Hekate / Hecate:  the correct pronunciation of Her name is “heh-KAH-teh”, (or “heh-KAH-tee”

Goddess of magic, crossroads, ghosts, and necromancy. Greek goddess most often shown holding two torches or a key.  In later periods depicted in triple form.

She was variously associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, dogs, light, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy, and sorcery.

She was one of the main deities worshiped in Athenian households as a protective goddess and one who bestowed prosperity and daily blessings on the family.

She was regarded with (some) rulership over earth, sea and sky, as well as a more universal role as Saviour (Soteira), Mother of Angels and the Cosmic World Soul.

When her hand ran down his cheek he closed his eyes for a moment feeling as if something bitter sweet ran into his soul. 

Hermes didn’t feel the first tear but he felt his and being wet. He had covered his face as he didn’t want her to see. 

Hermes wasn’t stupid. He knew that most people would have been angry he doubted many would have even opened the door. He was a liar. A thief. A traitor. 

And she trusted him. He was someone that walked this side of alright and she trusted him. He didn’t earn it, he didn’t deserve it but she did. 

Still he shook his head slightly trying to stop whatever was clawing at his throat. Wiping away tears hoping that she hadn’t noticed.  

“Thank you. I just - I don’t want to. I don’t want to choose sides and battles. I - I really fucked up this time Hekate.”

     There was sharp pain in her chest as she saw a single tear run down the plane of Hermes’ face, that her hand instinctively wanted to reach out and catch, but then settled against it. Hekate wanted to give him as much space as possible, so she kept making her tea. Waited until the water looked dark enough, and for the air to be polluted with the scent of chamomile, before turning off the stove and grabbing two tea cups. “You didn’t do anything wrong Hermes. And you most certainly did not ‘fuck up’.” 

     She grabbed the two cups and placed them on the dinner table, then seated herself on one of the chairs. “There’s no need to chose sides or battles if you don’t want to, love. In the Titan War, my mother didn’t chose a side. And even though I was young, as young as a goddess can be, I didn’t chose a side either. Did it make me my mother an enemy? No, it only made Zeus chase her around the world. It would be unfair for them to ask such thing of you, and if they have a problem with it. Then they came to me, because I’m neutral. I believe we got ourselves into this mess, but I also think the humans might be taking it too far. And those are my opinions, and I dare anybody who shames me for them.” Hekate then took a deep breath after taking a sip from her tea. “What I’m trying to say is that it is going to be okay, but if you still want to get something out of her chest, then by all means. But I want you to remember that after it is all said and done, I’ll still be here- by your side.”

“Don’t be clever. I’m not as fast without my wings and you know it.” He said shaking his head more like a disappointed father, mocking his own situation. “And what will happen if I end up seeing Persephone or someone else instead? I’m sure she’d have a strong word about me walking through her gardens.” He did chuckle at the though of finding her through such a - well witchy way.  It sounded like something out of a book for zeus’s sake.

He shook his head slightly making sure to hold her arm like a gentleman he had told him to do. Lightly, but as if she was an anchor to floating away to the universe. The old bat had been insistent in teaching the disguised god. “Why miss I love you as well, but as you can see I am a very dangerous man. Full of malicious intent.” His voice was pompous and jokey wanting to get away from the serious tone. “And I’d have you know I think I’m absolutely stunning in the right light. I just know that their are purer hearts out there. And true. Right now I have a fancy watch did you know that they put weird stones in them now? Diamonds and things.” 

He sighed slightly. “Hekate, I’m sure Seth agrees with me. Its not worth getting yourself hurt. You’re one of the most powerful people here - and don’t you deny that. But I would rather have you healthy then anything else. I don’t think theres a soul on this island with a heart that would say otherwise.”  Hermes rolled his eyes shaking his head slightly. “Oh look we got a wise guy here. But the thing is Hekate. Darling. Light of my life or life of my light I was never really sure about that expression. Are you trying to trick a trickster? That won’t do at all.”

     Hekate bit the corner of her lip lightly as he retaliated her wise comment with another. A word in his sentence made her teasing smile, lower the smallest bit in somberness. “Your wings.” She said wistfully, remembering the magnificent pinions. “Do you miss them?” The goddess didn’t need them to travel to her skies, but she could imagine the grief of their loss. “Oh,” the goddess paused momentarily as Hermes made a valid point. “Well, you’ll say hi and then take another path.” The brunette finally answered, not having a more witty response. 

