THEY WERE SIBLINGS, but where Hebe had taken to the family business like Brax had, Thelia had rebelled from anything that seemed remotely tied to the family name, except of course the fame and money. Loath as she was to admit it, though, Hebe somewhat respected the free spirited approach of their sister and didn’t wish her any ill will, but it was still up to Hebe and her brother to make sure that Thelia’s antics didn’t screw with their bottom line or meetings with shareholders; a loose cannon, regardless of how beautiful, can destroy not only the ship but the whole armada.

It was breakfast as a pretense that Hebe had invited Thelia out, and with a corner table out of the way in an upscale bistro, a cup of espresso in front of her, and her eyes darting between her phone and the double-glass doors, she idly wondered if her sister would even make an appearance. Slowly, surely, she started to believe that the girl would show up... if nothing else morbid curiosity and a chance to show off whatever new drama she had around her would draw her in.

The waiter hovered, and Hebe paid him no mind; she’d order fully when and if Thelia showed up and he’d deal with it. Another glance at her phone, another minute on the clock.

“well, it took us long enough to ensure our guests would have a ball!” she said, adding further in a whisper, “but just between the two of us, darling, it was ALL my sister’s work. . i mustn’t take the credit for her deeds,” she tucked a hair behind her ear, resting one hand on hebe’s shoulder. “do tell me, are you enjoying yourself so far? i have someone to introduce you to,” excitement gleamed in her eyes, but she held a contained smile, “he’s desperate to know your name.”

HEBE DIDN’T MIND. The whole of these events were people trying to one-up each other and holding tight to tenuous relationships and keep up appearances. She’d gotten used to the game, and though she didn’t participate as often as some people she knew, she’d grown accustomed to balancing politeness and her inner-rage, “Your sister has a fine touch. I imagine my brother had some hand in it since he was here early enough.”

It was always touchy somehow to bring up her brother. She understood that things were not always so cut and dry, but in the end she wanted what was best for her brother, so...

As she opened her mouth to respond to whether she was enjoying herself, the notion of meeting a suitor was brought up and she made a face before she could stop herself. Quickly it melted into that neutral stance she generally took and she nodded, “I suppose it couldn’t hurt and perhaps it would aid in enjoyment...”

She hated this.

HEBE COULD ONLY TOLERATE THE GLAD HANDING for so long before she need a reprieve. She’d shown up early only because she figured her brother might need the support, but the decision was taking its toll on her sanity at this point. With a lit cigarette in one hand and her phone in the other, she huddled near an overgrown shrub far enough away from the party itself to afford her some privacy but not so far that if her absence was noticed she couldn’t slip right back in.

With a grin, her attention focused on her phone and she shot a message to some unknown receiver, before lifting her eyes to peer up over the top of the shrub towards the person approaching her: fuck, caught already.

   “Sorry about that, didn’t expect anyone to come over.” She didn’t seem sorry, however.

as his eyes landed on his sister, abraxas couldn’t suppress the slight raise of his eyebrows at the surprise that she had already arrived. they knew each other well, and abraxas was well aware of his sister’s dislike of events like these. in the past, he’d witnessed her fake work-related emergencies to get out of attending. “hebe,” he said as he breathed out, his way of saying hello to the sister he was closest with. 

if they had been alone in a room, he’d have dropped the smile and sighed, letting her see the exhaustion of the day. but, he knew that there would be pictures of every second of this event, so he kept the smile plastered on his face even when she spoke. “i’ll try,” he said with a smirk before continuing. “i’m glad you made it,” he said, genuinely happy to have someone here who he could consider an ally. she may not be aware of the fakeness of his upcoming nuptials, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t still be a shoulder to lean on. “have you seen delia or thelia yet?”

