My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
thinking more about ex-catholic!trinity
i think her confirmation saint would have been St. Rita of Cascia. patron saint of lost causes. patron saint of illness and wounds. patron saint of abuse. i think trinity would think of how st. rita let herself fall into serving God after losing her family and see a mirror to her pursuit of medicine after losing her best friend. i think she would think of how st. rita initially faced backlash when joining the convent because she wasn't a virgin and would feel a sort of kinship, this shunning because your past experiences aren't "right."
i think ex-catholic trinity santos hates how she carries the faith in her name. i think she despises that she's forced to carry the legacy of the God who couldn't save her and the saints who didn't intercede for her. i think ex-catholic trinity santos rejected every ounce of the faith that failed her. escaped with gritted teeth and broken sobs and bloodied knuckles but goddammit she escaped.
i think about her going through old boxes and stumbling across her childhood rosary. i think maybe dennis comes home and finds her gripping it so hard he thinks it might shatter and then his eyes catch on hers and oh. he's never seen her like this before. angry with a rage so deep it felt physical. maybe he lowers himself to the ground next her. quietly. gently. not saying anything, just giving her his presence.
"they always said that praying this stupid string of beads was like talking to a mother. that mary was there for us. watching over us. but what kind of mother lets her children die?" it's barely more than a whisper, but in the silence of their shared apartment dennis hears and he listens. "i prayed so much. that she would be okay. that God would save her. but He never did. and maybe--" her voice was cracking and dennis was pulling her into a hug before he knew it.
dennis held her close, didn't speak, let her take up all the space she needed as she cried into his chest. "maybe i could've saved her. if i'd known God didn't save shit."
because that was the core of it really, right? that's why she was a doctor. why she tried so hard to stop abuse in its tracks. because she couldn't save her friend. her friend was the lost cause that would haunt her forever. not lost as in discarded, but lost as in snatched away. as in stolen. maybe if she mended enough wounds and cured enough illness she would have atoned for losing that cause, for losing her friend. maybe medicine was simply her penance.
and maybe dennis was the first man she ever truly trusted to take her confession. because he listened. he listens.
whenever trinity cooks dinner, she always takes a bite out of dennis’s food before giving him his plate. the first time he receives a grilled cheese with a suspicious chunk missing resembling that of a human mouth, he awkwardly laughs and says, “umm… i think this might be your plate…” and she just replies, “nah, that’s yours. didn’t want you to think it was poisoned.”
my actual vampire hot take is that if you're going to be a 'vegetarian' vampire (a vampire that only drinks the blood of animals) you MUST have hunter education. i'm so sick of people being like oh well predator animals are mean and scary because they kill cute 'harmless' animals like NO they're crucial for the environment and if you're going to hunt animals for blood you still need to stick to regular people hunting guidelines and only hunt things that are in season and abide by your areas bag limits
vampire that did a detailed study about whether vampires can get prion diseases and concluded they can't and preferentially hunts animals with chronic wasting disease. and then incinerates the corpses.
vampire who is a woke predation abolitionist and so exclusively hunts predators, leaving primarily herbivorous and scavenging animals alone
"For miles around the foul creature's lair is nothing but barren wastes"
"because of The Curse?"
"Because of the deer and rabbits, fucking thing ate all the wolves"
Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Now’s your chance to read it around the time it’s based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I used to set this one for second year undergraduate creative writing seminars on writing science fiction on a double bill with Octavia E. Butler's "Bloodchild" and no-one here gets out alive.
!!!! Today is the only chance we’ll ever have to listen to this absolute banger of apocalyptic fiction on the very day the story is set 😲✨
Nemoy’s voice is PERFECT in this!
(A content warning if you do listen - the dog dies, though it’s not super graphic)
I paused the robot vacuum so I could listen to this 1950’s story predicting the robot vacuum.
look, i work at a morgue, i get to see every day how withered and small bodies can get when someone was sick. it’s awful. do you know how bone-thin a leg can get. or how a stomach really looks beneath the ribs when it’s wasted away. the way people’s eyes and cheeks press in to their skull like they’re clinging on for dear life. they died like that, and you want to try and sell me a lie, a pill, a miracle cure that’ll make me live in that state? that’ll make my friends look like that, my family, the people i love? to see corpses in them?
this job makes me appreciate all the more bodies lived in and well-loved. please eat that second serving. please give yourself treats as much as you want. life is not long enough to suffer through it. you’ll be plenty skinny when you’re dead.
I think at bare minimum all medical professionals need to make sure they are treating patients with more kindness and respect than grifters. if you go to a doctor and they treat you like shit, humiliate you, and send you home without any information on your body or access to treatment, then health-grifters' offers will start to feel more tempting by simply giving the most basic performance of taking you seriously and caring about your well-being. grifters should be condemned for manipulating and exploiting sick people, and doctors also play a role in whether grifts thrive or are successfully identified and rejected. genuine baseline human respect, and beginning a relationship with a patient by earning (rather than demanding) trust, goes a long way.
Some people in asylums in the 50s were crazy. Some of them were psychotic, screaming at things nobody else could see. Some of them were aggressive, kicking and punching and biting without provocation. Some of them were a danger to themselves. Hell, some of them were a danger to others. And they were people. They were human beings. And all human beings deserve human rights, something those people, by law, didn't have.
Some people in mental hospitals now are crazy. Some of us are psychotic. Some of us are aggressive. Some of us are a danger to ourselves. Some of us are a danger to others. And we are still humans, who deserve human rights, which we legally do not have.
Some of us, a few of the crazy people you talk about, are exactly what you say we are. Psychotic, aggressive, a danger to ourselves and others. That doesnt change the fact that we are human. That doesnt change the fact that every individual human that exists, has ever existed, and will ever exist deserves human rights. That doesnt change the fact that we don't have those human rights in every situation. "Few of us are aggressive," while true as a statement, fails to acknowledge and insist that those of us who are still deserve to be treated with the same dignity and respect as any other person.

How on earth would they be able to tell that a bear is trans. I’m not saying they can’t be but how would they communicate that.
