Why I Will Miss MTVâs Faking It
Last Friday when I heard the news that MTVâs Faking It had been canceled, I went through so many different emotions trying to process it. As a fan, and a big Karmy shipper, I was disappointed and hurt that the only show on television I actually watch would be airing its final episode without having a complete story line, and leaving many things unfinished. The last few weeks I have turned into a really big critic of the show, but this isnât about my personal feelings. Itâs about what we will lose in losing this particular television show.
I live and work in the deep south of the southern United States, specifically areas in Alabama and Mississippi. They are small, very rural communities and in spite of being small, isolated, and deeply rooted in conservative Christian values, Faking It has somehow managed to find its way in. I know that may seem insignificant to some, but let me try and put this into perspective. In many areas of the deep south, there really is no such thing as tolerance, love, and acceptance for those that are either a part of the LGBT community or supporters of it. Truth be told it really doesnât matter what your orientation is, or your gender identity, if its even suspected that you fall into the LGBT community or you support it, you can and will be alienated and chastised for it. Itâs more than hushed whispers or people just not talking to you or accepting you. Itâs putting a target on your back for discrimination, bullying, and physical assault. Need an example of the mindset down here? Over the weekend I heard an educator, yes a high school teacher, comment, âIf I find a transgendered in the bathroom with my granddaughter, Iâll kill it!â
This type of rhetoric is what is heard on a daily basis here and this is what makes Faking It so important. It shows the small group of teenagers and young adults in these areas that watch the show, many times in secret, that they are not alone. That other teenagers and young adults struggle with the same issues that they themselves may be struggling with. But most important, Faking It serves as a reminder to those of us here that there is a much larger world out there where you can and will be loved and accepted regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity, even if you have spent your entire life hearing that you are not worthy of such love and acceptance.
