“Oh, I will.” He grinned and shoved her lightly back.”Good. One ally. I’m going to need that in writing.” He joked. He frowned at her words and sighed. “Well, at least I’ll know what I did wrong… Could you maybe just cut one ball off instead of both?” He compromised.

“Oh, no, you’ll just have to take my word for it. No way am I going to sign a contract that’s going to legally bind me to you,” she chuckled. “Nope. Both balls. So you’ll know never to do it again. Do you really need your balls, Mace?” Helen asked, in mock seriousness. “Give me a good reason, I might just reconsider.”

helen: i'm not going to leave you with a burned dorm and no other good place to sleep.

darcy hated first world problems, because he knew there were people out there going through far worse, but he didn’t want to undermine the struggles other people had. different environments led to different sorts of problems. “princess jasmine knew what was up. i’m sure there’s someone who knows how to go about unnoticed. without magic.” he knew ithaca was good at sneaking around. perhaps she would know. “please don’t, oh my god. we are never bringing up my mini-emo-phase.” it hadn’t been for very long, and his outward appearance hadn’t changed, but he’d listened to depressing music and complained about how annoying life was all day. “…maybe, but i’m still not telling you.”

“technically we could. wear a wig, different style of clothing. people usually notice the trademark aspects of people. for example, my long hair. for example, your perpetual frown,” she said with a smile, to let him know she was joking. helen laughed openly. “maybe your mini-emo-phase is just what we need. who’s going to recognise the prince of auroria with goth makeup and a stud choker?” helen arched an eyebrow, giving darcy one of those ‘you’re seriously trying this right now?’ looks she usually reserved for crimson or eirella. “...okay. i’ll find out soon enough. come on, let’s get some grub.” she said, beckoning for him to follow her out the door.

daphne: then i guess i could sleep in the sleeping bag

daphne: would your clothes even fit me??

helen: the sleeping bag is already waiting for you

helen: they would, they're clothes

“yeah… i get that. what you do reflects on your people, not to mention your family, stuff like that. but we have problems like the rest of the citizens do. sometimes it feels like that’s not allowed,” he said with a sigh. he didn’t want to be perfect all the time. maybe his socially awkward self was overreacting, but there were times where he just wanted to live a normal kid’s life for once. “goth and emo crowd, really? do people even use the term ‘emo’ to label themselves anymore? that’s so 2009.” he shuffled his foot. “because it doesn’t matter. we’re going to break it off somehow, then that will be the end of that.”

helen’s fingers stumbled as it tried to finish braiding her hair but darcy’s words just made her tired and she gave up. “first world problems, royalty problems...” she muttered, groaning. “i always thought jasmine dressing up as a commoner was just outrageous and unnecessary but honestly? i wish we could still do that. that’s virtually impossible nowadays. and, don’t worry, i’ll bring 2009 back just for you. emo prince darcy.” her hard frown changed to a more dramatic pout. “...wouldn’t that be more successful with a few choice friends by your side?” she said, in a sing-song. “i’m already buying you food, you could just drop a name...”

“the people don’t own us. we work for them, but they don’t own us.” to him, it was the same as saying his citizens belonged to him. he hated thinking of it like ownership, preferring some sort of partnership or agreement or something. “the fun one? yes, because i’m just a bundle of laughs,” he said. if he was fun, then charity was the best comedian in the whole of auradon. probably even further. “…i’m not telling.”

“...okay, maybe ‘own’ isn’t the right word for it....” helen un-did her ponytail, gathering it up into a braid over her shoulder. “but i always understood my role as just being for the people. responsible for the people, accountable to the people...” she recited. “please, you’re a regular comedian. i hear you’re popular with the goth and emo crowd,” she grinned. the grin dropped to a disappointed frown. “what, why not?”

daphne: and i'll be stinky and smelly anyway i don't have any clothes

daphne: i haven't

helen: yeah i do but i also have a sleeping bag

helen: and some nights i don't even sleep here so

helen: there are showers??? i have a lot of clothes too

helen: ok we'll deal with that later

“ you know– ” angel rolled onto her side, propping herself up with one elbow and placing her head on her hand. “ not to, like, discount everything else about you, cause you’re great, really. but these– ” she placed on hand on helen’s stomach, and feigned an emotional look. as if the feeling of her stomach was enough to bring tears to angel’s eyes. “ fudge, these are so. nice. “

helen groaned, draping an arm over her eyes so she could try to sleep a little longer. when there was suddenly a hand on her stomach, however, she blinked her eyes open, laughing as she weakly tried to swat away angel’s hand. she burst into another string of laughter when she saw angel’s dramatic expression. “ ah, yes. please, feel free to cry about my abs. ”

elodie shook her head, offering a small smile. “no, no worries! i probably shouldn’t have been lying out here like this.” she scrunched up her nose. “i really didn’t mean to startle you  …” her smile turned apologetic.

“-- no, we’re not startled.” aurelius neighed in support. “ -- yeah, no, we were just -- surprised.” helen a hand through her hair, brushing it back. “you can lie down wherever you like and, honestly, we were more interested in the box. before we saw you, we thought it might have been lost property.”

cora squeezed helen’s hand slightly. “i hope so, but i won’t be upset if he doesn’t. he was the only one willing to go look, and for that, i appreciate him so much,” she gave a soft, almost sad-sounding laugh. “but, yeah, i’ll make sure he knows that it’s okay.” she nodded, giving the slightest of smiles. after a moment, though, she sighed again, and reached her hand out as skylar gave and nuzzled against it — he’d been silent the whole time, and considering how loud he usually was, she appreciated it. her smile grew slightly at helen’s next words. “suspicious? pfft. me? never.” she teased, lightheartedly.

she watched skylar comfort coranza and she looked back at aurelius to see where he’d gone to. the horse was two paces slower than the jaquin, and he passed helen a look that she didn’t understand. “what if i just replace you with a jaquin, hmm?” she teased, holding out her hand. aurelius pretended to bite at it but it just made helen laugh. “you hear that, boy? cora doesn’t think we’re part of corona’s finest,” she pouted at coranza. “we’ll prove you wrong, just you wait,” she smirked.

“and i agree.” for the most part. there was a small part of him that believed his parents could spring something as crazy as that on him, only because of how they’d been acting recently. “why does my love life have to be public, anyway? besides, it’s not like i’m going to inherit. i’m the younger twin.” as much as he hated the imbalance of his and charity’s responsibilities, he was secretly glad that he was younger, even if it was only by a few minutes. “…yeah, i do.” but he didn’t give helen a name.

“because we’re royalty and half our lives are owned by the people. usually that’s a good thing but...” helen trailed off, shaking her head. she liked working for the people, but she usually only thought this for corona. not the whole of auradon. “that makes you the fun one. it’ll be harder to find dirt on the regent because of consequences and defamation and whatever.” she waited for the name but when it didn’t come, helen pulled a face. “okay, and they are...?”

“Well, technically, it’s not the kingdom I would be attacking. Just their asshole of a prince.” He chuckled. “For now, I won’t attack him, but if it came down to it, would you stand be my side?” He frowned. “Oh, come on. That’s so unfair… Will you at least tell me what it is I did wrong?”

“True. Just make sure you make that distinction,” she added with a knowing smile. “Hopefully it won’t come down to it, but...if the stars are aligned, then sure I’ll stand by your side,” she grinned, punching him lightly on the arm. “I’ll tell you after. When it comes to ball shots, the punishment comes before anything else. That’s how you make it really hurt. And it also acts as deterrence.”