     She couldn’t help but shake her head as he insisted in painting himself in the darkest shade of danger. If she didn’t know any better, she would have actually believed him. But Hekate saw beyond his chest and into the muscle, and his heart was the clearest shade of gentle- it was streaked with mischief but nothing less than expected. “Oh yeah? So you’re like...” Her words trailed off as she started to think back to the night she had spent watching old movies with Thanatos. “Tony Montana!” She declared proudly at not only remembering the name, but at also having the knowledge of something ‘hip’. “Do they now? I didn’t even realize they placed it on their wrists! I can’t even compute how they turned such a big machine into a small compartment for your hand. Although I do believe just looking up towards the sky, would be the most accurate action. No need for a clock on your wrist.”

     As she heard his words, her mouth automatically opened to deny his claim, but later on shut at his next ones. Her gaze lowered at their feet as she sighed in resignation, there was truth and reason in what Hermes said but it didn’t lessen her want to help. “I just want to help.” She mumbled uselessly, almost childlike. 

     Hekate turned her hazel orbs upwards at him and then blinked them animatedly- in an effort to appear more innocent. “Well the only question would be: is it working? And I think it’s neither, and it’s ‘moonlight of my night’. And if isn’t, then I demand someone places it in the phrases book.”

He sensed the change of mood so quick it almost surprised him—though it shouldn’t have, it wasn’t rare for him to actually pay attention to Hekate and even the tiniest switches in her movements or expression, tone. And when she grew so somber and quiet for a few brief moments he only raised a brow in chill peeling under his skin at the back of his neck; something wasn’t quite right. 

“Promise you aren’t going to do anything stupid.” He couldn’t spend his days worrying sick, it distracted him from..Well, whatever he did, really. “I know you’re all badass titan and you could kick my ass like sleeping through Sunday’s mornin’, but please, please don’t do anything stupid, Te. Not alone.” He pressed her hand, seemingly going cold—or perhaps a tad distant, more than usually—and pulled her to go. “Lets get going, doll, it’s a bad place to be.”

     It was not in her nature to speak so violently against anyone, her words were so out of character they tasted like acid in her mouth. But the titaness had been pushed to the farthest edge, she had stood too quietly as they hurt the people she loved, the gods she considered her family. Hazel focused back on Seth as he advised her to not do anything stupid, Hekate almost scoffed but then sobered quickly at the mistakes she has done. 

     But her counter attack needed to be well thought of, it needs to be fermented to the point of perfection, where nothing could go wrong. She noticed her stretch of silence would further alarm him, so she gave him a quick nod. “Not do anything stupid, got it.” The goddess didn’t promise that she wouldn’t do anything- just that it wouldn’t be stupid. At feeling him grasp her hand, she squeezed his in her much smaller one. “I second that, it’s giving me the ‘heebie jeebies’.” Hekate answered back, repeating what she once heard.

He got up full, his fingers wrapping around hers just a tad tighter—a familiar wave of warmth, perhaps that was what he needed to do. The helplessness of the situation infuriated him, but then again, he could do nothing about it. The last time someone did something it all end up bad. So he looked at her, and gave a slight nod before his muscles froze for a short second. “Wait,” he spoke, his voice still husky, a slight frown settling again.

“Where am I?”

His gaze went up, and all around the place he found himself to be in—unknown, his brain unable to recognize it. “How many others..?” Seth shook his head, only feeling pain peeling into it, and nothing besides that with him trying to comprehend. “Doesn’t matter, we need to get you somewhere safe, Te. Come on.”

     Hekate let out a relieved sigh as he stood up and was fairly well. When he asked about their whereabouts, the goddess seemed to realize that where they stood wasn’t usual, or normal. Her brows furrowed at the center as she looked around, hazel gaze trying to capture every tiny detail the room offered. A small part of her wanted vengeance, to inflict revenge on the people that cause pain on her family. How dare they? Her sudden change of feelings startled her, she was never prone to violence, but at those very moments her hands sparked to life with magic and a dark urge. 

