A few of my friends had been asking me this question for quite a while, so I thought of writing it down so that it can be helpful to all of them and everyone else.
What is Heroku?
It is a cloud application platform that allows you to host small/medium scale applications free of cost, but if your application becomes popular, this free hosting might prove to be a very costly one as well.
How to set it up for running PHP projects:
If you havenât already registered there, go to this registration link and then enter your email id to register your account on Heroku. Check your mail for a link for setting up password for your account.
Youâll need to download Herokuâs application for uploading and downloading your content to and from their servers. (Here are links for ->Windows, Mac OS X, Ubuntu, Others )
Install this application on your computer and then restart your computer(Its must to restart your computer so that paths of the application will be set except you know how to do it manually by going into the advanced properties of computer).
After restarting your computer, open Command Prompt/ Terminal
Enter this command to Login to Heroku
(*you only need to write whats written in italics)
 It will ask you your login credentials of heroku that youâve set earlier. Enter the details and for the first time it will ask you to generate a public key, you just enter âyesâ and press enter.(donât worry if you donât know what it is, lets just say, it makes your connection with heroku a secure one so that no one knows what you are doing on the network).
Now youâll need to create one app on Heroku:
C:\Users\Gagan>heroku create thehelloworldapp --stack cedar Creating thehelloworldapp... done, stack is cedar http://thehelloworldapp.herokuapp.com/ | [email protected]:thehelloworldapp.git
âstack cedar, this argument tells heroku to make it a PHP server. In this example, the application name is thehelloworldapp that Heroku has created, just make sure you remember it(write it down) as weâll need it later.
Now youâll need to get the empty app you created to your computer so that you can make changes in it or add/remove files, for that weâll first need to clone that app to our local system:
C:\Users\Gagan>git clone [email protected]:thehelloworldapp.git -o heroku Cloning into thehelloworldapp... The authenticity of host 'heroku.com (50.19.85.154)' can't be established. This will create a folder named thehelloworldapp in the current working folder. As you can see, we need to write the exact same app name as we were provided in step 6.
Enter the newly created folder:
C:\Users\Gagan>cd thehelloworldapp
Now create one file named index.php in this folder so as to test your application, I used command prompt to do that as follows(press CTRL+Z and hit enter to save the file)
C:\Users\Gagan\thehelloworldapp>copy con index.php Hello World! ^Z 1 file(s) copied.
Now we need to update repository and commit the changes(you donât need to worry if you donât know this term also, just do as written)
C:\Users\Gagan\thehelloworldapp>git add -A C:\Users\Gagan\thehelloworldapp>git commit -am "Added one file" [master (root-commit) 67005ad] Added one file Committer: unknown <Gagan@.(none)> Your name and email address were configured automatically based on your username and hostname. And now the final step of uploading it to the server which is damn easy

Now your app is up and running, you can check it out by going to the URL http://yourapp.herokuapp.com (here yourapp is the name of your app that we created in step 6).
Eg:Â http://thehelloworldapp.herokuapp.com
All the hard work is done, now if you make any changes in the directory, all you need to do is step 10 and 11(from the same directory) to update or manipulate your working app on heroku.
Now you might ask, why to choose heroku when there are many other servers out there for free, well for one simple reason, its fast, robust and reliable in comparison to all those free servers available out there for hosting PHP files though one drawback being that you can only use Postgre SQL on this, using which Iâll explain later on.

Messing with Keys?
For guys who are still messing up with the keys or have changed their computers or operating systems, youâll have to do something like this also:
First of all remove all the existing files from the folder C:\Users\Username\.SSH (if they exist) Then on the command prompt:
C:\Users\Gagan\thehelloworldapp>heroku login Enter your Heroku credentials. Email: [email protected] Password: C:\Users\Gagan\thehelloworldapp>heroku keys:add Could not find an existing public key.
