Szymanowski - Nocturne and Tarantella, for violin and piano

Written shortly after WWI, this piece shows a mix of Szymanowski’s “Romantic” style with his “Impressionist” one. The nocturne is in a thick dreamy atmosphere that’s in its own eerie and sublime sound world. It’s thick in “exotic” Mediterranean harmonies that would define the “middle period” of his career. The tarantella is a wild virtuosic piece that calls back to 19th century salon music. Neither are light hearted affairs. I especially love the wild intensity in the tarantella, and the passage about a minute in where the violin descends in chromatic octaves, the piano ascends chromatically, and build up to a devilish scratching and plucking, banging on the piano.

Anyone who can read music can communicate across the globe, but each person sees it in their own way through their individual journey through learning music.

Almost like a religious experience, this music can easily pull the listener into a trance with each evolving chord through the progression, the consistent pulse with polyrhythmic writing that makes me think of the planets orbiting the sun, and the moons that orbit the planets. Or, less Romantically, driving through the Midwest and looking out the window, at the constantly changing road sines, power lines, fence posts, changing rapidly while the patches of grass and trees change every now and then, all while the road and the backdrop of the sky remain constant.