     She vaguely heard Seth in the background, Hekate was too deep in her thoughts to answer him, so she simply nodded and started walking out towards where she entered. 

     “They’ll pay.” The words suddenly pierced the air, they sounded strange coming out of her, her mouth not being used to uttering threats. Her eyes were glassy, almost hypnotized, as she kept recalling every bad thing that seemed to befall upon them. “One way or another, I don’t care, they’ll answer to everything they’ve done.” The atmosphere around them changed with her feelings, her powers slightly increasing with the fuel of her anger.

Hermes was surprised she hadn’t yelled at him. He would have yelled at himself, but perhaps that would come later. After all his confession had all but been damning. Still he went in and followed his wife’s lead. 

Their was a hollow feeling in his body and a hurricane in his mind. He was at once so far away and nowhere to be found. He hadn’t cried in the maze - getting himself and his brother out. He hadn’t cried when Arachne left, but her ability to smile made something close to tears well up in his eyes. Realizing he hadn’t spoken he said softly as if he was trying to speak through a throat that no longer wanted to work. “Ah yeah, that sounds - nice. I - I should probably explain. What happened. I don’t give a shit about w-what the others think but I want to explain it to you.”  There was a feeling of dread when he said that. They could hate him, hell he was pretty sure except for maybe Heph they didn’t like him. He could feel their stares on him anyway. But he couldn’t have her hate him. He couldn’t have her to pretend to be happy near him while wishing he would disappear. The pain of being silent was worse then anything that could be said. “With what you saw. I have to explain.”

     During the centuries Hekate had learned to turn a blind eye on things that were out of her control, and on things that she thought didn’t do her harm. The goddess wasn’t the type to stick her button nose on topics that didn’t concern her. She was no Hera, she made damn sure of it.

     So when Hermes was quick to explain what happened at the maze, the witch’s first reaction was to raise a hand firmly. “You don’t have to explain anything to me. You don’t owe me anything.” Arriving at the kitchen the brunette turned around and softly ran a hand down his cheek in tenderness, offering comfort. 

     She turned around simply to start making the promised tea, thinking well on the ingredients. A drink that would hopefully calm him. Once all the ingredients were prepared, she dumped them on the boiling water and waited for him to fall silent. “Hermes, my dear husband-” The wanderess started saying playfully, hoping the lighten the mood.

     “-I won’t question anything, not from you. I trust you enough not to.”

Hermes hadn’t meant to make her wistful - in a world that he never quite understood. Still he gave her a sad smile, little and worn more like an understanding then anything else. “You’ll be up there again. At least if I have anything to say about it.”  “I’ll try my best, but sometimes I can’t find you. You seem to run around faster then I can catch you.” Hermes said with a smile and a roll of his eye. “Oh? And why would a respectable titan like yourself marry me if you knew? Honestly I bet about half of Olympus still thinks I tricked you. An Unfaithful mongrel like me? Tsk tsk Hekate.” Their was a twinkle in his eye when he was mock scolding her. “Out of all the the beautiful people in the world and you got stuck with the pickpocket god. Something isn’t right with that.” 

He shook his head slightly giving a chuckle. “Fine fine. You cool hippie. And I’m serious. No need to get sick when you got me.” He gave her a smile at the dog.  “I’m glad. It was seriously weird to hear a chicken bark. Do you know where he went? And I’m not a worrier. That’s obviously not my job. I just don’t want you getting needlessly hurt. ”

     “Me?” Hekate asked innocently, her eyes wide as a doe’s. “I, outrunning the god of travel, who would have thunk?” The goddess joked softly, her tone light and playful, her words not to be taken neither personal nor serious. But the thought baffled her, she never realized how much she fluttered around daily. “If you ever doubt where I am, just follow the petal trail. Or the dog paw prints, whichever one of the two.” She added with laughter in her voice. “Because I don’t believe in rumors and in what people think. I know who you are, and I love you for it.” Hekate interwind their arms together as they continued to walk. “Let them talk. You say that as if you’re not beautiful. And pickpocketing is a good skill to have!”

