a beginnerâs guide to college
Dear @hersweetwonderland: Merry Christmas!! :) Thatâs right, I am your secret santa!!Â
Your wishlist said College AU, and I decided to go with UPLB, because thatâs really the only college Iâm that familiar with. I hope you like it!!Â
âAlright, class dismissed.â
Joven Hernando found himself biting his tongue in embarrassment as he almost bid goodbye to the professor.
Right. College. Not high school.
He slung his backpack over his shoulder, surprising himself yet again as he realized it was lighter than usual.
Well, of course it was. The only thing in there was a pack of index cards, a binder full of still blank Cattleya fillers, and a bottle of cold water he had bought at the nearby Mini Stop.
His phone displayed the time: 4:30. He had been told that his dormmates wouldnât be home till 6, and there was no way he was spending an hour and a half alone in a dorm, especially after finding out about all the horror stories the campus had in store. But where would he -Â
âAhh!â Joven screamed, tripping backwards and falling to the ground with a âthumpâ. His glasses fell off in the process, and suddenly all he could see was nothing but blurry figures. He could, however, hear one soft snicker as he got on all fours to search for his glasses.
âEd, wala ka talagang kwenta.â a soft voice chided, and Joven found two strong hands helping him up. Before he could say thank you, he found his glasses on his face once again.
âOkay ka lang ba?â an older man asked him, eyes searching his face as he checked if Joven had sustained any injuries. The young boy nodded and gave a quick smile, still too embarrassed to talk after making a fool out of himself.
It was hard not to stay embarrassed when there was someone still laughing at him.
The person who had helped him up followed his gaze, and as soon as he laid eyes on his still laughing companion, he cleared his throat and gave the man a glare. The latter finally stopped laughing, looking sheepish as he apologized to Joven.
At that, Edâs eyes widened as he gripped the other man by the shoulders, pleading, ââWag naman ganyan, Paco! Di na ako papakainin nun!â
Isabel. Jovenâs eyes lit up with recognition as he remembered the name. she was his new landlady, who had been kind enough to wish him good luck and tell him how to get to and fro the big campus. She reminded Joven of his own mother.
But how did these people know her?
As if reading Jovenâs mind, Ed grinned and slung his arm over the frehsmanâs shoulder.
âUmâŠâ Joven found himself saying, still trying to take in everything that Ed had said.
ââYan, tinakot mo tuloy. Ang bilis mo kasi magsalita! Ano bang nakain mo?â Paco asked.
Paco shook his head, then turning to Joven, and asked in a softer tone, âMay sunod ka pa bang klase?â
âWala na po.â Joven answered, finding it easier to talk to Paco than to Ed.
âFavoritism! Bakit siya lang ang sinagot mo? Hindi lang dahil matataba ang pisngi nitong si Paco, mas reliable na agad siya!â Ed pouted, crossing his arms as he sat onto a nearby bench. Joven took one small step backwards.Â
DidâŠEd just read his mind?
âMagsama na nga muna kayo ni Goyong, Ed, ang hyper mo masyado ngayon.â Paco groaned, and Joven found himself internally agreeing with him.
Ed did seem kind enough, but his hyper personality was hard to take in, especially when Joven was intimidated enough by the fact he was a college student. Pacoâs kind, soft tone and attitude was what joven found himself needing at the moment.
âAsan ba yung supot na yun?â
Paco shrugged. âRinig ko nasa Fertility Tree daw siya, baka hinihintay ka lang.â he said, winking afterwards.
âSa harapan talaga ng bata, Paco? Grabe ka.â Ed said, shaking his head in mock sadness, but Joven and Paco both saw the grin on his face. âO, una na ako.â
âSo, anong alam mo tungkol sa UPLB?â Paco asked, turning to Joven as soon as Ed had gone, as if to start a conversation and to forget the recent one.
Hyper lang siguro ngayon.â Paco said, and although he had said a lot, Joven found himself understanding what he said perfectly.
âMahirap ba po dito?â Joven asked, shifting his backpack. If what Paco said about other people pranking freshmen and all the other stories he had heard about terror professors were true, maybe Joven had bitten of more than he could chew with his college choice.
