more harmony, he wasn't going to force anyone to talk. At least the hippo was trying to keep things together, cheer everyone up.
Weird. Interestingly weird.
"Look, I'm not going to pry anything out of you if you don't want to talk", the mouse sighed, jumping from behind the sofa she was leaning on before to one of its pillows, but still keeping her distances "but that last thing you said... i gotta ask. Did you mean the Panda King or Bentley?"
His smile can't but become just a little more forced. Him, spacing out. It happens so rarely - he lets it happen so rarely, with him always so focused on the task at hand, so full of thoughts and things to do. Having to take a backsit is forcing him to deal with feelings he always neglected to consider, and least to say he's really not liking it. And the whole Panda King situation certainly isn't helping.
He glances away, as if embarrassed to fully admit something so trivial as getting distracted, before her movements get his attention again and she asks the strangest question. That last thing you said... I gotta ask. Did you mean the Panda King, or Bentley? He's taken aback by it, and he immediately opens his mouth to reply that of course he didn't mean Bentley, what are you even talking about? But he finds himself hesitating all of a sudden, and his mouth closes without a sound coming out. He... didn't mean Bentley. DId he? He gazes in his direction with a stab of guilt. Bentley is near a map, instructing Panda King on an operation Sly didn't have a part in, none of them noticing him on the sofa. Pressed in one of its corners, like a hunted prey covering his shoulders, with his arms folded defensively and his leg jumping impatiently.
His eyes linger on Bentley first, and Panda King after.
And while on his childhood friend, he notices an irritating ping of envy; and yet, so much pride in seeing him becoming a leader of the gang - no... the leader of the gang. With everything they went through ( that... Sly had put them through ), seeing him rise despite all the odds is simply... inspiring. He doesn't know what he would have done if he lost his legs, probably despair for weeks or month; Bentley instead immediately got to work, built himself an ingenuous wheelchair to do anything even better than Sly himself, and look at him now! If there is someone who deserves to be the leader - actually deserves, through skills and hardship, not by the legacy of a name that is slowly starting to lose importance -, it's definitely Bentley.
Instead, as soon as he looks at Panda King, his mood sours immediately. He doesn't feel pride, nor confusion. He feels unfiltered rage spreading through his own body, and not a single instant of guilt. ยซ No. ยป. He's certain now. ยซ I meant the Panda King. ยป
He returns to look in her direction, but can't bring himself to look at her, nor attempt to seem his usual calm and charming self. If anything, those emotions made him spacing out become even harder to hide. He's... furious. Furious that the Panda King is in the same room with him, furious that he can't just punch him until he breaks his face, furious at Bentley for proposing his name despite being so proud of him, and he doesn't know to deal with all that rage. That's too uncomfortably similar to Clockwerk's.He hates it. He hates it so much.
He closes his eyes and draws a deep, long breath. It doesn't help the slightest with the rage, but it does clear his mind a little. It makes him realize that, as much as he doesn't want to talk about it, this is eating him from the inside too much to just pretend everything is fine. And Bentley and Murray endured him enough already to have this on their back again.
He forces himself to return to look at Penelope in the eyes, and slowly, he manages a small, small smile. ยซ How much do you know about the Cooper family? ยป he asks her. ยซ I can never tell how much people know. ยป

Continuing their jobs as thieves had been a challenge without Sly. Him and Penelope had to adjust, but when things started to work, they worked so incredibly well - even better than they did before! It was only a matter of time before they went big, and from mere attempts at the money of criminals ( ... specifically Dimitri's, because it was just too fun ) they went for the generator of fourth dimension's energy wave in a high tech, highly dangerous laboratory. It was the most important piece for the time machine, and they were going to get it. They didn't need Sly's agility, with brains like theirs!
And yet, Bentley alomst couldn't believe it, when the van came to a halt in their hideout's garage and they opened the doors to see their new generator, in their hands, taken all by themselves! They searched each other's hands instinctively, screaming and laughing and complimenting one another, and they suddenly they were kissing. All the sounds they were making get suddenly muted, just a small surprised sound coming from Bentley before the silence of a drawn kiss.
He's not sure how long it goes on, because it seems to last forever, but for his own experience it never is ( math tends to betray him in these moments, it's such a mystery ), but when they let fo og each other he's panting slightly with a smile that must be looking absolutely dumb.
ยซ ... y-you, haha, you made me forget what I was saying...! ยป he exclaims, not in an angry way. If anything, being interrupted this way is always incredibly pleasing. ยซ If you didn't want to listen, you could just tell, haha...! ยป

