here's a post explaining the bpd jeremy headcanon that i liked! (not mine)

nowwww how could dpd jeremy work? let us! explore that! personally i dont hc it but i think its SUPER interesting so im gonna talk about it anyway >:33 who knows maybe by the time this is done i'll be converted

sorry if this explanation is kinda shitty, I'm not super educated on BMC (my expertise lies in DPD), and since this isn't personallly something i headcanon i have to think a little harder

i think this is the dsm 5 for dpd so let's use that as a reference:

kinda small so i will type it out as i explain stuff. im not going to explain ALL of them, just the ones i think apply to jeremy/the ones we can see happen in BMC! (i'm trying to go off canon ^^")

A. an excessive and pervasive need to be taken care of , submissive, clinging, needy behavior due to fear of abandonment. This may be expressed by:

Difficulty making routine decisions without input, reassurance, and advice from others

ok so. for jeremy this much should be obvious. him being dependent on his SQUIP is actually a really interesting concept—he doesn't just use it to make decisions, he needs it—without it, he feels lost and helpless and alone. the SQUIP is always there, telling him what to do, when to do it, etc, which could cause him to become dependent on it.

before the SQUIP, i can see him being dependent on Michael. Michael assuring him that he's cool, he'll always be there for him, etc. and in The Play, when Michael comes to his rescue, that can add to the idea that he Needs Michael to take care of him!

Fear of disagreeing with others and risking disapproval

we can see this in the way he desperately wants to fit in with the people around them! he even goes so far as to make his—whatre they called—humiliation charts? in the book? i forgot exactly what theyre for but i think they could apply to this ^^ most of the musical is just him trying so hard to avoid disapproval from everyone, and he seems to conform to everyone around him! especially with the SQUIP in his ear telling him to fit in, he doesnt rlly disagree or argue with anyone (besides michael but michael is a "loser") in his attempts to fit in

Excessive need to obtain nurturance and support from others, even allowing others to impose themselves rather than risk rejection or disapproval

there is a thought process behind this one but it is hard for me to explain.........basically he like, does a lot of things i think he'd normally be uncomfortable with in his endeavors to fit in/not be bullied or rejected or hated/etc

Feels vulnerable and helpless when alone

just like!! jeremy seeks out relationships with his peers so he doesnt have to be alone!! and in The Play, when he finds himself in a pickle, he instantly calls out for michael to help him!!! because hes dependent on michael ahaha!!

Desperately seeks another relationship when one ends

ooh I can see this for Jeremy! throughout the play, he's constantly searching for connections, isn't he—forming more and more relationships as he tries to find somebody to be close to (the person he really wants to be close to is Christine, but that doesn't stop him from trying to form relationships with Rich, Brooke, and Chloe ^_^)

oh god yes. this is gonna be a long post so i’m leaving everything under the cut!! content warning for bpd-typical sh and canon-typical abuse (both are vaguely mentioned & not at all in detail)

so if you aren’t aware, here are the general symptoms of bpd according to the dsm-5:

i’ll be going thru every symptom jeremy shows in canon, the subtypes, and hcs!

- i hc him to have discouraged/quiet & petulant bpd but he has traits of all 4 subtypes. discouraged/quiet bpd is characterized by a strong fear of abandonment, bottling up feelings, self-blame, and self-isolation. petulant bpd is characterized by rapid, intense mood swings, irritability, a need for control, and passive-aggressiveness as well as pessimism.

- bpd is usually a direct result of childhood trauma. it is implied that jeremy’s family situation is not so great and that he’s suffered from neglect for a while now. childhood emotional neglect, especially in autistic children (which i also hc jeremy to be), can lead to the development of bpd

onto each of the symptoms:

- intense mood swings:

jeremy was having probably the worst day until he saw michael at lunch and then his entire demeanor absolutely shifted. another push toward my “michael is jeremy’s fp” agenda. happened again when michael was finally showing up in his field of vision. this happens around christine too, happy until she leaves then life is falling apart again. on the contrary, on halloween he also went from “omg michael i’m so glad to see you <3” to “wtf fuck you loser” within like 5 minutes of conversation after not seeing him for months lol. he clearly splits on his dad all the time

- strong fear of abandonment:

i don’t have much evidence for this besides thinking it’s a result of his mom leaving. he hates himself so much that he doesn’t understand how anyone could stay. he was prob assurance seeking asking michael why he stayed when jeremy was so horrible to him, he clearly cares about his relationship with michael despite his impulsivity and would hate to lose him for good.

