Usually i don't make pinned posts, but as i'm getting more active on writblr, i figure it's needed.
My name is Kamarie and I enjoy writing/world building/character creation. Most of you probably know me through my fanfic, but i'm an avid original writer.
My works are adult fiction populated by LGBTQ characters.
I am looking for writblr connections and fellow indie original writers!
DM/ask game/tag friendly! :)
My complete, free to read novel, Morning Stars, is currently available on AO3. I appreciate anyone who gives it a read!
For the 93 fun OC asks: 8, 29, 50, 72, and 93 for Harvie, 11, 21, 45, 75, and 84 for Teela?
Ohhh thank you for the ask! And for specifying which one for which this is extra fun!!
Since you've read the book, i'm putting these under the spoiler tag so i can speak a little more freely :)
HARVIE -
8 - What do they believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?
I think Harvie is a believer in the general galactic spiritualism. SHe believes in the Gods and the magic of the galaxy, and that she will eventually become a part of the stardust one day. I think her beliefs about the afterlife are abstract and hard to articulate, but that she does believe that spirits exist and that she might become one with and a part of the greater galaxy.
29 - How would they describe their own personality?
Answered this a bit in another ask, but i think she describes herself as a guide and with her multi-lingual abilities. She very much has taken on her job as her personality.
50 - How would you describe their style of clothing? How would they describe their style of clothing?
I describe her as steampunk pirate queen in space. I think Harvie merely describes herself as practical.
I imagine her dripping in jewelry while wearing flight suits with steel-toed work boots. When dancing at marketplaces while Lance plays his fiddle, she would wear long skirts and shirts rolled to show her midriff to belly dance and twerk.
72 - Would they rather have stability or comfort?
I feel like these might be one and the same for her. She loves her stability of serving on Morning Star's crew, and even though it's not the most comfortable thing, it's 3-hots-and-a-cot and she knows where he next pay check is coming from.
93- What’s the most iconic line of dialogue they’ve ever said?
“Make it slow!” She bellowed, startling herself at her volume.
TEELA -
11 - If they could make a mark on history, what would they like it to be?
Have to pass on this one ;)
21 - What is their favorite thing about their personality?
I think she really struggles with this sort of thing for a lot of obvious reasons, especially since you've read the first one (you are amazing for that!) . She's just the housekeeper. Personality is irrelevant, if you ask her at the beginning of this series!
45 - How would they describe their own appearance?
"I'm kind of a scrawny, boyish one."
75 - If given a blank piece of paper, a pencil, and nothing to do, what would happen?
She would start working on an arrangement for music of some kind! In Super Nova, she's working on figuring out banjo plucking arrangements on her violin.
84- Which deadly sin do they represent best?
Wrath
Thanks for being awesome in general, Steph! Looking forward to reading more of your story too once i'm back from my trip!!
Going to answer these for Teela and Harvie, the two leads of Morning Stars.
5 - What’s their relationship with their parents like? What about other relatives?
Not good on both!
Harvie's parents have passed away before the story started.
Teela is no contact with her family, she's defected a religious cult that her parents are still a part of.
29 - How would they describe their own personality?
Harvie probably describes herself as her role as a guide--she speaks languages and dances and can keep you alive through almost any pass you want through Independent space!
Teela might describe herself as quiet. Or just shrug and say, "I'm the housekeeper."
55 - What is their alcohol tolerance like? What kind of drunk are they? How bad are their hangovers?
Harvie -- high, too high! She's a silly drunk, she's having a great time, but she's been known to drink herself absolutely sick.
Teela's tolerance is non existent. It was strictly forbidden in the Order, so she's not had a lot of opportunities to drink.
81 - Are they bothered by the sight of blood?
Neither is! They've both had a lot of exposure!
93 - What’s the most iconic line of dialogue they’ve ever said?
Teela takes this one, hands down over and over! But, it's too spoilery to give away :)
tysm!!! answering for evy, the protagonist/narrator of my wip
2. What is their sexuality?
Bisexual - probably around a 4.5 on the Kinsey scale. She spent most of her life with this unexamined and unacted upon - married a man at age 19 because she was pregnant and, to quote her directly from the text, “other options weren’t available to me when i was young.”
4. Do they have any siblings? How many? Are they older or younger? Which sibling are they the closest with?
She’s an only child! The product of a one-night stand with a mostly anonymous man (the best description her mum ever gave her was that he was ‘quite nice’) and raised by a single mother.
6. What would they give their life for?
At this stage in the day, the people she loves. She’s made more than enough mistakes in her lifetime as it concerns not protecting the people closest to her and has more than paid the price for them. she will not be doing so again.
10. What are some of their talents/skills?
First and most obvious one is ballet - she’s a more-or-less retired ballet teacher, and was only held back from a professional career by virtue of being too tall (and also getting pregnant at nineteen lol.) She is also a former stripper, and having absurd levels of stage presence is the foundation of most of her specialist skills. This wasn’t intentional per se but there’s also repeated references in the text to her being a good swimmer.

These are from Miles From Morning...
Out of nowhere, as far as he’s concerned anyway, I swing for him and the punch lands square on his jaw.
Complete and total silence.
Eyes rolling back. Sinking. Falling. Dark. Deja fucking vu.
Another breath against my skin, lower on my neck this time, and a whisper.
Not funny-ha-ha.
Sometimes I do exactly what I’m told in the most irritating way possible because fuck this place and everyone in it.

I love how some fics are called shit like "They Only Shoot The Birds Who Cannot Sing" and it's like the most insane porn you're ever read and then some fics are called Spit On Me and it's 18,000 words of the most achingly id-scratching prose you've ever read and they're both. They're both so fucking good. thank God for fanfiction.
