I’m predicting a future plot point involving the Cluster.

As Garnet has stated, proper Fusion requires the two or more components are emotionally in sync. If they aren’t mentally bonded, the fusion can’t be held together, or is monstrous is one component is forcefully holding it together, like in the case of Malachite.

Let’s look at the forced fusions. They are in no way mentally in sync. Peridot even said that all the gem shards want to do is become whole, and they go crazy in an attempt to do that. The only reason they stay as “fusions” is because their gems are forcefully bonded together.

Now let’s take a look at the cluster. When Steven is in its mindscape, we see that all of the shards are collectively screaming “I want to be whole!” and they are in a panic. The Cluster, if it emerged, would have been a horrific monster just like the other experiments. But at the end, Steven gets the Cluster’s shards to start to talk to each other. The Cluster stops trying to form, and bubbles itself.

The Cluster is beginning to become in sync. While “talking,” the shards will realize what fusion is all about, and will realize that even if they are stuck together, they can mentally become whole.

Once they are mentally together, perhaps they will call to Steven telepathically. One of the gem shards in there has to have that ability, right? They will ask Steven to warp their bubble far away to somewhere in space and pop it, to let them, now whole, properly reform.

And it will.

Oh, and by the way, you know how all the shards of the Cluster are talking to each other now?

Who is the most stable fusion ever? Garnet. What was that line she said in Stronger Than You? “I am a conversation.”
