an actual laugh, an honest-to-god, lighthearted LAUGH       escaped his lips at her words, the grin lingering on his face       all throughout her words. he thought about sitting on a       kitchen table, eating cereal with CALM in the morning, &&       the image seemed so distant && strange it was actually       hard to BELIEVE it could have been something normal to       do at some moment of his life.
garland nodded at her words, GLAD to see they were on the              same page. that had been a part of the soldierâs life even before              the apocalypse, his motherâs words SUDDENLY ringing within              his brain, telling him to go step by step, rush wonâ ever leâ ya              nowhere, boy. the smile turned WARMER at the memory && at              ellieâs words. â that sounds good to me. itâs quite obvious by now              that we canât PREDICT anything that may happen to us â step              by step, thatâs the only way. â
She raised both brows at his peel of laughter.  âOh, so that is what that sounds like huh?  I didnât think you had it in you,â she teased.  âThought about tickling you at one point to see if you could even laugh at all but I figured that was not playing fair.â  It was obvious from the way she spoke that she was pulling his leg.  There werenât really many opportunities for laughter with the way things were. Sheâd just have to appreciate those moments when they could just do it.
âStep by step,â she repeated as if it was their mantra    (well, it really was).  She tilted her head, smiled a little.     âSo, in our bid to do things that way, why donât we figure     out our next step --- itâs obvious there is not a lot left     here.  So onto the next one?â
