I have to say, I'm pretty bummed right now. I get that some people don't like cosplayers. They complain about professionals asking for money. They complain of crowding their booths and ruining their things (though I can't imagine these Cosplayers being professionals, who usually have their own booth). I understand not caring for people who ask to be paid for pictures of how they're dressed. I don't much care for actors who want to be paid $100 for a photo either. To say they offer nothing however, is false. Cosplayers may outnumber artists "20 to 1" but most of these Cosplayers are everyday people who come to a con for a bit of fun and because they have an interest in what's being sold. They want to attend the events therein. They want to shop-- just in costume. Cosplayers draw people, just like Elsa Cosplayers draw children. People come for "narcissistic"selfies with Cosplayers, because they have an interest in the character-- just like the Cosplayers do. These Cosplayers, spend several months crafting a costume because they have interest in the source material, no matter how small the interest. Horrible people though, to spend months and months patterning out a costume, drawing it out and cutting the pattern in muslin, checking the measurements, adjusting, cutting a new pattern, sewing it together, altering, hand-beading, trimming, with thousands of hours of back bending work, how dare they be so narcissistic as to want to take pictures in it. The ultimate narcissists. Take myself, I spent four years at university and $40,000 to learn to make costumes not because I think they're both beautiful and useful-- but because I'm utterly narcissistic. I'm not a professional Cosplayer. I cosplay because I'm narcissistic enough to believe that wearing a costume is fun. If it makes where I go more interesting for others, so be it. I buy hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise at cons. Going to cons is the highlight of my year. I'm not stopping anyone from going into the dealers hall or the artists alley. I'm going there myself. I don't stop or hold up walking traffic near the booths. Most casual Cosplayers don't Yet, You sit there in your place of influence smearing dirt in the faces of MANY of the people who are the reason you make money -- all because you don't get as much attention or billing as you'd like at cons. You don't get the placement you want. Everyone else is the narcissist though, the villain, because they do what they like and have their fun without having enough "regard" for you. Heaven forbid someone go to a con dressed up because they enjoy the source material without having a battle about where artists are situated. Travel arrangements, sleeping arrangements, packing, costumes, NAY! It should all be placed aside for the "plight" of these artists, who aren't getting the attention they "deserve". These wonderful mistreated artists, but I bet no one compared you to an SNL skit or made snide remarks about your weight -- until you provoked it today. The world is seeing you at your worst-- hateful people who would rather attack those who have supported you than to work with the true source of your grievances (the people running the con) and work to find ways to increase your publicity with proper advertising. You have freedom of speech and your own opinions, but perhaps aim your nasty remarks where they belong.