Bakit, nahirapan ka ba sa first day mo?âÂ
âHindi naman. Naninibago lang siguro.â Joven muttered, and he felt Pacoâs hand clap him on the shoulder.
Joven looked down to the ground, and Paco frowned as he looked at the confusion clearly written on the boyâs face. âMay itatanong ka ba?â
âAno yung Fertility Tree?â
Jovenâs frown only grew deeper as pacoâs cheeks grew a deep red as the young man blushed. âHindi ko ba dapat yun itanong?â he asked, alarmed.
âHindi naman.â Paco said, trying to compose himself. âum, yung fertility treeâŠyun yung isang malaking puno malapit sa Carillon Tower.â
âPati maraming naglalandian dun. Daming nagsesex. Kaya nga fertility tree, di ba?â
Joven turned around to find a man grinning at him, his eyes as mischievous as Edâs seemed to be. From behind Joven, Paco groaned, putting a hand to his face. âJusko po, JosĂ© .â
âBakit? Totoo naman eh.â JosĂ© cried, feigning innocence. âDapat wala tayong sikreto dito sa ating isda.â
âIsda?â Joven asked, not noticing the panicked look Paco had given him.
âIsda. Fishie. Freshie.â JosĂ© grinned, and Joven fought the urge to groan. Paco, however, didnât keep his annoyance secret.
âAno kayang ginagawa nila dun?â JosĂ© grinned, and Joven thought Paco looked like he was close to punching him.
JosĂ© Bernal, at your service.â JosĂ© grinned, shaking Jovenâs hand energetically.
âHeneral?â Joven asked Paco as soon as Jose had left.
They rode a jeep in silence, Paco frantically texting and letting out a frustrated sigh once in a while as Joven watched in silence, too shy to ask what he was doing. Once they had left the jeep, however, Paco apologized as he stuffed his phone in his pocket.
Sure enough, as they opened the door, a man in his midthirties with an impressive mustache greeted them. He first gave Paco a quick nod, and then continued to look Joven up and down, giving the freshman the fright of his life.
âTonio. Tinatakot mo yung bata.â Isabelâs soft voice chided from what seemed to be the kitchen.
âOpo.â Paco said, smiling softly at Joven. The latter returned the smile gratefully.
Pababain mo na sila Manuel.â Tonio said, grabbing his car keys on his way out.
Paco nodded, and he and Joven made their way up. They threw their stuff on their beds, quickly changing before Paco knocked on the next door. âManuel, kakain na!â he called.
âNonong, ikaw din. Baba na tayo.â he said, knocking on the opposite door.
The two doors opened at the same time, revealing two sleepy young men.Â
âSino âto?â Manuel asked at first, gesturing to Joven.
âGood Evening.â Nonong greeted as he made his way down.
âNakilala mo na pala kapatid ko?â Manuel asked, yawning as he followed Nonong down.
âAko ba pinaguusapan mo, Kuya?â a cheeky voice called from the doorway, and Joven found himself amongst the company of Ed and JosĂ© once again, along with another young man.
âGoyong Del Pilar.â he introduced himself to Joven before talking once again to Ed. The two seemed like really good friendsâŠor were they more than friends? Joven wasnât so sure.Â
âKakain ba kayo o ako na ang uubos nito?â Isabel suddenly called, startling them all. She smirked as she watched the boys sit into their chairs eagerly, almost immediately digging into their food.
âAng sarap po talaga ng luto niyo, Tita Isabel!â Ed commented through a mouthful of rice.
âAyusin mo ang pagnguya mo, Ed.â was all Isabel had to say, and Joven couldnât help but laugh along with the others as they watched Ed slow his chewing to a dramatic pace.
Amidst the noise of Goyong jokingly spoon feeding Ed, Nonong and JosĂ© talking about somethingâŠrather inappropriate, Paco and Manuel talking about a new professor, and Tonio and Isabel talking about someone named Aguinaldo and Mabini, Joven heard the soft ring of his phone and stopped midchew to read the text his mother had sent him.
âAnak, okay lang ba first day mo?â
Joven grinned as he took another look up at his second family, and texted back, without hesitation, âSobrang okay, Ma, âwag po kayo magaalala. Love you po.âÂ
