the dorm is her own underwater dreamescape tonight. the movie playing on the television spills blue light across the living space in soft, blue waves. and chaeyeon simply sinks deeper into the couch with a green clay mask hardening over her face, and a towel twisted around her damp hair like she's some exhausted little bathhouse ghost. onscreen a woman stands beneath a streetlamp while rain paints the alley silver. everybody in old movies looks lonely in the prettiest possible way, you know?

she pulls the blanket to her chin and stares at the male lead through dreamy eyes, already halfway in love with him like's an actual real life man. somebody running through the rain for her like they've just realized life is meaningless without park chaeyeon is what she's after. the fantasy blooms so easily. chaeyeon has always been very talented at emotionally decorating empty rooms.

then the male lead opens his mouth and says something unbearably stupid...

chaeyeon freezes mid-sip of barley tea. her face mask cracks lightly near her jaw. she's genuinely betrayal. "there's literally no man that suits me..." she thinks. numb, she's still stuck on that line until the movie credits begin rolling.

she adjusts the towel on her head and curls sideways into the couch, perfectly content in the wreckage of her own impossible standards. somewhere out there, maybe soulmates exist. maybe cinematic devotion exists. maybe somebody is standing in the rain thinking about her right now. but until proven otherwise, chaeyeon decides her true love is self-care and old indie films where everybody suffers beautifully for only two hours or so.

synergy hovers between them. nayoung can only assume she means they need to perform or fill silence with the correct phrases, but nayoung catches the hesitation in her voice and it reminds nayoung of the beauty in language a little. of the first months in tokyo, when she knew all the right words but none of them felt like hers yet. how you can speak fluently and still sound like you're borrowing someone else's mind? her expression doesn't change much, but she gets closer anyway. distance has never been her instinct.

the mirror catches them together, two versions of the same story written in different fonts. nayoung glances at it briefly, as if checking continuity, then looks back at chaeyeon. there's a moment where she could say something witty and deadly. it would be so easy. it would fit the shape of her, the reputation, the expectation that she will always choose elegance over kindness. instead, she drops her arms, a small surrender to gravity, to the fact that she is here and not somewhere by the sea pretending she has no obligations. if this is what they're calling chemistry, she decides, it probably doesn't start with perfect words and sentiments. it starts awkward, a little unbalanced, and she can see now why the manager chose her. "show me," she says at last.

chaeyeon is stunned! because nayoung had done something deeply, profoundly unfair: she stopped being scary for exactly three seconds. which somehow made her worse. "right. yes. okay. totally!" she immediately almost dropped her phone. smooth, chaeyeon, super smooth. she caught it against her chest with both hands, laughing too quickly and too loud, the sound scattering around the room. it was weird, wasn't it? chaeyeon standing here in pink shoelaces and layered necklaces she forgot to take off before practice, trying to explain choreography to nayoung.

"okay, wait, this part is actually really easy," chaeyeon said, suddenly stepping closer, animated now that movement had finally entered the conversation. "you just go here, then here, and then your shoulders kinda…" she demonstrated it badly at first, wincing. "not like that. that wasn't right. hold on." okay this time was cleaner, sounding out the counts helped. "five-six-seven-eight and boom, boom, turn, pretty face, stare into the group, and yeah…!" she pointed at nayoung during the last part. "your turn, unnie."

nayoung, standing in the middle of the room, looks at her reflection in the mirrors with a face of profound betraying. her "country girl getaway" in ibiza has left her with a complete lack of desire to move her limbs in sync with anyone. she is wearing vintage archive pieces that are definitely not for the sweating, because sweating is something that happens to other people. it is a very un-chic emotion. but when the manager is announcing that chaeyeon—not a professional choreographer or miru, but chaeyeon—will be the one teaching her the steps today, nayoungs face goes through a series of complex, expensive emotions.

