Wandering hydra.
A weird, alien mermaid for mermay.
Troll nomad.
Little overwatch portraits done for practice in between things.
Here’s a little preview of two of the commissions i’ve done so far, will post completed versions in a bunch after I get more commissions done. Thanks again for 1000 followers.
Thanks everyone!
Do you have any recommended texts on digital painting that a devoted beginner can pick up, specifically to learn from a novice level to professional standards how best to go about the process? As a machine engineer who is growing increasingly more dissatisfied with my work, I would love to take those drafting skills and apply them to professional concept art! Your grasp of colour and organic form is something to awe at; I would love to know where to begin.
I’m not a professional, nor is my work of a professional standard, but honestly the best advice is to just practice. In terms of illustration I’m primarily self taught but a good place to start is Gumroad, there’s a whole bunch of immensely talented artists there with a whole bunch of video tutorials and tools (like brushes and shit).
Find artists that you admire, see what techniques they use, get a sense for how they create art and approach things. Keep a reference library and seek out concept art books for films and games, I have over a dozen at this point and provide a bunch of inspiration as well as provide a reference for what standard you should strive towards (i’m sure there are pdf’s out there).
But yeah, practice. Don’t settle into a groove where you’re only creating work you feel comfortable making. Find what you feel intimidated to draw and start practicing. Also don’t feel like you have to create work to be shown to people, I’ve drawn a whole bunch of shit purely to practice that nobody will ever see.
Don’t be afraid to rely on photo references, it’s crucial to learning how to draw realistically. As a machine engineer you’re already coming in with some unique knowledge, i’m sure you’d be able to create some kick-ass robot and ship designs.
One more Godzilla...
A loose godzilla to try get back into the swing of things.
Art dump of various character/costume designs for a silly Fantasy/Western mashup concept art project I did for university.
@grimchild
You have any reasoning behind holes between the ribs?
At a certain point realised I was just drawing man-bat from Batman, so it was an effort to make it look a little more undead.
(I thought it would look cool)
Someone on deviantart asked what an entire transformed vampire would look like based on the timeline I posted sometime last year, which gave me the impetus to clean up a piece that’s been sitting around for a few months.
I almost didn’t post this because of how nonsensical the wings are but anyway, here’s a dragon.
Some dragons done a few years apart (3 or so).
Trying to get my head around Zbrush.
‘Packs can number in the hundreds, often massing in city sewers.’
A long, overdue companion piece to my previous vampire timeline, which featured a female, bat species of vampire changing over a thousand years.
For this I wanted to do an inverse effectively, a male, rat species of vampire’s transformation over the course of a month (roughly).Â
I envisioned the rat species as a more degenerate, miserable cousin to the bat. Taking some visual cues from Nosferatu (obviously), the master from Buffy as well as the creatures from The Descent.
Anyway, these are a lot of fun and I’d like to continue this series and cover a more diverse range of nocturnal or parasitic animals to base vampire species off (like lampreys, birds, insects etc.)
Update w/ some new art. Sick of doing just heads and busts so here are some entire vampires next to a figure for scale.
I love your vampires! You mentioned wanting to do bird-based ones too. Those would be vampire finches, or maybe oxpeckers, right? As blood-drinkers those are all really weird.
Hey thanks! I haven’t given much thought to bird vamps just yet. I have considered Vampire Finches for the basis but not Oxpeckers, so thanks for that suggestion! I was also thinking maybe owls or vultures could be interesting.
In terms of visualising what a bird vampire would look like I’m not entirely sure just yet, I think there’s a fine line between not creepy enough and silly looking, as evidenced by these sketches…
