Would it perhaps be possible that the majority of, if not all of the fourth wall breaks from Anne are in direct connection with her diary entries? I know it’s been considered that the reason behind the fourth wall breaks is because we are supposed to be in connection to her life, like spectators, but what if the fourth wall breaks are happening during a literal moment that she wrote about in the diary? I.e. arguing with Marian, saying shabby little Shibden, talking about making Ann her wife, saying that she unhinges her, etc.

This could have totally been theorized already and I’ve just missed the post! If so, I apologize! But, if not, just throwing that out there!

Your theory is correct. Even the “Spice of Matrimony” line comes from the diary. There’s a companion book to the series w/ some of her entries in it, and I’ve recognized those lines as points where she’s broken the 4th wall in the show. So yes, the 4th wall breaks are their way of framing her diary entries as if she’s talking to an audience.
