Hell Yeah, Nausicaa!

This blog is dedicated to one of the most underappreciated Ghibli films with some Studio Ghibli news mixed in! Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (Kaze no tani no Naushika, 1984) was produced before Studio Ghibli was initially established. A young warrior princess Nausicaa, tries to find peace between warring humans and giant insects named Ohmu who dominate the planet. The humans want to destroy the Ohmu, and the Ohmu want to protect the earth by thriving in poisonous forests. Amidst the chaos, a lone legend of a blue-clad flying warrior begins.... when are we gonna talk about nausicaä being afraid of her mother not recognizing her vs. kushana having a mother who doesn't recognize her. nausicaä's mother having eleven children and getting to the eleventh one so drained that she couldn't love nausicaä vs. kushana's mother having only one child and loving her enough to sacrifice herself for her. nausicaä growing up surrounded by kindness despite having a mother who didn't love her vs. kushana growing up surrounded by hostility despite having a mother who loved her. nausicaä's mother's first ten children absorbing the poison in her place vs. kushana's mother drinking poison in her place. nausicaä thinking that her mother's face was that of a stranger vs. kushana's face being that of a stranger to her mother. and all the possibly other 47 nausicaä/kushana parallels contained in this scene. their issues are somehow on the opposite ends of the spectrum, but still so similar. "there are some wounds that can never heal".
