In the daylight, I become weightless I get more faithful every fist I make Men die, but the devil is ageless The Lord, he lifts me every breath I take
This is the list of every song on my Everley Brothers playlist, with an explanation for each (spoilers ahead):
{I have sort of structured it in regards to the plot of elsewhere, which broke my brain, so it sorta works but you don't need to think of it like that.}
Crusades (by Geese): THE Everley Brothers song of all time. I'm sorry but 'I get more faithful every fist I make' is HER, what else do I need to say???? But yeah complete faith through violence and deception and yet seeing beauty in it all, yeah very everley.
My Sweet Lord (by George Harrison): This is sort of self explanatory BUT I think there is this specific desperate vibe in this song which matches how Everley comes across early on in the series which I think is cool.
Worship You (by Vampire Weekend): I really wanted a song which gave the travelling and preaching set up the gang had early in the season and then I found this song and was like YES DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY. So yeah but also there is a funky double meaning to this because I find it fascinating how much Everley claims to love Pedante and how he is the reason for everything she does but really it's about her personal need for approval, so who are they worshipping in the song??? Pedante??? Or Everley herself?????
Stick With Me Baby (by The Everly Brothers): Yeah so its The Everly Brothers asking someone to stick with them even though everyone else is telling them not to...kinda like what she does with everyone who claims to follow Pedante with her....
Killer Queen (by Queen): She is a serial killer and I love her for it ❤️
You May Be Right (by Billy Joel): I literally love this song for Everley. Its got that right/wrong theme to it, its about being a littel crazy (which let's face it our girl is) AND there's this super cool bit where he sings 'remember how I found you there/ Alone in your electric chair' and its like YESSS that's so what she does!! She preys on those in a bad situation AND in a way they do go along with it because it is a 'lunatic'they are looking for. Also this whole 'don't try and save me' and refusal to change vibe is very Everley.
Liar (by Queen): I'm not even kidding Queen have so many good songs for Everley. It's so good. Like it has all her guilt surrounding her past, it has the fact that no one believes in her and her God, its the fact that her own God is lying to her. Also! I put it here because also being a liar??? That's kinda Valentine coded and he dies early on!! So, yeah, idk this could probs be later in the playlist but there is a lot of Queen and I was trying (and failing) to seperate them.
I Am Right (by Amie Moore): This is just the song that everley has playing in her head all the time to try and rationalise her actions and i think she is valid for that....well, maybe not...Also 'i won't apologise, I can't apologies' is literally her
Horseradish (by Small Fools): 'I came along/Started off mad/ Intensified with age/Day after day/We pray and we pray/And never turn the page' NEED I SAY MORE??? It's so her tho, so much it, I love this song
I'm Number One (by the Muppets i guess???): Sorry for the whiplash but I'm a big muppet fan and whenever thet did the whole 'number one, number two' thing this is all I could think of so yeah
My Lady of Mercy (by The Last Dinner Party): Okay but this is Everley finding her ideal follower in Quarrel and you absolutely cannot convince me otherwise. She loves his obedience and how committed he is and wants to be his 'lady of mercy'. Making this playlist made me even more fascinated in their relationship, I am unwell!!
The Prophet's Song (by Queen): I don't think I really need to say anything about this one. It is what it says on the tin. It is kinda eery tho which I think suits Everley's vibe since she keeps killing people
Second Child, Restless Child (by The Oh Helllos): everley backstory!!!! 'And Heaven knows how hard I tried/ But the devil whispered lies I believed'!!!!!! Also it ends with running away which omg she did that!!!!
Sudden Storm (by Ezra Furman): Any excuse for Ezra Furman but also the storm in Everley's backstory, the religious imagery, the general stream of consciousness style really gives Everley backstory to me idk. Also there is this idea of getting overwhelmed by a deity and how you feel unimportant idk its fascinating
Sister (by Angel Olsen): This is Everley and Righteous. Just saying. 'Show me the future/tell me you'll be there' Miopia is that you??? This is Righteous being the ideal Everley and how she can't handel that but they're both flawed yada yada
The Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!) (by The Decemberists): Everley and her dad...yeah...
Televangelist (by Julian Baker): Everley Brothers angst!!!!
Anchoress (by Small Fools): Giving yourselves over to a higher power and just a banging song. 'I was born/ a lit spark/ a testement' just gives her idk. 'christen the hopeless believer'....
Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven (by Ezra Furman): HER!! ITS HER!!!!!! I am taking no notes
In The Lap of the Gods (by Queen): Queen really just wrote songs about trusting Gods and maybe that not being such a great idea and i thank them for it.
Sinner (by the Last Dinner Party): I have no justification for this except I could listen to this song on repeat and also like Shadows-Brother angst??? sorta?????
I Am Right (by Carly Blackman): Very sinister sounding and the title speaks for itself
Allies or Enemies (by The Crane Wives): Her (justified) paranoia surrounding whether her fellow followers are as true to the cause as they say.
Love Hurts (by The Everly Brothers): Yeah so I was thinking about her being betrayed by almost everyone she ever trusted....
The Winner Takes it All (by ABBA): Dramatic final battle song! Literally feels like the only song for fight scenes like this, when you end up fighting people you love and, really, there can be one winner. Also all the 'being in your arms' bit is soooo her relationship with Pedante and his betrayel of her. 'Gods may role their dice' yada yada
Girls Against God (by Florence + The Machine): She's fighting her god!!! She's fighting her God and she's sad about it!!!!!
Seven Seas of Rye (by Queen): SHE IS GOD NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Independent Together (by Steven Universe??): She's God now part 2 but Quarrel is coming with her!!!
I Was Wrong (by The Oh Hellos): Okay so this is like a theoretical Everley redemption arc song because like....it's so her. It's actually insane to me. I might make another post about this but like 'I was born at the hands of the potter' (how her entire journey has been shaped by powers she didn't understand), 'I was torn between my God and my father' (the conflict with her father and her own views on religion), 'I'm so, so sorry' (how all she wants is forgiveness but she never apologises) + 'I knew you would never forgive me' (how unlikely a good redemption arc is for her now...). It's actually insane. Maybe one day she'll admit she was wrong....we'll see.
Thanks for bearing with that insanity! If anyone has suggestions for songs I could add or just thoughts do comment/reblog/whatever because I have been ill over this playlist hahahah
