Sorry if the color balance/lighting is kinda off this is my first time trying this sort of thing and it took me like 20 minutes to even figure out the printer enough to scan it much less try to fix it up lol

Currently working on making a website on Nekoweb to replace my nine year old Wordpress blog. The HTML basics I gathered as a teenager on Neopets is really coming in handy. (Peaking my nose into JavaScript however has been a bit of a nightmare.)

I'm not sure if I'll post every old piece of writing at once and then share the site, orrrr if I'll gradually post them and re-share them one by one on all my socials? We'll see. Either way, I've got one (1) new piece to share when it's done.

I have made so many breakthroughs since posting this hell yes. I made a blog page with pagination (and learned the word pagination, big fan of it) and am ... more than half-way through setting up two different filtering systems.

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):

“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.

“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.

“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.

“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”

“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”

“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.

I keep coming back to this text document in my creative writing folder with really intense prose that establishes a premise that I wanted to write about and explore that just . petered out. because I didn't have any plans beyond that establishment. No actual plot.

… I was talking about one particular document, but I think this applies to several.

I keep dreaming about surviving the end of the world. It's starting to seep into all my little writing projects that aren't complete enough to share any part of. I hope I can do it justice, if not once then again, and maybe again, or a fourth time, or at least once on my fifth try.

When I was 14 I could write three-to-four thousand words pretty reliably any day I sat down to write.

Now I sit down and write a couple sentences then feel overwhelmed and need to do something else for a while.

I don't want this to be a downer post so I'll add that my writing is a lot more sophisticated now and I have accomplished a lot of other stuff in my life since then. I contributed to an award-winning comic anthology, which keeps me hopeful that I can make something worth publishing again. And I still get very positive comments sometimes on that one Steven Universe fanfic I felt possessed to write in 2019, which keeps my spirits up about my ability to affect people with prose.

Anyway, this thought was inspired by the tiny bit of progress I've made today on the game I'm writing.

oh, i am finally old enough to know why my parents took so long to grab their coats. why they would ask us to get ready to go only to sit down for another round of coffee. what would i tell myself, at 10 years old? it’s okay. sit down with them too. take in the extra hour with your friend and her family. when you get home, write down every moment in your diary. one day you will be older and you will be waving goodbye to your best friend, and you will turn the key to start your beat up little car engine, and you will look back over your shoulder. her hair will be blowing in the wind and she will be beautiful and you will be, for a moment, struck by all of it. what you will feel is so wide and nameless that it will engulf you. and you will think of being 14 and kicking her under the table in math every time you wanted to whisper something behind the teacher’s back. you will think about how long the days felt, and how you could hold her hand whenever you wished, but you didn’t. and you will think about all of the people you could have lingered with. and you will wish, more than you have ever felt a wish, that the universe just gave you that - more time to linger. more time to say - i love you. i know i need to leave, but i don’t want to leave you. and when i go, i am leaving a piece of my heart that lingers too.

I've always been partial to the idea of a god who didn't understand the repercussions of creation, lost control of the world shortly after its conception, and tries desperately to make things better using a power beyond our grasp but still not all-encompassing enough or omniscient enough to really change things without also causing harm.

I was trying yesterday to return to the future spaceship/old wooden sailing ship sapphic short story I started a while back, but I realized if I want it to really hit and make sense I'll have to actually know stuff. about boats.

Doing Wikipedia dives is only gonna do so much. I'll probably need to find a beta reader who has a special interest in boats when I'm done to embarrass myself in front of. 🫠

The anthology that inspired it isn't accepting submissions anymore, so Idk what I'll be doing with it when it's done. Maybe a magazine would accept it? I'd really like to get my prose properly published, maybe paid for it. 👉👈

i didn't recognize my own disappearing didn't feel the color dissipate from the sky, as if all the pinks and golds of every startling sunrise and sunset fell into the belly of the sea, but even she lost every shade of blue that ever dared to belong to her it all turned grey before i could try to keep it or capture it in a painting and then all at once i understood i no longer yearned to paint to draw to color to write all the light and love in my life seemed to have bled themselves from my hands and i startled when i beheld them and found that they were not trembling you see steady hands are damning things - they mean that like the light, the fight has left them and yes, i wrote this poem in hopes i could find myself in the middle of these letters but oh, i know better and oh, i am already gone, i am already gone
