Laoghaire is a renown and famous mathematician. She's not just excellent. She's bloody brilliant.
She faced a lot of misogyny and sexism. It came from other male students or teachers and started when she was around 12, when she became aware of her abilities. She fought and won and became that sharp, openly confident woman.
When she's not doing research, she's giving lectures and speaking at very important conferences.
She has that reputation of being a cold-hearted woman, a manipulative snake.
In fact, she's just protecting herself from harm but never refuses kindness or friendships. It's just so rare for her that she's suspicious anytime someone's nice to her.
Armand is also very smart in his own field. He's fluent in French and more, if possible. He's capable of reading old French and even quoting obscure pieces of literature from old books.
He's less famous, not to say he's very discreet and values privacy.
His students love him. He's kind, calm, cares about them and what he teaches and it shows.
When he sees her, he finds her awesome.

That's why people were surprised, even shocked, to hear that they've been dating. He asked her out after one of her conferences.
She was dismissing some aspiring lover and he went to speak to her. He's calm, collected, assured. And simply asks after introducing himself.
Since then, they never left each other.
