Vegan Responses: But they’re bred/raised to be killed!

Once a carnist has been asked to explain why they love their pets, but are totally fine with paying for the commodification and exploitation of farm animals, they often reply with something along the lines of “Yes but pigs are raised for food!” as if they have now stumbled upon a holy grail of logic which now permits them to do with animals as they please, so long as they have been previously classified as “food”.

-This assumes that an action which would otherwise be immoral, can be justified if the intent to commit such an action was there before the animal even existed. This is completely ridiculous…

By this logic, I could buy a male and female dog, breed them, and make sure to assert before the puppies are born that these will be “kicking” puppies (puppies that I will kick repeatedly for my own enjoyment when I need to pass the time). Once the puppies were born, I could take the litter outside and have a jolly old time seeing how far I could punt each little creature across my yard. 

If one of my neighbors saw me doing this and seemed at all shocked or perturbed, I would just proudly tell them: “Oh don’t worry! These puppies were bred to be kicked!” to which my neighbor would respond: “Oh thank goodness! You had me worried for a second.” And they would breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that my actions were now justified because kicking is what I had intended for these puppies all along.

Clearly we can all see that this is a ludicrous scenario. It is wrong to kick puppies because it is wrong to inflict unnecessary suffering on an animal. Whether or not an intention to cause suffering was there before the animal was born is irrelevant. This should also apply to farm animals. It does not matter that they were bred to be slaughtered…it is still wrong to harm them for our own enjoyment.
