PSA: Signs of a Multi-level Marketing Scam

Before you start reading this post, I just want to let you know I am a business student along with being an ex-MLMer with a few years of experience. The following post contains information that may be disturbing, along with my personal observations throughout my time there. I will provide you additional information of the list of companies that are currently into MLM, along with resources at the end of this post. What is MLM? MLM (or multi-level marketing/network marketing/relationship marketing, etc.) by core definition is a business model that is based on a compensation plan. This means it is solely designed to create a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation in the form of a pyramid (most commonly known as a pyramid scheme). You’d hear people from your social group be like “it’s a business opportunity of a lifetime!” or “the special interest of everyone’s desire to get time back” or “the salvation of this shitty world of broke ass economy.” All of that is bullshit, and I will tell you why. When you think of a scam, what’s the first thing that pops out from your mind? “Oh that person must have been a greedy bastard who wants everything for themselves. This will never happen to me.” Well, probably that person you perceive to be a “greedy bastard” was once an average working person who was making ends meets with minimum wage in an entry job. And everyone in this world probably went through this as well. Then at some point, people start to get desperate because they want to become more than what they deserve. This is a perfect opportunity for MLM companies to set up a preemptive strike with deception. Here are the key signs of someone who’s in a MLM business: 1) The Invitation: Someone who happens to be your friend, family, or even someone who you haven’t heard from for a long time will start to contact you out of the blue and will start to pique your interest with the following phrases: “a perfect business opportunity for you to be a part of”, “interested in making extra money”, “special interest for the better”, etc. Naturally, you’d get curious, and then they’d go all out aggressive on you to give into their invitation for the upcoming presentation - while avoiding any of the questions that you bring up.

“Trust me! Just come! I know you’re going to love me for showing you this opportunity! You won’t regret it, I promise you on that!”

i don’t think people will ever understand how tolling this shit is on black people. during the bulk of the ferguson/eric garner protests during november i fell into the deepest depression. i couldn’t fall asleep until 6 or 7 in the morning, my jaw was permanently clenched, no appetite. i had ridiculous migraines and i’m someone who rarely has headaches, i would cry out of nowhere, i felt paralyzed/paranoid in public around any white people even my own mother/friends. no one will ever understand how draining this is for us.
