Hibernation and autumn colors seem to be returning topics in a few of my illustrations from the past weeks.
Hawfinch, traditional media (it’s been a while!)
My illustration of the Acrophyseter deinodon was printed life-size! The whale was only 4m long so it was not that big.(for a whale at least!) I also made a small 3D model of the animal in SuperSculpey. The white frames feature internal cuts of the whale.( like a CT scan) All these works were made to give the viewer a museum-like experience of the ancient whale.
Even more whales!
Another take on the Acrophyseter deinodon. I can work on this forever!
Recurvirostra avosetta or avocet chick! took about 45 minutes in photoshop.
Finally finished my website. Feel free to take a look!
I finished my coloring my common kingfisher today! (after approximately ten hours in photoshop) Phew!
Sometimes I like to try something else, like using a different style for my whale illustrations.
Possible coloration options for the extinct Acrophyster Deinodon from the Miocene era. The two last options are the most likely, as they look more like some of the whale colorations of today. These illustrations where made in collaboration with Olivier Lambert of the royal museum of natural history in Brussels.
Working on a common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) illustration at the moment.
colour version coming soon!
Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is looking for interns for this year! They are looking for graphic designers and scientific illustrators in particular. If you would like an interesting and nature involved internship, don't hesitate!
Currently I am working on a reconstructional drawing of a sperm whale of the miocene, the Acrophyseter deinodon. Only the fossilized skull of the animal was found so for the rest of the body I'll have to take a look at modern sperm whales. This piece is not done yet, because I'm working with O. Lambert from the museum of natural history of Brussels, and I have to get more feedback from him first.
(but it is really handy to have your own paleontologist at the ready to help you with the illustration!)
I'll post more about the Acrophyseter soon!
My last project was designing a little app about animals of the ice age! Here are some of the icons and art I made for it. I think this turned out ok, considering I normally make more scientific illustrations and this looks more like graphic design. But it was fun to make and I even made a little artbook to go with the app.
It also shows that as an illustrator, you sometimes have to leave your comfort zone and try something else.
A green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas. This is my last illustration I made for my internship in Greece. These past three months have been amazing and I will miss the beautiful nature of Greece and the amazing scientists I worked with.
It is good to know there are actually a lot of people who care about nature and its conservation. I hope my illustrations will be used for the same great cause as well.
Greetings from Belgium! (back home again!)
A leatherback and a logger turtle, done for my illustration internship in Greece.