TRUTH BE TOLD, IF IT HADN’T been for her worry about him, she might not have come at all, but Hebe had noticed the new tension in her beloved brother over the past bit. She might play at being uncaring with most and let her rage get the best of her, but for her brother she’d gladly throw herself on a sword ( despite the resentment at his position. )

   “Let’s just say I felt it necessary to make an appearance before people began to whisper gossip yet again. It’s not that I care what they say about me, but it might reflect poorly on you or the company, so...” Hebe lifted a hand, idly twirling it through the air; after she took a brief moment to glance at her phone, before her nose scrunched up.

   “I haven’t seen either of them, but I imagine we’ll see at least one of them once they’re three sheets to the wind and desperate for attention.” Hebe loved her family, but she didn’t understand any of them as well as she did Brax; he was loved, and others were loved but in a different way, and she felt it was clear enough in how they all handled each other. Even her twin.

“oh– welcome…” she fell flat on her face upon welcoming yet another guest. frankly, all adriana needed was a couple of mimosas, just enough to pretend she was having fun. thankfully cece was there to make up for the lack of interesting people. what were summer brunchs for except for pretending you liked enough people so that your life wasn’t as miserable as you thought? offering a handshake to the person before her, she tried not to wrinkle her nose at the horrendous outfit they had picked. “what an… interesting outfit…”

IN ADRIANA, HEBE ALWAYS GOT JUDGMENT IN SOME WAY but they pretended it was good natured as it was always guised under the notion of a pseudo-compliment. She didn’t seem to mind, instead glancing at her phone, then back up to Adriana long enough to lean in and press her lips near to her cheek.

   “You look lovely, of course. I didn’t have a ton of time to plan out and outfit what with having a job and responsibilities, but you really do look ravishing.” And the venom was already present in her tone, the anger she held deep within side barely restrained behind a sudden pleasant smile, “The place looks amazing, too. How long did it take you?”

upon his arrival, silas had spent the first fifteen minutes making his rounds across the room, saying the same things over and over - yes, he did get a tan, yes, he had been away for work again, yes, it was definitely good to be home again. then, once he was sure he’d said his introductions to everyone currently in the room, he picked up a glass of champagne from one of the trays and took a satisfied sip before speaking up. “i love brunch, it’s 11 a.m., and no one is judging anyone for their alcohol take. you do this on a random tuesday morning and you’re an alcoholic. you do it in the weekend, and it’s brunch.”

THERE WAS SOMETHING ABOUT THE STATEMENT that made her snort; she was already three mimosas deep in what could be considered morning drinking but with the knowledge that it would take more than that to topple her.

   “You say that as if anyone here would worry about that. Scandal pays dividends in press time which can easily be washed away with a good faith trip to rehab.” Hebe sometimes spoke her mind without holding back, but a winning smile met Silas to cloud the venom in her tone, “How many drinks have you had, I wonder?”

abraxas rarely felt nervous for events like these, but he had the feeling that something important hinged on this one — the ability of brax and adriana to sell it to the public. they’d been out, of course, and they’d pretended to get drunk on each other’s love for countless times. but today, so many eyes would be on them. he couldn’t show a single fake sign, not a sigh, or a roll of his eyes, or frown that didn’t make sense. 

he’d come to the reinaldi house early to help set up (delegate tasks for others to do the work), but as time had passed he’d realized all too well that it was almost showtime. and all too soon, guests had started to arrive. with one last look in the mirror to check there wasn’t a hair out of place, he turned to the person next to him and started talking, playing part of the welcoming hosts. “i’ve been saying it since this morning, but the reinaldi’s have outdone themselves. this is exquisite.”

HEBE KNEW HE WOULDN’T have expected her to be there so soon; she often went out of her way to be late to social events such as brunches, perhaps just out of spite. But as he turned with his usual spiel of good nature in being the dutiful host, she dipped her head with a curl of a grin across her lips.

   “Consider me your safe-haven, brother.” Hebe knew him well enough to know that his attention was strained and forced at best; he didn’t want to be here anymore than any of the others currently swimming in their scandals and secrets. With one hand still holding to her phone and glancing at it every now and again, she leaned up to brush lips near his cheek, “Relax.”

A thing she knew he couldn’t do, but she wished it for him, regardless of what was going on.