Seeing Carmelita always made him smile - yet, this time, it doesn't. It instead gives him a stab of annoyance, one he hates to feel, as she points the gun at him, ready for the umpteenth chase. He does his best to get a mocking grin on the lips, and it comes out as so forced he himself feels it much more similar to one of a wild animal. ยซ Not-- not this time, okay? ยป he tells her. Snaps at her? ยซ Not this time. ยป
It's not right, maybe. She openly accepted his help back in Prague, and now she was pointing a gun at his back, knee-deep in the snow. Some would consider it unfair; so, deep down, she admitted to herself that, in theory, Sly had all the rights to be upset.
In theory.
"Don't try to play victim, Cooper.", she snarled, her weapon still firm in her hands. At the end of the day, he was still a criminal and capturing him would be the ultimate proof that she was framed. In a way, his arrest would naturally lead to Neyla's fall. She wasn't going to lower the gun. She wasn't going to back away just because he was feeling nervous.
"Hands up! If you don't feel like running, then lets make this easy for both of us."
He feels so many things at once. Annoyance, nervousness, anger - betrayal? No, that's not the right emotion, not for him. It just doesn't work like this with him. He's the first one to betray any trust put in him, to tease Carmelita and then turn things to his favor. Dance with her, and then leave without saying a word. These are not emotions that he usually feels, this is not him. If not for the anger, perhaps, but not for her. Never for her.
These are not his emotions. He's not lucid. This is not the right time, Carmie. This really is not the right time.
But she doesn't put the gun down ( of course she wouldn't ) and it's getting late for the randevouz with Bentley and Murray ( and they're counting on him ) and this is getting ridiculous and irritating and a joke and hands up she says and he wants to screamโโ
He turns extremely fast in her direction, his usual careful and elegant gestures replaced with a single, precise, violent swoop of the cane to her hands, with the intent of disarm her and send the gun flying as far away as possible from them. Whether the intent works or not, Sly then remains motionless apart from the heavy breathing and the intermittent tremble of his hands, staring at Carmelita with unusual wrath mixed with confusion, as if deep inside he's giving her the blame for something that he considers big and important but even he can't fully pinpoint exactly what it is. Dilated pupils barely really seeing her.
There is a short moment of silence, as if that turn took him by surprise as well, and he didn't know what to tell now. Still, between heavy breathes, he manages a deeper one. ยซ Are you deaf? ยป he says - he snaps -, so naturally to stab himself with his own words. ยซ I said...โ I said, not this time...!! ยป

i. mun & activity. hello! i go by ghost, 29 years old, any pronouns. i'm italian, and english is my second language, hence you might see mistakes or weird phrases in my turns! i can get pretty busy and lately i worked to take the habit of staying as little as possible at the computer, which means that sometimes i can't get to it for days or even weeks. because of this, this blog, as all my blogs are, is permanent low activity! it might take a while for me to reply, but eventually always will! this blog is a sideblog of ghostories!
ii. adult content and tagging system. despite this is a blog for more cartoony and light-hearted muses, mature themes might be present very often regardless, because i know myself and the themes i like to write about. because of this, this blog is 18+. everytime a trigger appears in my turns, i will tag it with the name of the trigger, followed by "//" - for example, blood //. if i forget or don't think about tagging something, never hesitate to tell me!
iii. shipping, suggestive and smut. i tend to ship only with people i know, and write suggestive rarely and with the ones i trust the most. do not force a ship on me, because it's the right way to not get me to write it to begin with. as for smut, it makes me extremely uncomfortable, so i will avoid it altogether.
iv. starting threads and prompts lists. anything works for me to start a thread - prompts from lists or original ones, or plotting, anything! i just really enjoy writing, and love receiving things that give me new excuses to write even more. send anything anytime you like! i do my best to send often prompts as well, but i might always be a little late for prompts lists or for particular events for the aforementioned low activity. if you want to reblog a prompt list i reblogged, please go to the source and donโt reblog directly from me, unless the source itself is broken.
v. dropping threads. if you donโt feel inspired anymore for a thread of ours, donโt be afraid to drop it! no need to tell me, and i promise i wonโt get mad, itโs alright! due to my constant low activity, i know inspiration can simply disappear after a while. donโt be afraid to drop it and move on - we can always start something new!
vi. mun's drawings. i like to draw little things that might involve my muses as much as my writing partnersโ, and sometimes i like to post them. if the drawing is posted on the rp blog and i specify that only certain people can reblog, please do not reblog them unless you have permission. if i post them here instead than my art blog, it is because iโd rather keep them in a smaller circle.
vii. muses' thoughts. mun =/= muses! i often write muses i disagree with, and some of them do appear on this multimuse. what they do or think is not necessarily what i would do or think. donโt compare me to them.
viii. fixing and rewriting turns. if you canโt understand something i wrote, donโt be afraid to ask me for clarifications! as aforementioned, english is my second language: while i do my best, mistakes might not be that uncommon in my turns. furthermore, i might misunderstand your turn as well - if it happens, or if more in general i need to change anything in my turn for any reason ( be it also that i might have written you into a corner or you donโt know how to continue! ), donโt hesitate to tell me! i have no problems at all in fixing my turns, or even rewrite them entirely if necessary!
ix. turns length. i tend to write A LOT, especially when iโm very inspired by a thread. please remember, you donโt need to match my length in your reply! donโt feel pressured to write more than you wish, write as much as you want.
