Hi, I have today written about the question if disabled children should be aborted. I am pro choice but highly sceptical in this case. If we only let normal people be born, we halt evolution. The post is the newest. Kind regards, Nadjeschda

Hi, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to best answer this question - and have been for some time - so I’ll try my best.

Personally, I (Maggie) am pro-choice and I will never say that abortions are 100% right or wrong for that reason. I believe that getting an abortion is a personal choice, and everyone who needs one should be able to get one. Abortions can be downright necessary in order to protect the life of the parent.

That being said, I am against pushing for the abortion of disabled fetuses (often after the legal cut off date of 22-24 weeks). This often occurs when a doctor determines that the child is “at risk” of having Down Syndrome or other non-life threatening disabilities where the child will be able to live a life outside of the womb. I believe that this is ableist and eugenic. 

Furthermore, I do not like that non-disabled doctors are the people who are determining who’s life is worth living. Many non-disabled people claim that we should be aborted because disabled lives are filled with hardship and unbearable suffering, which isn’t true. Yes, our disabilities may/do cause us to struggle, but our lives are still worth living. It is ableism that is causing us to suffer, not our disabilities.

I feel like the reason that disabled children are being aborted is because of systemic and cultural ableism. So, while I think that abortions are okay (since the majority of them are), I think that aborting a child solely because they may be disabled is not okay. Disabled lives should be seen as equally valuable as non-disabled ones.

Abortion is kind of a grey-area because of this, so I think the best course of action is to educate the non-disabled community about our lives and show them that our lives are worth living. This won’t stop abortions from happening, but statistics have show that education does decrease the chance of unplanned pregnancy, which, in turn, decreases the need for abortions.

You are literally saying that mothers shouldn’t target disabled prenatal children for destruction yet you totally support their right to kill healthy able-bodied children. You are using reverse discrimination to support your twisted logic.

Let me help you: killing prenatal children is wrong, no matter their mental or physical challenges or lack thereof. Every human being is equal and should be equally protected from abortion. Period.

I am pro-life and honestly

I don’t care what percentage of Planned Parenthood’s services are abortion Or whether an abortion was late term Or whether it was due to a “morning after pill” abortifacient I care about the aborting mother’s circumstances because I love her, noting that her circumstances do not change the result  The result of every deliberate ending of a life in the womb, whether a zygote or a full term fetus Because guess what When the sperm and the egg unite  A life with unique human DNA is created

And I don’t believe I’m God I don’t believe that I can arbitrarily say  “you’re human now because you’re big enough you’re human now because you have a certain ability you’re human now because you have potential you’re human now because you have no disability you’re human now because you’re the right gender you’re human now because you are wanted you’re human now because you were expected you’re human now because your father is not a rapist you’re human now because you are independent you’re human now because you are loved.”

I don’t believe any human has the right to draw a line in the sand and assign other humans value.  Because as technology advances and enables them to keep younger and younger premature babies alive after birth, and your “viability” week line changes to 19 weeks, does that mean the worth of those children changes from worthless to worthwhile? Do they become human, these children of the future, when their ancestors at the same gestation were deemed non-human?

Any line we draw is arbitrary.

And I’d hope that, if someone is deemed human, it would automatically follow that it is wrong to kill them, no matter what. That they have rights, even if they cannot voice them, just as full term born infants have rights because they are human, even though they cannot voice them. Even though they are totally dependent on their mother to live. Even though they may or may not be wanted or expected. Even though they are small and fragile. They have human rights because they are alive.

No one contests that this entity in the womb is alive (except for the “parasite” camp, which most can see as the disgusting view that it is), nor do they contest that it is of the human species (as opposed to a cat fetus). What they contest is that this human life is equal to a “human being”, the loaded term that connotates a life with rights and dignity and equality with “us.”

And I do not believe human beings have the right or ability to assign dignity.

My rights do not require you to do anything.

If I have the right to free speech, you do not have to give me a place to speak, nor do you have to listen to me or agree with what I say. You simply cannot prevent me from speaking.

If I have the right to bear arms, you don’t have to give me guns. You just can’t take them away.

