I was at Disneyland yesterday and when I walked into the Princess Fantasy Faire I welled up with tears as I witnessed a magical moment with the newest princess Elena of Avalor speaking in full Spanish to a small princess visiting from Latin America.
Representation matters.
Oooh sheâs so pretty đ
Me: crying at this beautiful magical momentâŚ
Also me: I donât understand what is being said except zapatos. They are talking about shoes and Iâm crying again.
I guess I shouldâve translated for the non-Spanish speakers. Elena: âYour shoes are so sparkly! You know my grandmother always says a princess needs something sparkly so everyone knows that you are a princess and look; you have your crown, your dress and your shoes. Everything is so beautiful!â
Iâm squealing I love this!!!đđđđđž

You CAN:
âď¸ Fix your sleep schedule
âď¸ Improve your eating habits
âď¸ Learn a new language
âď¸ Leave your comfort zone
âď¸ Do something that makes you anxious
âď¸ Get good grades
âď¸ Make new friends
If thereâs something standing in your way or being happy maybe a toxic friend or a bad sleep schedule, you can fix it. Even if you think itâs impossible or youâre not capable. And if you donât have the strength right now to try thatâs completely okay too. Just know that you are capable of improving things that make you unhappy. Things arenât going to stay the same way forever. You are strong and you can accomplish so much more than you think you can.

21 Little Ways to Motivate Yourself
Iâve been lacking a little in the motivation department with the end of the school year drawing closer, so I made a little list of ways to help you stay focused until the end!Â
Play your favorite song as you work through your PSET/essay/application/thing you donât wanna do.
Make yourself a hot cup of tea (or coffee!) in a fun mug.Â
Write your to-do list on a piece of pretty stationary with a pretty pen.
Set a timer and race yourself to finish things faster.
Use your imagination - your English paper doesnât HAVE to be an English paper, it can be a Hogwartâs assignment. Sounds silly, but it works for me!
Find a new place to study. Cute coffee shop? Balcony with a nice view? New section of the library? Heck, just doing your HW on the floor instead of your desk can be more engaging.Â
Dress up. You donât even have to go anywhere, sometimes putting on proper clothing can switch your mindset.Â
Conversely, you can find your comfiest PJs and fluffy socks and wear those.Â
Put your hair up so itâs not in the way. When Iâm focusing, my hair has to be in a ponytail so Iâm not fiddling with it.Â
Get a snack, preferably something healthy(ish). Drink some H2O.
Write motivational quotes on sticky notes and stick them around your study space. Or write them on your hand so you see it often.Â
At the very least, put your books where you can see them. Out of sight, out of mind!Â
Same goes for anything you need to get done (laundry, forms youâre supposed to fill out, anything goes!)
Go for a walk around the block and spend some time in fresh air. Jog, if youâre feeling up for it.Â
Stretch out your muscles, roll out your shoulders, touch your toes. Youâll feel better if youâre not all tight and sore.Â
Put on some lipstick. For some reason, red lipstick always makes me feel like a boss (even if Iâm chilling in a hoodie and sweatpants).Â
Write out the reasons you started in the first place. Put that list somewhere you can see it [see #12].Â
Take a power nap. I just get a fluffy blanket and sleep right on my desk.Â
Talk to someone supportive. Parents? Best friend? Roommate? Your cat/dog/parakeet/goldfish?Â
Stand in front of the mirror and power pose. Yes, youâll feel ridiculous. But it works.Â
Smile!Â

Inmates in three NY prisons can no longer receive donated books in the mail from family and community groups. They have to buy books from state-approved vendors with a limited selection.
Instead of inmates being able to receive donated books in the mail from family members and community groups, inmates at three New York prisons now have to purchase books selected by six, state-approved vendors. And the selection is limited. And expensive, activists say.
Novels cost $11.25 from one vendor.
A book about chess costs $29.95 from another.
And about a quarter of the titles are coloring books.
According to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the directive is in an effort to restrict contraband from entering the prison âthrough a more controlled inmate package program.â
Gov. Andrew Cuomoâs office has made the point that inmates still have access to prison libraries, but some say itâs not enough. âThe problem with prison libraries is that [the prisons] control who has access to them,â said Amy Peterson with NYC Books Through Bars. âSo people who are in solitary confinement donât have access to prison libraries.â
Petersonâs group has been mailing books to prisoners all over the country for nearly two decades, with a focus on New York. âWe get letters from people saying they had to borrow a stamp in order to write to us. So if these people canât even afford postage, we donât know how theyâre going to be able to afford buying books from a vendor,â she said.

From the NY Daily News:
Over the past several days, inmate advocates pointed out that the vendors combined offered only five romance novels, 14 religious texts, 24 drawing or coloring books, 21 puzzle books, 11 how-to books, one dictionary, and one thesaurus.
âNo books that help people learn to overcome addictions or learn how to improve as parents. No Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Maya Angelou, or other literature that helps people connect with what it means to be human. No texts that help provide skills essential to finding and maintaining work after release from prison. No books about health, about history, about almost anything inside or outside the prison walls,â advocacy group Books Behind Bars complained in a letter to the governor.
Actions you can take that Iâve found so far:
Sign this petition from the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee
Send postcards to Gov. Cuomo and Acting Prison Commissioner Annucci
Leave a message about it at Gov. Cuomoâs office (you can follow the script from the postcard link):Â 518-474-8390
If youâre in NY, contact your State Senator and State Assembly Member
Donate to NYC Books Through Bars
Tell your friends and family to do the same!
