It doesn’t happen like that. You don’t just wake up one day and find that everything has worked itself out. You must get out of bed, morning after morning, and make a conscious effort to control the circumstances of that given day. You must learn to handle your issues with grace because you respect what they are attempting to teach you. You must drown your insecurities slowly, one self-realization at a time. You must allow yourself to feel the fear bubbling just beneath your skin but you must never allow it the satisfaction of crippling you; grit your teeth and march on. You see, they never tell you how hard these things will be. This fight to reclaim yourself is not easy or straightforward but, my god, is it necessary.

Thoughts about Maudsley method

[disclaimer: I have never been through Maudsley, so this is based purely on theoretical thinking and the numerous articles and books I have read on the subject.  Yesterday I talked to two people who were curious about my opinion on Maudsley, so I figured I’d make a post.]

My general opinion about Maudsley is that it is fundamentally flawed because it approaches eating disorders as behavioral and physical disorders rather than as mental disorders, and mental disorders cannot be healed only through simple physical/behavioral changes.  Though I really do commend Maudsley parents on having the dedication to go through something like that, I think that the method, and the philosophy behind it, is flawed.

Why does every single conversation I have with someone feel like a performance. I am performing the act of communicating which to most, comes naturally but for me, it’s like I need 100% of my cognitive capacity and to constantly calculate the best response, best tone, best gestures for the given moment and then do it over and over again perfectly until the conversation ends in order to have had a normal one and it’s so exhausting I feel like a fucking robot

Being “fit” looks different on everybody.

Some body types will never ever be “skinny” or “thin” unless they’re malnourished. That is the fucking hill I’m willing to die on.

You gotta understand that some people never really grow. They never learn their lesson. They never recognise their mistakes, they never acknowledge their faults, they never admit they were in the wrong. You will never receive an apology from them, and you will never see their behaviour change.

Growing up autistic often involves not being believed. Your experiences of being tired, stressed, and overwhelmed are constantly minimized. “How could you be tired? You haven’t done anything all day.” “How could you be stressed? You’re eight.” “Look at the other children, how much fun they’re having. If we go home now you’ll miss out on all the fun!” If you find certain tasks particularly challenging, you are told it really isn’t that hard, you just have to [brief and unhelpful description of task].

There are no upsides to denying or minimizing someone’s pain, except that it frees the person doing the minimizing from having to deal with it. Even if the child is “only doing it for attention”, worst case scenario they give their child attention. What’s so terrible about that? Because the alternative is that they are teaching their child not to value and trust their own experience, and that is immensely damaging. It can mean the child might not recognize when they’re being emotionally abused. It can lead to mental health issues, burnout, and many other problems.

Not everyone responds to a given situation in the same way. If someone tells you something bothers them, just because you’re not bothered by it doesn’t mean they’re lying or exaggerating.
