Like 93% of the self-contradictory behavior of fandom antis clicks into place when you realize the majority of them are victims of authoritarian training from birth
Or, to say it more clearly:
Iâm starting to realize that the majority of militant fandom anti-shippers were likely raised by parents/guardians who taught them that the unfamiliar/new is dangerous and scary (but if you do as youâre told & stay in the allowed boundaries youâll be safe), and in a culture that fondly nurtures both paranoia and a sense of in-group superiority.
the behavior of militant fandom antis start to make sense if interrogated from this angle. They are the actions and arguments of people who are
constantly afraid that they are in danger - danger of accidentally stepping outside the safety of their boundaries and of being harmed by exterior threats - and
seek refuge from their fear via (1) constant reaffirmation from the in-group that they havenât stepped outside their boundaries/they really are the superior ones and (2) showing extreme hostility towards everything (and everyone) else.
Theyâll do anything for anyone who validates them because being told theyâre in the right is their only protection from (perceived) danger. And itâs hard as fuck to break out of that way of thinking b/c even admitting you might be wrong is seen as endangering yourself.
Fear is a powerful motivator.
tumblr, in general, is a strong argument for a growing surge of leftist authoritarians
Friendly reminder, all human beings in all walks of life can fall into the trap of authoritarianism. Some walks of life are better inoculated against it, such as how leftism incorporates anti-authoritarian elements as part of that communityâs identity, but everyone can be affected by it, even people who otherwise identify as supporting left-wing politics.
Everyone. Every. Single. Person.
My theory is that authoritarianism is a form of cognitive flaw that occurs in human beings who reach physical maturity but are still emotionally immature. An emotionally mature human being is able to control their own reaction to fear.
Fear, being a powerful motivator and a primal emotion, tends to evoke strong reactions in people, and people who are not emotionally mature cannot regulate those reactions. And because all people need a sense of security for their psychological well being, people who cannot self-regulate and cannot generate that sense themselves will seek it in an external social structure.
They then build authoritarian power structures in an effort to feel that sense of safety, structures that require rejecting anyone who looks like them but does not subscribe to the same ideology, violently attacking anyone who is different from them, and generally putting the most violent asshole in charge to make all of that happen.
Compare it to the way that little kids seek the safety of their parents. Children donât start off being comfortable with change, thatâs why we protect them and keep them safe and help them regulate their fear so they can interact with things that are different from their experiences while they learn how to regulate their emotional states.
In children, that need for security and the reliance on caregivers is healthy and normal. In adults, that need for security and the desire to build power structures that give it to them, at the expense of the life, safety, and well being of others is unhealthy and harmful.
Imagine writing all of that shit just to say that you think people who think itâs wrong to write pedo shit are damaged and crazy due to strict parenting lmao
isnât this the person that said âantisâ are a result of 9/11 of all fucking things? like sorry OP but no matter how many essays and batshit theories you spew out to make yourself look reasonable and intelligent, youâre still doing this just because some people think writing or drawing children from TV/movies/books in sexually explicit situations for titillation and your own pleasure is disturbing and gross, and in some cases, borderline illegal. itâs really pathetic, and this is a clear example of someone substituting being in a fandom for having a personality. youâre all trying so desperately to turn yourself into these martyrs and warriors for free speech, when in reality, youâre just a bunch of creeps trying to find a way to justify getting off to child porn.
You sure do have a lot of theories about why Iâm running this blog, donât you? (And yet your only contact with my blog is this post and a copypasta cutup of another post of mine, apparently.)
Why donât I speak for myself for a hot second irt my motivations:
Mainly: I believe nuance is everything. Hardly anything is black&white âbadâ or âgoodâ, âsafeâ or âunsafeâ. For example: in moving to huge aggregate social media sites, fandom became easier to locate and adult/dark fandom content easier to access on accident. Realistically, we canât just censor all adult/upsetting content: so how do we keep underage minors/anyone who doesnât want to see this stuff from seeing it? What is the responsibility of the creator vs the consumer? Sites like tumblr and twitter make it hard to address things in nuanced ways, so Iâm trying my best to discourage simplified groupthink and encourage nuanced, independent thought on complicated & fraught subjects.