     “I know, I know. I got you and I got Seth. But I just wanted to get some clues or some kind of information on what we’re dealing with. I just feel so helpless without my usual powers.” She replied back with resignation making her shoulders hunch forward. If she could have discovered something from the copper powder, they could have been a step closer to finding out something about the wardens. The brunette mulled over the question for a few seconds before shaking her head, “I actually do not. But a simple location spell could do the trick.” The incantation was small enough, she could do it without consequences. “I’ll try not to, but I won’t make any promises.” Which seemed to be the exact words he said earlier, which caused her to chuckle.

“Who says? You don’t look a day over  forever, darling dear.” Hermes said a smile in his voice. “Yes your walk. It’s elegant. You look like your walking on moonlight.” He shrugged slightly as he looked back at the path. 

“Don’t Queens walk like that? If not they really should.” 

He’s eyes softened for a moment as he reached over and took one of her hands that were fidgeting not satisfied just that she was looking at him. 

“Hekate don’t you dare worry about me. I never dug a hole I couldn’t get out of.” He didn’t promise her not to get into trouble or hurt - those would be  a lie and he didn’t lie to her. Still there was an air around him that felt like armor. He wouldn’t fall - and he certainly wouldn’t drag her down with him. He let her hand go hoping that it at least comforted her. 

“Hey your more then a hippie - hippies wish they were you. Just be careful okay? If you need anything for it you come to me okay? No need selling any of your power off when you gotta have it for the shop.” 

    Cheeks heated at the compliment, yet her smile faltered for a millisecond. “I used to.” Hekate said softly, almost in a whisper, “walk on moonlight I mean, and on constellations. You remember?” The brunette gave a wishful sigh as hazel gaze turned upwards in wistfulness. “I miss it dearly.” 

    Her eyes swiveled down once again as Hermes grasped her hand. His soothing words did nothing to ease her endless worry, but Hekate knew better than doubt his ability. Unlike her, he really was a master at getting out of trouble. “Just as long as you visit me once a day- that would be enough.” Then she added playfully to lighten up the mood. “Besides, I’m not afraid, I know who I married.” 

    She laughed at his words and shrugged her small shoulders that were bare due to her off-the-shoulder dress. “I don’t mind being a hippie actually, it makes me cool. I like to be cool.” Hekate’s heart warmed at his concern for her well being. “Now look who’s worrying. I’ll be fine, Hermes. I won’t touch that nasty powder ever again.” The one that gave her those frightful hallucinations. “And I’m doing good so far. I finally changed back the dog! Did I tell you? You remember? The one I accidentally turned into a chicken? He’s a precious dog again, so you don’t need to be worrying about me, sweetheart, I’ve got it handled.”

He could feel his jaw tense, from lower all up to the top one and beyond, reaching down his throat and up to his temples, under the thick bone of his nose. Seth didn’t feel humiliated or hurt; he didn’t feel shame or fear that someone would now know of his relationship with Hekate. He felt anger bubbling up, but he had to keep it at bay, for it might have been an explosion if released. “Marvelous,” still, he spat. “Are you alright? Did they get to you?”

    She watched his face contort in suppressed anger and felt worried. Not of her safety, but at his tendencies to keep things locked inside. Hekate knew from experience it never ended well when you tried to keep a tight lid on bubbling water. The brunette shook her head timidly, feeling slightly concerned that they didn’t target her. What she going to be next? “I’m fine, they didn’t get to me. Come on, let’s get you out of here. Let’s go home.”

He didn’t look great - his hair still sprayed with sea salt and his eyes looking as if he hadn’t slept. Which he hadn’t slept. He had looked out on to the waves for what had seemed days but what had probably only been hours. Watching as it all sank - the secrets they kept lost. 

He almost had mourned them, but as the sun went higher into the sky he realized he couldn’t stay there and he sure as hell wasn’t going back to his house. Instead he took off his suit jacket and walked slowly over to the one person who wouldn’t disown him on the spot. 

Well - he at least hoped she wouldn’t. That might be to much for him today. With a knock that felt heavier then normal he waited for her to open the door. 

“Honey are you awake? I was going to say I’m home but I don’t live here.” 

    The past weeks had completely thrown Hekate on an emotional ride. They had been so intense, she felt as if she was still hallucinating from the copper powder. But unfortunately, it was all reality. Not only did she have to endure watching Seth battle his demons, but see Hermes in a way she hadn’t before. Heartbroken. 

