day 4 of horror mythology: shui gui

in chinese mythology, water ghosts are the souls of those who committed suicide by drowning themselves, as well as those who accidentally drowned to death. these souls are trapped in the body of water they died in and will haunt that water forever, unable to make their journey through di yu and re-enter the reincarnation cycle, until they successfully drag a living person into the water and kill them. the person they killed then takes their place as a ti si gui, and the original water ghost can be reincarnated.

japanese mythology: amanozako

amanozako is a monstrous goddess. she originated when susanoo let his own ferocious spirit build up inside him until he vomited her out. she is described as having a furious temper, a beastly head with a long nose, long ears, and great fangs so strong they can chew metal blades ragged, and to be capable of flying for a thousand li. amanozako has been known to be a goddess that goes against conformity and does the opposite of what is expected by society and social norms. also, it is said that amanozako is picky, and will go into an atrocious rage if she does not get what she wants, or if things do not go according to her way. her wrath cannot be stopped

el peuchen is a creature from the mapuche mythology and chilote mythology pertaining to southern chile, a much feared shapeshifting creature that can instantly change into animal form. according to legend, el peuchen takes the hearts of its victims without leaving a mark on the body. its gaze could paralyze an intended victim and permit it to suck its blood. it has often been reported as the cause of blood being sucked from one's sheep.

it is said that phi lang kluang has a very large wound on his back. inside the hollow back there are intestines full of worms. according to legends, phi lang kluang enjoys jokes and pranks. for example, they ask someone to scratch their back. when someone does this, the phi lang kluang turns out to be such a creature with a hollow back and full of creeping centipedes. phi lang kluang are said to live in forest communities.