I prefer accurate education on potentially dangerous things to censorship of the thing. Censorship doesnât made hated things go away; it just pushes it into hiding. Pretending upsetting things donât exist by forbidding people from writing or talking about them doesnât actually make the upsetting thing stop existing. I advocate letting ppl talk about these things via fiction if they want while increasing education on the reality of the thing, so even inaccurate, bad fiction doesnât trick ppl into thinking the fictional version is realistic.
I think reality and fiction have a complicated relationship that canât be reduced to âfiction does not affect realityâ or âfiction affects realityâ. I use this blog to examine the actual relationship of fiction and reality.
I think fandom and activism have been conflated, to the detriment of both. When fandom/fanworks are âsupposedâ to be activist, it stifles creativity and hurts ppl who consume fanworks while thinking theyâre all activist educational material when theyâre not. I try to fight this conflation.
Words have definitions and they matter. people who defined themselves as âanti-[ship]â had begun to use words like âpedophiliaâ, âchildrenâ, âchild pornâ, etc in wildly expansive ways (Like you just did), which has been used to justify acccusing people who ship what they hate of being sexual perverts and child molesters. It upsets and tires me out, so I use this blog to address the hyperbolic rhetoric.
Iâve noticed a lot of abusive, cultlike behavioral patterns and intellectual dishonesty among people who argue fandom should be censored according to their tastes/beliefs. It makes me worry because (1) Iâve noticed that these behaviors are spreading, even to some people making counterarguments, and (2) the dishonesty and misdirection irt how to identify dangerous people in fandom is literally making it easier for abusers to hide. I do my best to point out the abuses and untruths perpetuated in the name of âanti-pedophilia/incest/abuseâ rhetoric - and to address that predatory people are on all âsidesâ in fandom, advocating for whatever their chosen prey advocates for - to protect people from false flagging.
I am increasingly aware of a connection betweeen fandom policing rhetoric and anti-kink/anti-porn rhetoric, which are SWERF arguments. I want to draw attention to radfem influence in fandom for those who donât want to be influenced by radfems.
I want to remind people who are targeted for harassment campaigns by people policing fandom that they are being abused, and no matter what they said or created that triggered the attack, it does not justify the treatment they are receiving.
I want to remind people that itâs okay to imagine and examine potentially harmful/dangerous concepts. It doesnât make you a bad person & doesnât mean youâre doomed to act on your imagination in reality. Fandom policing seems to have made a lot of ppl scared of themselves, and I try to dismantle that.
fandom is a microcosm that echoes the social climate itâs swimming in. For example: as authoritarian thinking has swept through America / the western world, so it has swept through English speaking fandom. Sociologically speaking, fandom is a great place to observe comparatively low-stakes behavioral patterns. I write about what I notice here.
Finally: I love fandom, and I want everyone - even fandom policers - to find fandom a happy place to be instead of an upsetting place. I donât know how we get there, but I figure talking about it is the first step.
PS: youâre right: I do substitute being in fandom for having a personality. This blog is purposely as personality-free as I can manage because itâs anonymous and analytical. I keep displays of my personality elsewhere. Thanks for noticing!
Letâs talk about the kind of response that these points engendered from @lord-kitschener and @benefitscrounger.
If you follow my blog then by now you know that one of the things I like to do is break down someoneâs argument to see if we can identify where it went right, where it went wrong, and where itâs out and out malfeasant.
First, letâs look at how @lord-kitschener tries to reframe the argument. Reframing is when you essentially recreate the argument, misrepresenting positions and recasting statements to make it sound like the argument favors your point of view, without actually saying anything at all.
To do this, they start by describing everything above as âall of that shitâ and then suggest that the argument is that antis are damaged and crazy due to strict parenting. This both dismisses everything thatâs been said while also fabricating things that werenât said in order to have something to be offended about.
