My friends are too classy for this Earth.
Here's some of the other ones. I might post more later, but I'm lazy :P
Deal with it XD
Alright, so this is the first part of my photoset from GenCon 2012. We had quite a few people take our pictures, but these are all from Matt's (Venom) girlfriend.
The Deadpool we ran across was amazing, and quite fun to sit around and chat with. Me and Matt couldn't pass up the opportunity to get a few goofy pics with him!
Kyo (Me): Spider-Man
Matt: Venom
Thanks to everyone who took photos with us. It was so much fun!
I'll be putting together another set here shortly.
So, I embarrassed myself in front of Wil Wheaton at GenCon
Honestly, I was just a little starstruck, but here's the thing. I've known who Wil is since I was three years old. My dad watched the beginning of the second season of Star Trek: TNG with newborn me on his lap. I'm a huge fan of The Guild, and I like Eureka, and I like Big Bang Theory, and I love the Geek and Sundry stuff and I only recently retired from being president of the Indiana State University Role Players Guild, and we love Tabletop and that sort of thing.
My family doesn't game. My family barely plays Scrabble. My parents think D&D is full of sexual deviation and my father calls it a "level of escapism" that he doesn't want my borthers participating in. And then I discovered grown-up!Wil on the internet and it was kind of like,oh my god, I wish I knew this guy in real life because I feel like he'd get me.
And so I'm standing in line waiting to meet him at GenCon Indy 2012 and I'm literallywracking my braintrying to figure out what to say to him. I'm trying to think of some way to express the fact that it really is an honor to meet him, and that when I'm famous from my novels one day I hope we can be friends and talk occasionally about nerdy things like D&D and computer and all the other geektastic stuff we both happen to be into. I want to explain to him that I cried through most ofJust a Geekbecause I've spent most of my childhood and my adult life solonelyand realizing that this person whose face I've known since before I could talk is someone who is like me in so many ways, that there are other people like me that are completely accepted and like and celebrated, that meant so much. So I finally get up to the table and we make eye contact and I open my mouth to tell him in some finely crafted, moving few words all that I'm thinking, maybe in a way that will plant the seeds of friendship for later down the road when my novels are getting optioned for movies or whatever, and what comes out is, "Will you be my big brother? Please?"
He looked a bit taken aback, but then he laughed and said, "Yes. I will be your big brother, for the 25 seconds you are standing here. Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!"
He told me I have a beautiful name and I blabbered on about my mum naming me after a character from her favorite soap opera, and then it was over. Later that night on Twitter I tweeted at him about my emabarrassment and he responded with, "Stop hitting yourself! ;) " Which totally made my night, but I can't help feel like maybe I screwed up something really awesome.
Like, I said what I meant, kind of. I prayed and prayed for an older brother when I was little, maybe one that my parents had forgotten to tell me about, and he was off exploring the world and generally being awesome, but one day he would come visit and give me high-fives and read my books and tell me how clever I was. And as I grew up I became more familiar with what I would want my older brother to be like. And then I discoverd Wil Wheaton, and realized that somehow my imaginary older brother and Wil Wheaton were more or less exactly alike.
I should probably stop talking because the more I try to make this sound not-creepy the creepier it sounds. I guess what I'm saying is that I hope the next time I meet Wil Wheaton -- if there is a next time -- I can sound less like a creepy fangirl and more like an adult and an equal.
Post Gencon Blues
GenCon is over and I'm forced to go back to real life. How I miss the fun already! I'm surprised I still remember how to answer to my own name after being called character names all weekend. It's hard to adjust back when you've been living in a fairy land for almost five days. I'm a bit disheartened right now about cosplaying next year, I can't lie. This isn't to say that I was disappointed in any way. Quite the contrary. Everything was so above and beyond my expectations that it makes me want to put this year on a pedestal and keep it unchallenged. The choice of cosplay next year now that I've done two of my favorites is another difficult question. I feel odd reusing old cosplays -- though it appears perhaps my Kiki costume was not around as much as many people would have liked -- such are the slings and arrows of bringing two costumes to a con.
I've considered a Neo Queen Serenity cosplay. I'm a huge sailor moon fan and she's a recognizable enough character for a gaming convention. However, I'm concerned about the level required (difficult materials for the dress) and my body type getting in the way (short, busty).
It will require some thought. I'm sure I'll change my mind ten times before 2013 hits. Love to all of you who became my friends through Gencon and who bothered to read this blather. <3
