“That’s a good girl. – Oh, pardon me. Do you by chance know who owns this girl?”
“Yes sorry, she’s mine. Her leash slipped out of my hand.”
Matthew looked at her upset, shaking his head as she talked and frowning. “Do you actually think I care about what my mom has to say about this? And actually she wouldn’t say anything. She has nothing to say she had me at twenty years old with a guy her whole family thought very lowly about. Yeah my family would say those stuff, but do you think that I’m that way? Because then you definitely don’t know me. You can’t always do what you want, you have to think about others too, which apparently you didn’t realized. You were doing well with your recovery? Do you mean now…? Of course I hate you, how can I not be mad at you. Do you realize what you did?” Matthew was trying to process everything as she put Hayden back in his stroller, lowering his voice so that he wouldn’t wake up the young child. “Who do you think I am Evie? I don’t care if you want something or not from me. You are not getting away that easily. Nobody goes on like that, now I’m a fucking father I’m not running away like you did. But you’re not running away again. I’m not going to tell my family okay, if I do my grandparents will get lawyers involved, and that’s the last thing you’d want.”
It took a lot to upset Evie, and she prided herself on having made it so far through a conversation with Matthew without getting mad. But the moment he mentioned that he hated her, Evie’s blood began to boil. “You’re so childish. I can’t believe I even stopped after running into you to sit here and have a fucking conversation with you.” She lifted her perfectly sculpted eyebrows when he mentioned lawyers, not paying attention to the fact that he wasn’t threatening to hire them. “Wow. You’re still the same old Matthew. I don’t want you anywhere around my son.” She spat out, keeping her voice low so she wouldn’t cause a scene which was growing harder by the minute. “Yeah, I ran away. But it was for his sake. You’re not ready to be a parent. Being a parent means actually being there for your kid at night, not the hundreds of women with whom I’m sure you’re sleeping with. There’s diapers, and bottles, and stuffy noses. It’s not all fun and games. Hate me all you want, Matthew. I couldn’t care less. I’m protecting Hayden.”
“Believe it or not Evie, right now, after seeing this, I hardly want to trust you.” He said, crossing his arms as he looked at her, waiting for her to say something else, but there weren’t anything that could have made him not mad at her. His eyes moving from her to Hayden. The brown curly hair, the light eyes… There was nothing to doubt, he looked like him, he looked like most of his family actually. It was such a difficult news to just take in, normally you have nine months to get use to the idea. Matthew had gone from being very single, free, without any attach really, to being a father and all the responsibilities which went with it. Now that he knew, he would have to get involved, even if Evie would tell him he didn’t have to. Matt wasn’t that kind of cowards. “You were not the relationship type either should I remind you…And it’s not about us, it’s about him. I don’t get it Evie, you were scared of me? What do you think I could have done?” He sighed, one of his hair going though his messy curly brown hair. “No it doesn’t count for anything, because if you hadn’t bump into me, you probably never would have told me.”
Her brunette locks fell into her hair as she furiously shook her head, not wanting Matt to get the wrong idea. “I wasn’t scared of you, just scared of how you would react. Do you really think that Alice would have been okay with me having your baby? Hell, she probably would have said that I was doing it to trap you, or get money from you. I didn’t want to have to deal with that. Everything hit me all at once. My life was finally on a good path. I was doing well with my recovery, I had steady gigs…and then this pregnancy happened. I know you probably hate me…but it’s the truth.” She could hear light snores coming from Hayden, something that she had heard coming from Matthew many nights during their time spent together. As much as she hated to admit it, everything that Hayden did reminded her of Matthew. Chewing on her bottom lip, she took a minute to gently lay him back down in stroller, careful not to wake him. Evie stuck his pacifier in his mouth and then ran a hand through her hair, turning to face Matthew. “Look, I don’t want anything from you. You don’t have to be in his life. I’ve made it this far on my own. You can go on about your life and career, okay? Just don’t worry about it.”
Matthew wasn’t sure what to say or what to do. It was the last thing he had expected from this day. From any day actually. He was mature enough, but his work was his kid, he had just gotten his first big movie to work on and this could be the beginning of his career, next could be a directing opportunity, having kids was definitely not for now. But it was too late to say that. He couldn’t help but look at the baby, avoiding looking at Evie. Matt was confused, completely lost in this situation, but one thing was sure he was mad at her. How could she do this to him? If anything she could at least have told him that he was a father. “So you just disappear because you wanted to hide it from me? Are you for real now Evie? You have to be kidding me, how can you just do that? What was your plan? Never tell me? Tell him that his father didn’t want to be a part of his life while I didn’t have a clue he existed? For him to come and find me when he’ll be I don’t know, in his twenties and I’ll have an actual life? What was your plan here Evie? I’m curious to know because I’ve never seen something so messed up.” Matt looked at the baby in her arms. “Don’t try and bullshit me now.”
This was definitely the last conversation that Evie wanted to have with Matthew, but deep down she knew that he was right. Matthew deserved to know about Hayden. “I’m not going to bullshit you, Matthew.” Evie let out a deep sigh, continuing to cradle Hayden against her chest. She was quiet for a moment as she thought of the right words to say. But really, there were no right words. “I didn’t have a plan, Matt. I was completely terrified. What we had--, it wasn’t a relationship. You weren’t the relationship type. I was having your kid, for god’s sake. If you couldn’t commit to me…how could you commit to him?” Evie looked down at the slumbering baby. “He’s my pride and joy, Matt. Yes, what I did was wrong. But I wouldn’t trade him for the world. Being his mom is the greatest gift that I could have been given. I kept it from you, but you know now. Doesn’t that count for something?”