If I have a right to my property, you don’t have to give me property or help me protect it. You just can’t take it away from me or destroy it.

So if I have a right to life, you are not responsible for sustaining or protecting my life. You don’t have to donate your organs if mine are failing. You simply cannot take action to end my life.

If a preborn human being has a right to life, that does not require the mother to keep the child or raise him or her for the next 18 years. It also does not require the mother to sacrifice her life for her child’s.* All it means is that neither she nor anyone else should be able to take action to directly end the life of that human being.

*If her life is truly in immediate danger, her own right to life and to self defense would allow her to remove herself from the dangerous situation. In most cases, the safest way to accomplish this would be an early delivery. It takes less time than a late-term abortion (most life-threatening conditions connected to pregnancy arise late-term) and gives both mother and child a chance to live.

What About Equal Rights for Unborn Women?

Yesterday as I was leaving work, a young, African-American man stopped me and asked if I was “for” women’s rights. I can assume that if I said yes he would have asked me to sign a petition he was advocating. Because I was in a hurry, I typically would have continued on my way without engaging him.

However, because I have heard the term “women’s rights” at least five times in the course of the past week, and frankly, my patience is waning in the face of the onslaught of false rhetoric surrounding this election cycle, I couldn’t help but stop and chat.

I asked him, “What exactly are you referring to when you say “women’s rights”; what “rights” are we talking about?” He answered, ironically, given that I am a woman and he is not, “reproductive rights.”

Saddened and burdened by this response, I asked him “what about equal rights for unborn women?”

He obviously had not given that any thought because he didn’t know how to respond. After about twenty seconds he asked me, “is this a trick question?” I told him no and that I hoped he would really think about the point I had made.

If I had the chance to speak with this gentleman again I would have gently added that pushing reproductive rights is on the wrong side of history. Humans should not be discriminated against because of their size, sex, color, race, disability, etc.

I love everything related to the inherent dignity and vocation of women.

I’m grateful for my educational opportunities, the right to vote, my career opportunities the fact that I am able to lead a non-profit organization, a stark contrast from what the vast majority of women throughout history, and even living today have enjoyed. Furthermore, I’m grateful that I am 100% equal in dignity to my husband.

But I am tired of the damaging and erroneous idea that abortion is a positive thing for women. I have met so many women that profoundly grieve having been involved in an abortion. I’ve talked to a dad who lost his daughter to legal abortion. There is study after study showing the negative consequences of abortion — be it emotionally or physically.

Because of the cause of “reproductive rights,” approximately 30 million females are missing in the United States today — future Olympic athletes, scientists, doctors, artists, teachers, sisters, mothers, daughters, lawmakers, and maybe even a President.

Women deserve the truth about this issue. Abortion is profoundly anti-woman. Choosing life is empowering, not taking the life of your precious little one.

So you have a 13-year-old girl brought in for an abortion by an adult male with a different last name who the girl calls “Tim” rather than “Dad”.

She is examined by a Planned Parenthood employee without Tim being present. That employee fails to ask her any appropriate questions about her relationship with Tim or even whether she feels safe.

Tim is then present for a discussion of birth control methods, and tells the girl to have an injection. She disagrees and says she doesn’t want the shot. He tells her to take it anyway, so that she can be on birth control without her mother’s knowledge.

At least one Planned Parenthood employee was present for this conversation, and yet did not think to investigate.

Tim left the facility while the girl was prepared for the abortion. No PP employee took this opportunity to ask the girl any questions about her relationship with Tim.

The abortion was performed, and her preborn child was killed. Then the 13-year-old girl went to recovery, and was subsequently released from recovery and allowed to leave unaccompanied, where she found Tim outside.

Planned Parenthood performed an abortion on a rape victim and then allowed her to return to her rapist without asking any questions or making any reports about the suspicious circumstances.

Before anyone says “oh but it’s LifeNews,” the article links to the actual court document, which goes into more detail than the article does. It’s disturbing.

Planned Parenthood killed one child and let another child return to her rapist. So pro-woman. Such feminist. Wow.