- a pattern of unstable, intense relationships:

jeremy’s relationships tend to have something to do with idolization, which causes problems and arguments for him when others don’t do what he needs. for example: he sees christine as this perfect person who can do no wrong, his relationship with michael is very rocky and codependent, and jeremy holds vitriol against his dad.

- extreme anger/trouble controlling anger:

jeremy is so very pissy. he is probably the most pissy protagonist i’ve ever seen. he has a very short fuse and that’s evident from the very first “c-c-c-c’mon, go, go.” some key moments where he gets pissed:

- all of more than survive

- nearly any time rich or the populars step near him within the first 20 mins

- any time he interacts with his dad until the end of the show

- pissed at jake during play rehearsal because he’s flirting with christine

- michael brushing off his problems during 2pg

- loser geek whatever

- bathroom scene duh

- at the squip during halloween

- at the squip during the play sequence because rich and jake are in the hospital, christine doesn’t like him and michael thinks he’s a jerk

- and more

he’s most irritable in act two when he’s facing these situations that could leave the people in his life to abandon him, such as michael telling him that the one thing that’s been good for him is evil, admitting to christine about having a squip, dad confronting him about his shitty behavior. as someone with bpd i hate confrontation lol

- constant feelings of emptiness

is it just me or does jeremy look dead inside for 90% of the show

- a shifting sense of self-worth

obviously jeremy is very insecure and is open to being molded into someone else if it means he’ll be liked and fit in. how he feels about himself is based on how the squip speaks to him and how his peers view him. i mean he’s constantly going back and forth between “i’m shit and my life is shit” and “ohh yeahh i’m the shit” LMAOO

- acts of self-harm/suicide

okay so jeremy doesn’t really directly self-harm in the show, so this is more of a hc that he does engage in self-harm, even if the methods are indirect. it’s also kinda implied that jeremy struggles with being suicidal; rich mentioned he was depressed and suicidal before the squip, and there are a lot of parallels between him and jeremy

- substance abuse

this isn’t really in the show either. jeremy says he isn’t much of a drinker, so. he’s clearly tried it before but doesn’t enjoy it. he’s definitely had weed before, enough times to be part of his and michael’s routine. so i wouldn’t be surprised if he got dependent on that instead

- self-destructive/reckless behaviors

well. jeremy blew nearly $600 at the mall for a squip that he wasn’t even sure was going to work. untested, illegal technology that would implant itself into his BRAIN, and didn’t even take more than 5 minutes to think “is this a good idea”. all because he wanted things to maybe get better. which is absolutely insane. and throughout the show, he gets so desperate to be liked that he starts knowingly destroying his own relationships, like with his dad and michael. he decides to squip the school because he’s convinced it’ll be better for everyone. he stole his dad’s car to go to halloween. he engages in relationships with people he doesn’t know.

i hope these all make sense for my reasoning!! now onto my fun hcs:

- jeremy rich and chloe are bpd trio

- michael is jeremy’s fp and post-canon jeremy DOES go to therapy and they learn how to make their relationship healthy again

- jeremy’s regimen is 300mg wellbutrin xr and 150mg zoloft lol

- he eventually gets a cat and that’s his anti-suicide cat . she really helps with his emotional regulation

- i think he also will eventually get a medical card to treat his bpd-induced anxiety

- he suffers from auditory hallucinations ! not very fun haha but he thinks he hears his name being called a lot

- i think he also got rlly dependent on the squip . it fucked up his head for a while . it takes years to heal from it

- his bpd makes him very empathetic and have a big heart :’) jeremy loves with everything he has and is always trying to be better at loving others!

- jeremy is a crier. his anger is so very Wet Anger he’s a sopping wet cat that always cries. he’s sensitive but working through it. temperature regulation (eg, ice packs to shock the nervous system) is the way to go for him when he gets overwhelmed :’)

Can't sleep, so I thought I'd bless the world with a headcanon of mine about Jeremy and Michael

Jeremy is cursed to be the little spoon no matter what he does, and it really pisses him off. Not that he doesn't like it, I think he'd love it actually, but Jeremy's never been the kind of guy to "let" himself enjoy things. He'd twist it into something demeaning and emasculating somehow, someway.

Michael wouldn't even be doing it on purpose, he really can't help it. It's just how he is. Even if Jeremy MANAGES to somehow secure his spot as the big spoon, Michael always flips around in the middle of the night and they end up facing each other- which is worse to Jeremy, because it's really awkward.

NGL i don't really like the common headcanon that jeremy has some permanent physical scar kind of thing on him post-Squip. I get like if there were mental effects or something post-Squip but physical? Nah, just admit that you wanted to make your design more interesting
