what I hate him for the most

is the years I’ve lost with loved ones;

those in my same boat know

we’ve been grieving for a decade,

grieving a relationship that paused construction,

that we know now, will never be built,

not as it was meant to be;

for even in the brief years

when we quietly revisited blueprints—

when we felt a tiny flicker of hope,

the potential for re-development—

the trust was never fully intact

that the foundation would hold,

that the framework was stable,

and rightfully, so

because the collapse came again,

and far worse—

any progress made, set in flames,

leaving us with the undoubtable ache

that any future build

would only ever start in ashes,

and knowing,

there will never be enough time

to make it into a home again.
