Check out my original novel's blog - https://www.tumblr.com/novauniversetumbles
Usually i don't make pinned posts, but as i'm getting more active on writblr, i figure it's needed.
My name is Kamarie and I enjoy writing/world building/character creation. Most of you probably know me through my fanfic, but i'm an avid original writer.
My works are adult fiction populated by LGBTQ characters.
I am looking for writblr connections and fellow indie original writers!
DM/ask game/tag friendly! :)
My complete, free to read novel, Morning Stars, is currently available on AO3. I appreciate anyone who gives it a read!
follows Harvette Coin, an XO on a space pirate ship, and Teela Skyler, a housekeeper who barely escaped an alt-right cult with her life.
Morning Stars is a blend of space opera and drama with a thread of galactic magic and romance. It has the aesthetic of your favorite occult store ending up in space; of pirates dripping in gold jewelry juxtaposed against sharply dressed lifetime spacers wondering what life upon planets is like.
Tarot cards and stars and shimmering diamonds. Designer gowns and workboots. Sweaty, cramped freight ships and ornate space-bound penthouses.
It is the culmination of years of work, professional editing sessions, and is the first in a trilogy of novels as the galaxy faces a threat of a ruthless religious cult.
AND IT IS FREE!
The author has a separate career, and trying to pursue the world of traditional publication was discouraging and destroyed the fun i have writing.
It would mean the world to me if anyone would give it a chance now that i have it posted again for free.
(Especially as i hope the second novel will be complete soon!)
XOXOXO
And as always, writblr, my inbox is always open for collaboration and community with other artists and writers.
Guys if you want queer shit written by queers on our own terms you're going to have to start seeking out weird independent media. I'm sorry that's the only place you can regularly find it idk what to tell you, we can't keep acting like there's nothing if we're not getting blockbusters and triple A titles or whatever it is we're waiting around for. The thing you keep saying you want is already being offered for free by one person making a passion project on the internet and you would both benefit enormously if you interacted with it instead of lamenting that the only options we have for representation are pandering afterthoughts from corporate shit
I say this with so, so much care: Real queer shit written by real queers can and will sometimes make you uncomfortable. That's one of the defining features of weird, independent queer media. And weird independent media more broadly. Art that comes from true individual passion and authenticity has edges and bite to it that mass market corporate products intentionally do not. Has a rawness that can offend.
You are allowed to feel uncomfortable about it. But don't ask for queers to self censor for your comfort.
I feel like when I say ârelatableâ what I really mean is âresonant.â I donât want characters who I feel are like me, I want characters who have emotions so strong I can feel them through the page.
I think this is important because a lot of us forget the power of stories to make us feel things about characters who are not like us, who have experienced things that we never will. The purpose of listening to someone else's story should not necessarily be identification, but understanding.
Just a fun little reel of what I imagine the voices of the protags of Shackle and Noose sound like, I go into more detail about that under the cut. lol I'm more into animation than I am live action anyway, so I had a much easier time deciding on who I wanted them all to sound like than I have coming up with faceclaims for them all, whoops!
Pryseia
Even though she fills the role of the headstrong starship captain within the story, I don't imagine Pryseia as having anything close to a Han Solo kind of vibe to her. She's verbose, the language she uses skews a little more archaic, and while she is confident, she isn't cocky about it. I imagined her being softer spoken than what the tropes would dictate, in a casual conversation, that is. When shit goes down, that's when you'd hear the steel in her voice. I've been obsessed with Delenn from Babylon 5 since I was 8, because she's such a deliciously faceted character, and the way Mira Fulan plays her!?!? BRUH. lol it wasn't until the algorithm threw a compilation of her on my feed that I realized that I'd been writing Pryseia's dialogue with her voice in mind the whole time!
Nevara
This pick feels a little like cheating but in the wrong direction, because I imagine Nevara's race as looking like the Turians from Mass Effect, but instead of imagining her sounding like Vetra Nyx, Liara is who I have in mind when writing her. Nevara has a more archaic bent to how she speaks, but she's terse about it, an underlying thread of how she wants out of whatever conversation she's gotten herself into. I really like the odd cadence that Ali Hillis went for as Liara, but then I also really like the short yet furious attitude she brings to Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, so honestly my perfect example for Nevara would be Lightning's dialogue delivered with Liara's cadence, which is why I went for a clip here with Liara pissed lol. Nevara's got a deep well of anger in her, and this sample got her vibe across in a way I liked.
Rhea
Kinda cheeky and kinda flirty is what I imagine Rhea being like. She's been through some Horrorsâą, lemme tell ya, but she refuses to let that drag her down. For the sake of her own sanity, she tends to take things more unseriously than those in positions of power would like her to. After the life she's led, she doesn't put much stock in authority figures lol. Her own way of speaking is more contemporary, a little more crude and disrespectful than one would expect from a doctor of her calibre, but that all stems from her just having had enough of behaving the way others want her to. But honey, when shit hits the fan? Rhea gets serious. I knew I wanted Rhea to be from Earth, from Greece, lol because ancient Greece was the culture I hyperfixated on as a child, and Melissanthi Mahut from Xena Simulator Assassin's Creed: Odyssey just fit the bill for what I imagined of Rhea.
Malakh
Look, I've been on Tumblr since 2010, you think I wasn't OBSESSED with Doctor Who when the revival came out??? I always really loved Billie Piper's portrayal of Rose as a working class girlie, and that's more in line with what Malakh's upbringing was. She's very intelligent, but she abhors pretension. She speaks plainly, and to other people she'd sound lower class, because she's got no interest in living up to whatever bullshit standard they have for her. She's also the kind of person who hates it when others use big words just for the sake of sounding smart, being confusing on purpose just to make themselves seem more intelligent, so she often goes out of her way to break down complicated concepts so that anyone can understand them. She's also pretty unserious, but she's a little more judgmental with how she comes across to those she doesn't like.
Elytra
She hasn't been dealt quite as dire a hand in life as the others, so I wanted more of a younger, brighter voice for her. But she's also gone through some shit that's left quite the stain, so she's not gonna be sunshine and rainbows all the time, and I really liked that dichotomy, which Laura Bailey absolutely delivered with Serah from Final Fantasy XIII. She speaks more on the contemporary end of the spectrum, and she has an easygoing personality. She's also very empathetic, so she tends to be softer spoken with those that she's close to, while with other's she more professionally courteous. If you deserve it, however, she will not hesitate to tell you to eat shit and die. She's a sweetheart, but she will not put up with bad faith actors.
V'tala
Her upbringing was so sucks. She basically wasn't allowed to be a person for most of her life, so she's got absolutely no good feelings towards anyone in any kind of position of authority. I really really REALLY like the weight that Ashly Burch brings to the character of Aloy, who has such a saviour/martyr complex that dovetails nicely into V'tala's whole deal. Contemporary and brusque, she doesn't have a lot of modulation to her tone. She's been trained as a soldier, so she doesn't have much use for niceties. Very to the point. The longer she's away from the shitty conditions she was stuck in for most of her life, the more emotive she gets, but even then, she doesn't really emote a lot. Super dry and deadpan sense of humour.
Viatrix
Technically she's the baby on the crew (and I do mean that literally - she's an artificial intelligence, and it hasn't been a full year since she came online yet!), so I wanted her to sound a lot younger than everyone else. Emma Myers as Enid in Wednesday is exactly as bubbly as I imagine Vi sounding, and her vocal range has all these highs and lows I really enjoy. I really like the thought of an AI being very emotive and exploratory with her voice, lol just even finding her voice, so I imagine her being way more all over the place with the pitch and tone of how she speaks in comparison to the rest of the crew.