Matthew wasn’t an idiot, actually he was smart, but he just didn’t want to come to conclusions which could be completely wrong. But he had this weird feeling that he knew this wasn’t her friend’s child. And this was only confirmed when she told him the name of the baby. “Hayden Sampson I’m going to assume?” He said, looking at her. “It was a long visit wasn’t it?” He said with a sigh, shaking his head as she apologized. “It was a year ago, it’s…whatever.” He looked again at the kid and looked back at her “How old is he?”
Evie was silent, knowing that she had been caught in her lie. She wasn’t even sure what to say to him. “Yeah, yeah. Hayden Sampson.” Evie brought her hand to her mouth, gently biting down on her thumbnail. It was a nervous habit that she had, and one that her team hated. “He’s seven months. That’s why the visit was so long. I was pregnant with him.” Hayden’s fussing and moving around shifted her attention, with the brunette walking around to the front of the stroller to unbuckle him. “Shhh, shhh. It’s okay. Mommy’s here.” She muttered softly, lifting the baby from the seat and cradling him against her chest, bouncing him gently as she turned to face Matthew. “I wanted to tell you…really, I did. But I couldn’t. I tried so many times. But it was during one of our off periods when I found out and…” Her voice trailed off as she sighed.
Matthew looked at Evie, not so convinced as she was talking. He squatted to look at the baby. He wasn’t the best with kids, but his cousins were much younger than he was. So he was used to be around them. Holding out his hand for the few months old to grab, he smiled slightly at him before standing up again. “Oh really? I had no idea one of your friend was pregnant…What’s his name?” He asked as he looked down at the baby boy again as she put down the shade cover. “I’ve been fine, got a big project to work on now, so there is that. What about you? The question I shall ask has to be, where have you been?”
Evie froze for a brief moment as Matt interacted with Hayden, knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he would catch on if he were to really look at the baby. Hayden was a mini me of his father, for crying out loud. It didn’t even don on Evie that she had mentioned naming her child after her brother who had passed away when she was seventeen, with her blurting out his name instantly. “His name is Hayden.” She said proudly, forgetting that she was supposed to be lying. “I uh--..I went to visit my mom and sister. I just had to get away from the temptation of Hollywood.” She said quietly, which was partly true. “I’m sorry, Matt. I should have told you I was leaving.”
Matthew did not even need to look at her to know who it was. He knew this voice too well. It had been over a year since he had last seen or heard of Evie. How could a person disappear from once’s life that way? He had no idea but it had happened. His expression changed as he looked at her, a slight frown hiding his usual smile. “You babysit now?” Matt commented as he noticed the stroller before looking down at the few months old in it. A thought crossing his mind. But it just couldn’t be right. There was no way. Actually there were ways, but Evie would never have not told him. At least he hoped.
Evie’s eyes widened, knowing that she would obviously have to lie about her child. “Wait. What? Oh-- um, yeah. He’s my friend’s.” It hurt her immensely to say that, but it was something she had to do, for Hayden’s sake. “She wanted a night out and who was I to deny his adorable face? Apparently walks knock him right out.” The sun had set now, and Evie bent down to pull the shade cover back a bit. She shifted her weight between her feet, nervously tucking her hair behind an ear as she looked at Matthew. “How have you been, Matt? You look good.”
Matthew was on his way home after a meeting, head into his notebook as he wrote a few things that had just went though his mind and which he did not want to forget. He wasn’t looking in front of him as he walked into an other person, “Oh…Sorry.” He apologized, finally looking at the person in front of him.
Evie was pushing Hayden in his stroller, going for a casual walk in the balmy California evening. It was a great way to get him to fall asleep and for her to get in a bit of exercise. She was digging around in her purse for his pacifier when she felt the stroller collide with someone, immediately lifting her head to apologize. She had opened her mouth to speak but no words came out when she saw who it was. Of all the places in L.A., she had to run into Matthew when she had Hayden with her. “Sorry..that was my fault.” She mumbled, pulling the cover over Hayden, as if that would hide him from Matthew.
“That’s the thing about prep, is that it’s a joy to have it there and you can spend all this time prepping, but ultimately you have to look at your script and turn up on the day. It’s embedded in there somewhere but you have to forget it all and play the scene because we are storytelling.” (Jenna Colema)
“I mean that or you could always you KNOW, free the nipple and go topless.” The girl says with a smirk before furrowing her brows, not knowing a thing about Gucci, “I’m pretty sure Gucci will forgive you but HEY.” Charlie claps her hands toward the child, kissing him on the head, “How’s the coolest dude in all of LA doing?”
Evie couldn’t help but to chuckle at Charlie’s suggestion. “I don’t think I have the confidence to go completely topless. Although more power to the women who can.” The brunette looked down at her son, who was in turn staring at Charlie. “I think he wants to see you, actually.”
Eva listened along, eyes widening in horror at the mere idea of a Gucci top being ruined. “The poor baby—” she remarked dramatically in reference to the top. “Have you put the child up for adoption yet?”
Evie was confused for a moment, looking down at Hayden and then back up to the female in front of her. “Wait...give up my baby for ruining a top?”
“Shouldn’t be complaining about Gucci silk tops if you have a billion to spare.”
“I don’t remember asking for your opinion.” Evie huffed as she moved Hayden to her other hip.
“Shouldn’t be wearing brand names around children.”
“Then I wouldn’t be wearing anything at all, but thanks for the killer advice.”

“One thing I’ve learned from motherhood...always carry extra tops with you.” Evie mumbled in exasperation as she looked down at the baby food that her son Hayden had flung at her shirt. “I hardly doubt that mashed bananas will come out of a Gucci silk top.”