"oh..." nayoung says, before a smooth mandarin grumble that translates roughly to 'i am being cursed by the heavens'. she turns slowly, offering a smile that is 10% politeness and 90% "this is all your fault." "chaeyeon-ah," she purrs, her sarcasm so thick you could spread it on a baguette. "i did not realize the company was so poor they cannot afford a teacher and must use... you. how quaint." she crosses her arms, narrowing her eyes, already judging the first movement before it even happens.

chaeyeon felt her soul attempt to climb out of her body through the top of her head.

looking at nayoung right now was like staring directly into a solar eclipse: beautiful, but guaranteed to cause permanent retinal damage. it's always been this way, even as unknown trainees, nayoung was like a high-end porcelain doll she had as young girl that, it was hard to deny her space when she commanded a room.

'oh god, she's doing the eyes thing', chaeyeon thought, her internal monologue reaching a pitch only dogs could hear. 'why me? why today? i should have called in sick. i should have moved to a remote village in the mountains and started a turnip farm. "unnie~," chaeyeon squeaked, cracking in a way that was decidedly not confident and up for the task. she cleared her throat, trying to summon even a fraction of the authority a teacher should have. "it's not that the company is poor, silly! it's just... synergy! we're building... team chemistry?"

hyde academy was supposed to be the dream, right? its now netflix-sanctified, high-definition survival show. it was everything they'd ever been told to want, but nobody mentioned that the high-definition part meant you could see the exact moment the light went out in someone's eyes. and the "model" concept girlnextdoor has sounded so sleek pre-debut, so effortlessly cool until chaeyeon realized by this comeback it was actually just a fancy word for disposable.

she watched lee jae-yi in the reflection of her mirror, her silhouette a sharp line against the hallway. she didn't say anything to the girls. she just adjusted the strap of her bag and walked toward the exit like she was stepping off a cliff and expecting the air to hold her up. chaeyeon wanted to run after her, to trip her, to tell her to stay just so she wouldn't be the only one left who remembered the way they used to laugh before the cameras started hunting for flaws. but chaeyeon just sat there, her fingers digging into the velvet of her vanity chair, a silent witness to another mid-season funeral.

the industry is a hungry thing. it doesn't have a heartbeat; it just has a rhythm, and if you miss a second, you're the noise that gets edited out. she didn't even get to debut, just another nameless trainee...

later, she found takada miru leaning against a cold brick wall behind stage four. she looked like a statue that had been left out in the rain for too long; super elegant, but eroding. her eyes were fixed on a point somewhere past the rafters, somewhere where the "action" didn't hurt so much. i wanted to ask her if she felt it too, the way silence between takes was getting louder, the way the air felt thinner every time another girl disappeared from the call sheet.

chaeyeon wanted to breathe. just once. a long inhale that didn't have to be so performative. but the red light was already blinking in the corner of her vision, and the doubt was a cold stone sitting in the pit of my stomach, not moving. she was still here, and that was the most terrifying part of all.

PARK CHAEYEON is a silhouette against the mirror, feeling the glass leech the heat from her spine. she reaches up, fingers clawing into her scalp, tangling in the thick tresses. she wants to rip out a couple of strands out, feel the roots snap, but the lawyer in her head stops her. so the hair stays impeccable. the pressure also stays.

CHAEYEON: everything in this city costs...

ACT II. SCENE: the hallway of HYDRA. daytime. a 'house party' of busy idols and stylists. the character moves around, the folder tucked into her bag. she passes HASEGAWA HARU, a statue of sharp lines, then TAKADA MIRU. she looks for a tell, a twitch, a glance, anything; but the executive floor is a tomb. she hits her marks for the GIRLNEXTDOOR comeback with muscle memory and the silence becomes a shield.

ACT III. SCENE: the darkened practice room. 3:00 AM. the folder lies open on the floor. CHAEYEON thinks of the styling kits, the university applications in her drafts, the empire she mood-boarded at fourteen. in a girl group, she is one of many girls. here, she is a moment in herstory. she pulls a pen from her bag. it clicks. the ink meets the page. empire built on risky ground. for once she'll face the unknown.

🍃 SECTION I — Identity

Name: pyo chae-hwa, "blossom of the pyo lineage" (표채화)

Clan: fallen scholars! chaehwa once lived in a house of high-ranking advisors, full of servants, now reduced to a drafty estate on the outskirts of hanyang. her father's late-life marriage to a woman from a ruthless merchant guild has turned the household into a gilded cage of debt and duty. the woman and her two daughters making her life miserable, similar to that of their servants.

