Thank you to Rachel Reid Jacob Tierney, HudCon, and The Cottage for this dose of hope.
'Heated Rivalry' has catapulted its stars to a wild level of fame. But with that comes a fanbase that is grossly attacking one star.
This article needed to be written, especially as we await François' podcast episode with Evan Ross Katz, which some of us believe has been delayed due to additional editing and/or better timing for the release of the interview.
Here are the highlights:
Fledgling fandoms like Heated Rivalry‘s go through growing pains, especially when the show blows up the way that it did. However, there does not seem to be any change on the horizon for the toxic subsection of this fandom, because they have set their sights not just on critics, but on the very actors involved in the show.
The problem with the Heated Rivalry fandom, though, is that some of them simply take it too far. Arnaud is the only openly queer actor (he’s bisexual, and has been open about having a male partner). To these fans, that makes him a threat to their ship. And as it historically goes, they create smear campaigns and lies to turn others against them. Suddenly, Arnaud is hated. He is a groomer (never mind that Storrie is an adult).
Speculating is fine when it’s harmless. RPF is fine when it’s harmless. If you want to joke around and say Oh, it looks like they’re on a date! to a paparazzi photo, again–fine, if it’s harmless. But what is happening with some members of the Heated Rivalry fandom has gone much further than that.

You ever hear that old chestnut about how most people neglect the part of the story of Icarus where he also had to avoid flying too low, lest the spray of the sea soak his feathers and cause him to fall and drown? You ever think about how different the world would be if Icarus died that way instead? If the idiom was to Fly To Close To The Sea? A warning against playing it far too safe, about not stretching your wings and soaring properly? You ever think about how Icarus died because he was happy?
Currently re-reading Cut & Run after an eternity and I just got to the part where Ty said he's 34 years old and—
I first read this when I was like 20 in college and now we're the same age this is crazy
(also I completely thought Ty was 37 on the first book, the reread is warranted I guess)

The fact that they never look at each other but convey their feelings for each other is why Percy Jackson’s casting is god tier (pun intended)

"I want him to know who he is before your family tries to tell him who they want him to be" goes so hard actually because you realize that Annabeth never had that choice. She got to camp at 7. She never got to know who she was without the pressure of being a demigod.
