Top Gun AU means callsigns so here’s my take on what Oscar and Lando’s could be and how they got them, i hope this does them justice🫡

Oscar is Drift/Drifter, most people assume it’s due to having lost a bet in the academy and stealing his base sergeants car, which he then proceeded to drift race. This is an exaggerated event, so much so that it is mostly fabricated. He is Drift because in the academy, he was always very good at paying attention... except anytime a certain lieutenant was hovering around, his attention would, well, drift.

(it got so bad at one point that Logan threatened to start calling him ‘heart-eyes’ where everyone else could hear him, thankfully for Oscar, he got stuck with drift before Logan could follow through)

For Lando i’m gonna go with Halo, which was bestowed upon him by an extremely hungover WSO in training days who saw him standing in front of a round porthole on a ship with the sun rising behind and asked him if he was an angel in front of his entire squad. This is supplemented by the fact that he is very fond of the ‘sun position’, which is a technique that works to blind the weapons systems of whoever’s flying behind by flying directly into the sun, at the small risk of also blinding yourself in the process.