The Reputation: the pamphlets call her the "ghost in the kitchens." neighbors say she is a creature of soot and silence who only appears at the edges of the moving hotel to gather fallen plum blossoms. to the elite, she is a cautionary tale of a noble bloodline gone thin; to the servants, she is the only one who truly knows the rhythm of the steam-pulleys. a peasant girl who never forgets to smile.

🦋 SECTION II — Aura

Color: like a withered peach-pulp. a color of a fruit left too long in the sun. this pale gold that looks like exhaustion to the untrained eye.

Trigger: sound of a string snapping. might be a gayageum in the banquet hall or a frayed rope in the servant's quarters, if it sounds like something fragile breaking under pressure it completely shatters her, sending her running away or crying.

The Interpretation: the matchmakers see her "withered peach" aura and assume she is fading, "you are a plain girl with no vitality or social future." but beneath her polite bows is white-hot passion, vibrating so fast it makes her heart skip fast.

Arrangement: get ready for your hearts to break... she is being 'appraised' by her stepmother for a marriage (tw: age gap) to a ministry official three times her age, old like father. a man who needs a pure bride to wash away his own scandals.

Memory: she possesses a "phantom echo." in few dreams she has, she doesn't hear the rhythmic thud of the palace drums; she hears a electric pulse and sees lights that aren't auras, but neon, alive on their own. she remembers the feeling of running through a city of glass and thunder instead of a labyrinth of paper screens.

The Scandal: little birdies whisper that chaehwa has learned the geomancy of the hotel. people say she knows how to speak to the steam-pulleys and makes rooms move around. and that one night, she moved her stepmother's suite into the path of the waste-bins, a social faux-pas that nearly cost the family their invitation to the spring season this year.

it's been seventy-two hours, and the meeting is still stuck in chaeyeon's brain. she's currently haunting a corner booth in a café near the company, and her sunglasses are propped up in her hair like a plastic tiara she's too tired to wear. the planner in front of her is a wasteland of blank pages, save for a few frantic doodles: cute cakes sliced down the middle, crooked crowns, and two stick figures standing close enough to be a threat, labeled with massive, neon-pink question marks.

she doesn't look up when the seat across from her creaks. the air brings a specific, dry-wood warmth, santal 33, chaeyeon thinks. it's the olfactory equivalent of a vintage leather jacket: a cult classic that's been over-exposed by every cool guy in seoul, yet somehow, on haru, it still feels like a secret. it's understated. it's "i didn't try this hard" in a bottle. a flush creeps up her cheeks, but it's buried away for some time five years from now.

she finally meets his eyes, letting out a breath that's parts sigh, parts exorcism.

"so… are you actually doing this?" she gestures vaguely at the air, as if she could conjure the agency execs and their powerpoint dreams back into the room. "the whole co-ed experiment. shared dorms, which, no. absolutely not! i draw the line at communal bathroom schedules." she slides her sunglasses onto the table with a sharp clack, leans in, grabs his hands, and watches him, searching for a crack in the calm. "please. tell me you're spiraling. i need a spiraling partner."

it feels ceremonial, as if a procession is happening and no one rang the bell. france does that to things. even the air feels styled, all cold light and cigarette ghosts. chaeyeon's in half-costume already, hair clipped wrong on purpose, makeup base too clean to trust. the concept brief for this comeback echoes somewhere behind her eyes. limbo. 'it's not a debut,' she thinks, 'it's a rehearsal.' eight girls suspended in a space that doesn't technically exist, where contracts bend and the rules pretend they're flexible. chaeyeon loves it. but she hates that she loves it.

she spots naimei near the monitors and chaeyeon moves toward her automatically, and when she gets close, she just grabs naimei's sleeve, fingers buzzing, eyes too bright. "no, you don't understand," she says, words spilling as if uncorked. "they don't bring this level of archive out unless they really love us!"