    For the last couple of nights she hadn’t been able to sleep, scared of what was to come. Hekate felt incredibly useless, before the imprisonment she had this immense power; power that could grant everything. But she was merely holding on to a whimper of it, unable to help those she cared about. It wrecked her. 

    A wash of familiarity washed over her as the goddess got up to answer whoever was walking towards her door. Even her ability in seeing the future was weakened. She opened the door with a friendly smile that widened as she realized who it was. “Hermes, you know this will always be your home, even if you don’t live here. Do you want tea? I’ll make some tea!” The brunette swirled around heading for the kitchen, walking on random flower petals as it was costumed in her household.

Hekate twirled, locks of hair swirling in circles around her, and Loki watched her go with a smile on their face; one free of machinations and plots, for once. At her words, they quirked an eyebrow, their laughter low.

“Majesty? That’s a first.”

The crown of flowers sat almost askew atop their head, though that was Loki’s fault for moving; not Hekate’s. “I do feel like royalty,” they said, smile widening ever-so-slightly. They rather liked her company – there were no millennia of bad blood, and her nature was unlike their own.. easy to get along with. She made them think of days long gone, in truth, days they’d never thought they could have back.

“–– and you? It’s a fine crown, if I dare say so myself.” It was a carefree grin, Loki getting up on their feet beside her.

    “The first of many.” She sang at them as she swayed to the breeze that floated around them. Hekate beamed at seeing their grin and their lightheartedness, she bit the corner of her lip slightly before admitting. “You’ve got a face for a smile you know, you should smile more often.” The brunette then reached high on her tippy toes to tap their nose lightly in a playful manner. 

    At their words, she nodded animatedly. “It’s beautiful, magnificent, extraordinary! Words are not enough to describe the masterpiece you have bestowed on my head!” Hekate exclaimed with laugh. “What do we now? Do we show off our new trendy accessories?” She started to wander around them, delicate feet reaching high and lowering down, as if she was a ballet dancer. “Or should we dance? Or we can walk around? Or- oh! We can play games!”

Nemesis smiled at the goddess; her excitement was endearing, and perhaps a little contagious. “No, don’t apologise!” Nemesis smiled encouragingly. “I never had time to play games… before…” Her time before the island had been divided neatly between helping various deities lick their wounds and balancing out Tyche’s whims.

“I’ll be happy with whatever game you chose, as long as you don’t mind teaching me.” And with that, Nemesis motioned for Hekate to lead the way to her home.

    “Of course!” Hekate exclaimed happily, she didn’t mind teaching the other just as long as someone played with her. She gleefully took the other’s hand and made her way to little quaint cabin. Where they both, hopefully, would enjoy a quiet evening of cheerful games.

Loki shifted forward, arms stretching out to crown the small goddess with her wreath of blooming flowers. “There,” they murmured, leaning back to take in their handiwork. It was an elegant thing, the crown they’d braided, and it suited her well – if they could say so themself. 

“Now.. I believe it is your turn?”

    The titaness giggled as she gently felt the flower crown neatly tucked in her hair. “I love it! It’s really beautiful! I feel like a princess!” Hekate babbled mindlessly as she felt the need to suddenly get up and twirl in circles. At their next words, she gasped and grabbed their own. “Of course! Here you are, Your Majesty.” The brunette said playfully as she placed the crown on their silk raven hair. 

    “Perfect!”

Still, against her words, he rose into a sitting position, rubbing his temples, his eyes for them to adapt to the light slowly fading away and leaving the room surrounded in coming darkness. Seth looked at her in silence for longer than he wanted — how did she know what happened? How did she know it was a nightmare he was suffering from..? These questions spun around his mind and he finally took one of her warm hands, so tiny and fragile, and pressed it gently. “Te, look at me,” he asked, “How did you know?”

    Hekate locked her hazel gaze with his but couldn’t keep it long. She then focused it on their joined hands as she tried to figure out her way around it. What happened if she told him the truth? She couldn’t just lie to him because sooner or later, Seth would find out the truth. And him knowing that she lied to him made her stomach twist in knots. “Well, they broadcasted everyone’s experience, but I don’t see how that’s important now. What matters is to get you to safety and for you to heal up.”