Or, to put that differently, neither I nor @freedom-of-fanfic described antis as damaged or crazy and neither of us describe anti behavior as the result of strict parenting. Instead, we talked about how antis behave in ways that demonstrate authoritarian behaviors and that they were likely raised by authoritarians who taught them to behave in this way. Thatâs fairly likely, because the anti problem is a mostly US problem, and weâve had issues with a rising tide of authoritarianism for decades now.
In addition, @lord-kitschener also describes antis as âpeople who think itâs wrong to write pedo shitâ, to make it sound like theyâre virtuous. In reality, the antis attack anyone in fandom that doesnât conform to their particular brand of purity culture. Theyâll attack people writing about LGBTQ+ relationships, people writing about adults having relationships, and just people writing about ships they donât like.
By phrasing everything antis oppose as âpedo shitâ the intent is to make you think that antis represent some sort of pure and noble opposition to a predatory culture that abuses children.
This is either a misrepresentation or an outright lie.
Antis rather famously donât do anything to oppose pedophilia, as they attack people for shipping ships they donât like and then use accusations of pedophilia to make their attacks especially harmful. Theyâll attack survivors that use fic to deal with their survival, or just adults writing fic about other adults. The common factor has nothing to do with protection of children, it has to do with attacking anything that they decide is unacceptable. If antis decided to align against queer couples then tomorrow youâd see them arguing that anyone who writes lesbian fic is a pedophile. Somehow. Theyâd find a way.
Next, letâs look @benefitscrounger is attempting to completely substitute the arguments provided. This is a stronger kind of reframing than what we just looked at, sort of a full throated attack instead of the half-hearted one earlier.
First though, some context.
In the past, @freedom-of-fanfic wrote a great post about the way that 9/11 greatly amplified authoritarianism in US culture. Weâve always been a country struggling with authoritarianism in the form of racism, white supremacy, and other kinds of conservatism, but 9/11 really gave it a shot in the arm. After 9/11, the US became a much more paranoid and authoritarian place. We passed the Patriot Act. We invaded Iraq. We did so many terrible things. And itâs accurate to say that it was a sweeping cultural change for US citizens.
So of course, @benefitscrounger has to start off by mocking that analysis by reducing it to the idea âantis were created by 9/11âČ despite it not saying anything of the kind. All it shows is that if you if you suck all of the nuance out of a conversation, turn it 90 degrees to the right, and then squint really hard, you can pretend it says some pretty ridiculous things.
Next, they go full bore trying to argue that the only reason anyone argues against them is in support of child porn. This is another way in which antis try to control the conversation. Itâs also a lie, but hey, at this point whoâs counting?
Essentially, this is a lie meant to make you think that anyone who opposes antis is a pedophile. They think that, despite it being a lie, if they tell the lie enough times they think people will start to believe it. Because, unfortunately, that does sometimes work.
It also has another benefit for antis. If you describe everyone who doesnât agree with you as a pedophile, you donât have to bother defending your own malfeasant actionsâŠeven when they support the actions of actual pedophiles.
Hereâs a hint, the anti community has had problems with having real, actual pedophiles in their community that use the anti community as cover to groom and abuse children. But again, itâs like the Wizard of Oz. Antis donât want you to look behind the curtain or you might see that everything theyâre saying is bullshit.
That highlights everything I wanted to discuss here. These are pretty typical examples of the way that people will try to manipulate arguments. We all learn how to do this, itâs part of normal human social interaction to learn how we respond to various influences and what not, and people arguing like this are actively trying to shut down your rational thought. If they can make you base your judgment on emotions rather than logic, then you may not notice that theyâre full of shit.
Remember, when it comes to something that you believe, rather than know, you might care more about winning than actually being right. And despite being very very wrong, antis donât care as long as they win the argument.
That said, knowing how to see these things for what they are is really useful in opposing them. The kind of people that do this sort of thing usually arenât very skilled when it comes to making logical arguments and their behavior helps them disguise or rationalize away the harmful things that they themselves do. Learning how to recognize this behavior helps keep you safe from it, so you can continue to make the best, most rational, most compassionate decisions you can.