It's that time of day my darlings! Tell us some wonderful little details for your original writing project or work in progress my dears! (No fanfiction please- it's a wonderful medium but not the focus of this blog post.)
TODAY'S QUESTION:
Let's talk fashion my loves! What are your MCs wearing?
my lead character is a retired stripper and slightly-less-retired ballet teacher; former artsy bohemian type, current disciple of kate bush, one of those cool older women who is consistently Flowy and wearing long vintagey shit with seventeen rings on every finger and a story behind everything on her person.
however, cannot abide anything besides flat shoes. Cool Older Woman(tm) until u reach her ankles and then it’s fuckass gardening clogs or something
this is one of my fav excerpts from my wip that deals with fashion
Hype people up for your original writing project (no fanfiction please- it's a wonderful medium but not the focus of this blog post) or work in progress by giving us some juicy details!
TODAY'S QUESTION:
Do you have any art of your story or its characters?
I have a few things. I commission the amazing @starlight-archer for art. I'm just doing basic character designs for now. Here's Harmony and Frankie! Perched on Frankie's Shoulder is Raoul, the team's sentient cockroach guide
"Tattoos are becoming unpopular", "piercings are unpopular again", "keep your hair natural never dye it again, it's the trend now" literally fuck off I know what y'all are doing
Happy STS! You have a beautiful scifi romance novel! What was your main inspiration for the Dreen alien design?
Hi! (Still working my way through Morning Stars, but I'm getting there!)
The inspiration for the Dreen comes from a few "yeah that tracks" places and a couple of "do what now?" places
The "Yeah That Tracks"
Listen, I know the James Cameron AVATAR franchise is Dances With Pocahontas in Space-Ferngully, but I love them. I love that Cameron used a simple story as the framework for advancing filmmaking technology, and I love that they hired botanists and biologists to design the world according to real biology and botany. I love that we got more than just the first film, and I WILL be going to see the next one. Watching those big blue guys running around in their tiny leather britches is where "Imma climb him like a tree" came from. You've read it, you know the bit 😉 Everyone is entitled to their favorite pretty garbage 💜
As I've said on MANY posts, STAR TREK: The Original Series saved me from a very dark place with visions of hope for the future, something everyone can use at any time but especially now. To be Dreen-specific, there's definitely a bit of Mr Spock in Doctor Ardus - he's more cerebral than expressive, distant at the start, meticulous, and kind of a know-it-all until you figure out that he's the weird one compared to other Dreen.
The Shape of Water - though not as "fishy" as the creature, I did love the practical effects & makeup that gave him his claws, fins and scintillating points of light. Hats off to Doug Jones for yet another amazing performance! I'm a HUGE fan of practical effects and makeup, and Guillermo Del Toro has ALL of my respect for using it over CGI. Sorry Cameron, but Del Toro wins this round.
Ice Planet Barbarians - I listened to several of these while processing hiring paperwork for CDL drivers, and took note of how much everyone online LOVED these huge blue beefcake alien dudes (noticing a trend here) who purr. I noticed that big size differences were a rather... large part of sci-fi romance books (pun 50/50 intended) and wanted to experiment with the trope myself. With great success, I think. I didn't really care for nor did I want to repeat the "sexy natives living in fancy tents" trope, which is why Ardus uses a computer and wears pants instead of relying entirely on his trusty bone knife and leaf underwear to survive. Sometimes I read the current sci-fi and fantasy romance novels for ideas, other times (most of them) it's so I DON'T end up copying what's popular right now.
The "Do What Now?"
I am TERRIFIED of leopard seals. They are big and scary and fast and I do not want to be anywhere near one. They scare me more than Great White sharks because they can breathe air and move on land, so there's just no getting away from them unless I go to space, and that's not happening either. Dreen are HEAVILY based on leopard seals, specifically their teeth, skin, nictitating membranes (third eyelids), closable noses and webbed/clawed hands and feet. I figured if I wrote a sexy book about them maybe I wouldn't be so terrified, but that didn't work so now I'm just scared AND horny 😆
The Yautja locs from PREDATOR were the inspiration for Dreen barbels, after a really long night of researching different kinds of hair because I REALLY didn't want to write a bald alien. That and the whiskers on catfish. Don't touch those, by the way.
Beloved Husband. Everyone is probably sick to death of hearing me gush about him, but I promise he IS real! When we met we were in college, me studying literature and him studying accounting, so as STARFISH was being developed we were both finishing up our final year and so I was still DEEP in an academic state of mind. He was a FAR more studious student than I (I mostly screwed around writing papers about King Lear and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and so his college 'persona' became something like 70% of Ardus's character. These days he's my beta reader, editor, advisor and 'logistics guy' - he examines my scenes and settings, asks questions and makes sure I'm not putting anyone on top of a table or inside a wall when I move the characters around.
Well damn, I didn't mean to write a whole other novel here but I hope that answered the main question and, like, 28 others you didn't ask! I'm still getting used to talking about what I do, so this helps me actually think of something to say that isn't "well I guess it's like Ice Planet Barbarians but it's not cold".
no i love this! I love hearing about everyone's processes.
I love that you took something like Avatar and gave it so much more soul.
I love that your aliens wear clothes and are more technologically advanced than humans yet are so different and care so much more for their planet! It's a wonderful vehicle both for romance and for a lovely academia story (as well as the hints of space travel/alien planet exchange visa applications and the works).
Fun fact - i was imagining your Dreen barbels more like the catfish whiskers but bringing up Predator now totally tracks.
It's very cool that you work with your husband on your writing as well!