To all those who couldn't come to the March because of weather:

We are so sad that so many were turned away from the blizzard sweeping the east coast. The roads are slick, the trains are shutting down, flights are cancelled, but there is an amazing light to all of this. Because the weather has been closing things down, it means that abortion facilities are also being closed. Lives will not be ended today, and that is something that we are so grateful for. If even one abortion is stopped because of weather problems, it’s a blessing. We would rather every abortion mill in America close for a day than have a swarm of people march in Washington. As the plaque over the front door of our office states, “It’s about the babies, stupid.” Always about the babies. God bless.

Have you been through my blog?  My life? Do you know how many people, strangers and friends, who have asked for my help in reaching resources when they are pregnant?  Suicidal?  Struggling with abuse?

Do you know how much I have donated to food shelters, or pregnancy centers?  Do you know how much I have cried and prayed over the poor girls that are raped and treated like dirt because their Extremist Muslim captors think they have the right to own them?  Do you know whether or not I have been face to face with homeless people, and laughed and talked with them about life?  Do you know that I run a blog on fertility awareness, and people have come to me feeling empowered about this new knowledge on their bodies?

Of course you don’t.  You don’t care.  You only care that I have a very different view on how to give support and compassion to women when pregnant.  And honestly, I don’t owe you a record sheet of all the good deeds I’ve done in life.

I’m sorry that you are so bitter that you wish my own daughter to get raped and pregnant.  I’m sorry that you can not control your emotions nor have the maturity to deal with people who think differently from you.  I’m sorry that you feel like the only way to justify my sin of being pro-life is to send me such hateful messages about me and my family.

So much for being pro-choice; you are all the same.  Very few people get blocked from my account, but I’d rather not receive more vile threats to my family’s safety.  Christ have mercy because your sister needs love from you, and you’re wasting such precious time spewing venom at me.

Silence in the face of evil is the same thing as consent to evil. There were so many who ignored the concentration camps of the Holocaust in Europe. It’s time to end the holocaust of the unborn. We will never be silent about the evils of abortion!

You know that pro choice is different than pro abortion right? I just believe that women should not have to give birth to a baby that they don't have the resources to take care of, especially if they're too young to be capable of taking care of children, and of course you wouldn't want to be forced to have a child with your rapist right?

Firstly, if you believe that abortion should be a perfectly legal choice, you are pro-abortion. If you are for the legal practice of abortion, you are pro-abortion. Just as we pro-lifers are called anti-abortion and anti-choice, your movement can stand to be called pro-abortion. 

While there are cases of pregnant mothers who are too young or are not capable of taking care of children either emotionally or financially, that does not mean that killing the fetus is the right thing to do. There are safe haven laws, adoption services, and plenty of other options that do not include the murder of an innocent human life. There are options so that both mother and child have a chance at life. 

If I ever was to get pregnant from a man who raped me, I know that I would not end the life of my child. I might not be able to raise him/her myself, but I can give him or her to a loving home that would take care and raise them as their own. The fact that I was raped, as horrible and tragic as that would be, does not mean that my mind, body and soul would be healed if I aborted my baby. It would only violate me and my body once again. It would also end the life of an innocent that did nothing wrong, but was only conceived. I could never live with myself if I did that to my own baby, regardless of the way of conception.

There are also so many stories of women who have been raped and have kept or adopted out the child that came from it. There are so many women who have given their babies up for adoption, or have overcome all the odds and raised their babies on their own. Of course, I don’t mean to bash women who have regretfully ended their pregnancies, but it goes to show that abortion is not the only choice, though it seems like the prominent one.

You cannot be pro-life except in cases of rape, incest, poverty, or any other circumstance because scientifically speaking, none of those things affect the humanity or rights of the preborn.

Likewise, you cannot be pro-choice and oppose full-term abortions, sex-selective abortions, or abortion being used as a means of “birth control” because from the pro-abortion standpoint, it’s still “her body, her choice.”

“If the unborn is not human, no justification for abortion is necessary. However, if the unborn is human, no justification for abortion is adequate.”