the penthouse feels borrowed right from the sky, glass wall, soft gold light, and seoul blinks below. chaeyeon is by the window, half turned toward a loose circle of people, talking the way she always does, like she's afraid silence might notice her. "i think parties reveal more about people than interviews ever do," she says nonchalantly, eyes drifting across the room as if she's cataloging silhouettes. "everyone arrives edited, and then an hour later you can see which parts of them were structural and which were just styling." one of the insiders hums in agreement. chaeyeon smiles, pleased, and continues. "there's always a moment when you realize you're enjoying yourself more than planned. that's my favorite part. you can almost hear the internal struggle. very elegant. very human."

this influencer who used to repost her fashion line is smiling so hard it almost hurts. chaeyeon turns to her. "wait, we know each other, right? you reviewed the early line for my brand? i swear those clothes had personalities. that pink jacket was so dramatic, i'm embarrassed... but, if you put it on it you immediately draw attention." someone says something about the view and chaeyeon leans closer to the glass. "seoul at night looks unreal. like if you zoom in too much it'll pixelate. i love it though. makes me feel like we're in a game and i forgot what the objective is."

she talks about nothing and everything. about how gourmet food taste better when you don't know what's in them. about how award shows smell like hairspray and stress. about how she thinks chandeliers are just fancy constellations for indoors. "also," quieter, considerate of the thought itself, "some people practice until the joy evaporates, and others may call that professionalism." she angles her head, thoughtful. "others pretend they never practiced at all, as if effort were something to apologize for. both feel like a misunderstanding. there's nothing inelegant about wanting something badly." someone asks her if she ever sleeps.

she grins. "sleep is a suggestion."

the girl from instagram finally says, "i still have one of your old pieces." chaeyeon's eyes widen. "woah? no way. see? proof that nothing actually ends. fabric remembers you. cities remember you. parties definitely remember you." she laughs, they laugh, all breathless, and they keep talking, hands moving, thoughts skipping like stones. around her, glasses empty and refill, people drift closer without realizing it. outside the city keeps shining. inside her heart, chaeyeon fills the air, light, the night gave her a microphone and forgot to take it back.

"wait, wait— no, seriously, wait," chaeyeon says, the words spilling out before she can stop them. she freezes mid-rep, arms trembling in open rebellion, then sinks to her knees anyway, full surrender. the studio stretches around her in wood floors and glass walls a place built to remember. the mirrors catch everything she'd rather edit out. she isn't meant to be here like this. she's meant to be lit correctly, moving to counts she knows by heart. she lifts her head toward miru, instinctively straightening, her muscle memory still believes in authority. leader. the heart.

but she's just noticed something deeply unfair about the universe. "i just had a thought," chaeyeon says, breathless, the horror of it all. "our choreo? it's harder than our debut. like… significantly harder. isn't that backwards? shouldn't the focus be on our visuals?" her fingers press into the mat, grounding herself. "we were supposed to suffer then. now we're successful. shouldn't the reward be less… whatever this is." she gestures vaguely at her shaking, wobbly arms, at the mirrors, at her whole sweating, questioning not going into the fashion industry. her dads were totally right.

chaeyeon is trying so so so hard to look like she's paying attention to <3 him <3, really, she is, except the universe is cruel and he is standing approximately twelve feet away looking like he walked straight out of an editorial spread designed specifically to ruin her life. ridiculous. unfair. borderline illegal. and he's totally not paying attention to the way she's twirling her hair; she even did the bend and snap.

"so, um… yeon-seok? yeon-sik? yeon-soo…" she trails off, giving a gentle, apologetic hand wave. "sorry, i'm really, really bad with names. my dads say it's like, clinical." you see, it's not really yeonseok she's after. it's <3 avery <3 standing close to them looking like a lost philosopher en route to crushing her heart. so when the emo boy approaches her she decides to use him for bait. she blinks long enough to restart her entire operating system before forcing her focus back onto him. "but, what did you say?" chaeyeon is all dimples and batting eyelashes at yeon-seob-sik-sok-seok, pretending she isn't mentally writing sonnets about the way avery's jawline could probably cut fruit.
